Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, San Diego, California, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2030 UN Agenda aims to eliminate STIs as a public health threat, but data on STI prevalence, especially among men in middle and low-income countries, is insufficient.
  • The study analyzed survey data from military personnel across several African countries (Cameroon, Chad, DRC, etc.) between 2013-2018 to estimate active syphilis prevalence and its associations with demographic factors.
  • Results showed low syphilis prevalence (<1%) in most countries, with notably higher rates in Chad (6.2%) and DRC (15.5%), highlighting a critical need for better epidemiological surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa.

The ecological importance of great apes is widely recognised, yet few studies have highlighted the role of protecting great apes' habitats in mitigating climate change, particularly through carbon sequestration. This study used GIS tools to extract data from various sources, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature database, to examine carbon quantity and great ape abundance in African great ape habitats. Subsequently, we employed a generalised linear model to assess the relationship between locally measured great ape populations abundance and carbon storage across areas with different levels of protection.

This is the first description of the complete genome sequence of a newly characterized monopartite begomovirus isolated from an asymptomatic uncultivated plant, Melochia tomentosa, collected in Burkina Faso. The sequence was obtained through rolling-circle amplification, cloning, and Sanger sequencing. The provisional species name "Begomovirus melochiae" and common virus name "melochia associated virus" (MeAV) are proposed.

Metabolic mechanisms conferring pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors are jeopardizing the effectiveness of insecticide-based interventions, and identification of their markers is a key requirement for robust resistance management. Here, using a field-lab-field approach, we demonstrated that a single mutation G454A in the P450 CYP9K1 is driving pyrethroid resistance in the major malaria vector Anopheles funestus in East and Central Africa. Drastic reduction in CYP9K1 diversity was observed in Ugandan samples collected in 2014, with the selection of a predominant haplotype (G454A mutation at 90%), which was completely absent in the other African regions.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assessed the effectiveness of six fungal isolates from Cameroon, specifically Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana, in controlling the banana aphid, a key vector of the banana bunchy top virus (BBTV).
  • - Four of the fungal isolates demonstrated high pathogenicity, resulting in over 75% mortality of the aphids across different populations, while also significantly reducing aphid reproduction.
  • - The findings advocate for the use of these fungal biopesticides as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy to combat banana aphids and lower BBTV transmission in agricultural settings.

Article Synopsis
  • The eradication efforts for Dracunculus medinensis, which causes Guinea worm disease, began at the CDC in 1980 and gained momentum after the World Health Assembly aimed for elimination in 1986 due to millions of cases worldwide.
  • The Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP), led by The Carter Center and supported by various organizations, works to assist affected countries in reducing cases, but faces challenges from new infections in animals and ongoing civil unrest.
  • As of mid-2024, despite 14 human cases and hundreds of animal infections reported recently, Guinea worm disease remains endemic in five countries, although there is still hope for achieving zero cases in the near future.

Electronic address:

The marine waters off the coast of northwest Africa are known for being highly productive upwelling regions in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. The present study evaluated the combined effects of climate change and sustainable fishing levels on the long-term sustainability of European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), a target pelagic species found along the West African coastal waters. The present study used survey biomass time series from survey vessels and species catch time series from commercial fisheries operating in the region.

Objectives: Each year, 5.3 million children under 5 years of age die in low-resource settings, often due to delayed recognition of disease severity, inadequate treatment, or a lack of supplies. We describe the use of a comprehensive digital facility-readiness survey tool, recently developed by the Pediatric Sepsis Data CoLaboratory, which aims to identify target areas for quality improvement related to pediatric emergency and critical care.

Unlabelled: Gastric and duodenal ulcers are increasingly becoming global health burdens. The side effects of conventional treatments such as non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antibiotics, and cytoprotective agents have necessitated the search for new medications. Plants are a rich source of active metabolites and herbal medicines have been used in the treatment of ulcers and cancers.

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for 90 % of deaths in Africa. However, limited data on exposure to air pollution is available, and studies are rare, particularly in French-speaking Africa. This study aims to investigate the impact of air pollution on mortality in 12 French-speaking African countries (Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Tunisia).

Malaria is a significant public health challenge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), with a high prevalence and mortality rate, particularly among children under five years old. This study examines the impact of malaria in eastern DR Congo, where armed conflict and humanitarian crises have resulted in overcrowded refugee and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, exacerbating malaria transmission. Malnutrition, limited access to healthcare, and poor living conditions makes children under the age of five particularly vulnerable.

Objectives: To monitor the spread of invasive meningococcal disease due to group C of the clonal complex 10217 isolates beyond the sub-Saharan African meningitis belt.

Methods: Cases were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction in blood or cerebrospinal fluid samples and further characterized by multi-locus sequence typing that defined sequence type and clonal complexes. Sequencing of gene (encoding the penicillin-binding protein 2) was also used to predict susceptibility to β-lactams.
