Direct formate fuel cells (DFFCs) receive increasing attention as promising technologies for the future energy mix and environmental sustainability, as formate can be made from carbon dioxide utilization and is carbon neutral. Herein, heterostructured platinum-palladium alloy and oxides nanowires (PtPd-ox NWs) with abundant defect sites are synthesized through a facile self-template method and demonstrated high activity toward formate electrooxidation reaction (FOR). The electronic tuning arising from the heterojunction between alloy and oxides influence the work function of PtPd-ox NWs.

COVID-19 vaccine apartheid and the failure of global cooperation.

The equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines is one of the most important tests of global cooperation that the world has faced in recent decades. Collectively, global leaders failed that crucible abysmally, creating a 'vaccine apartheid' that divided the world according to income into countries with widespread access and those without. Why, given that leaders were fully aware of the risks and injustice of vaccine inequity, did governments of wealthy countries hoard doses, impede the expansion of vaccine manufacturing and otherwise prevent equitable access to vaccines? We argue that their decisions to act selfishly are best explained by governments' accountability to domestic constituencies, their lack of leadership and commitment to multilateralism and their adoption of short-term perspectives, as well as their unwillingness to curb the influence of profit-oriented global pharmaceutical companies and, to a certain extent, of an additional private actor, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

PARTNER is a prospective, phase II-III, randomized controlled clinical trial that recruited patients with triple-negative breast cancer, who were germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 wild type. Here we report the results of the trial. Patients (n = 559) were randomized on a 1:1 basis to receive neoadjuvant carboplatin-paclitaxel with or without 150 mg olaparib twice daily, on days 3 to 14, of each of four cycles (gap schedule olaparib, research arm) followed by three cycles of anthracycline-based chemotherapy before surgery.

Boosting CO Hydrogenation to Methanol over Monolayer MoS Nanotubes by Creating More Strained Basal Planes.

The controlled creation, selective exposure, and activation of more basal planes while simultaneously minimizing the generation and exposure of edge sites are crucial for accelerating methanol synthesis from CO hydrogenation over MoS catalysts but remain a bottleneck. Here, we report a facile method to fabricate heteronanotube catalysts with single-layer MoS coaxially encapsulating the carbon nanotubes (CNTs@MoS) through host-guest chemistry. Inheriting the long tubular structure of CNTs, the grown MoS nanotubes exhibit significantly more basal planes than bulk MoS crystals.

Interrogation of RNA-protein interaction dynamics in bacterial growth.

Characterising RNA-protein interaction dynamics is fundamental to understand how bacteria respond to their environment. In this study, we have analysed the dynamics of 91% of the Escherichia coli expressed proteome and the RNA-interaction properties of 271 RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) at different growth phases. We find that 68% of RBPs differentially bind RNA across growth phases and characterise 17 previously unannotated proteins as bacterial RBPs including YfiF, a ncRNA-binding protein.

With the foundation pre-laid, research in the new millennium has readily excavated and expanded upon the architectural framework laid out by Otto Warburg's seminal work in a new wave of "westward expansion," ever widening our understanding of cancer metabolism beyond the telescopic vision seen over a century ago. On this path, the unique circuitry of the cancer metabolic program has been elucidated, illuminating mutations of conserved cellular pathways implicated in tumorigenesis. Paramount among these are mutations in tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes, succinate dehydrogenase, and fumarate hydratase, leading to deleterious accumulations in metabolic intermediates, "oncometabolites," the pilots of the disease process.

Infection with SARS-CoV-2 is associated with an increased risk of arterial and venous thrombotic events, but the implications of vaccination for this increased risk are uncertain. With the approval of NHS England, we quantified associations between COVID-19 diagnosis and cardiovascular diseases in different vaccination and variant eras using linked electronic health records for ~40% of the English population. We defined a 'pre-vaccination' cohort (18,210,937 people) in the wild-type/Alpha variant eras (January 2020-June 2021), and 'vaccinated' and 'unvaccinated' cohorts (13,572,399 and 3,161,485 people respectively) in the Delta variant era (June-December 2021).

The development of cancer is an evolutionary process involving the sequential acquisition of genetic alterations that disrupt normal biological processes, enabling tumor cells to rapidly proliferate and eventually invade and metastasize to other tissues. We investigated the genomic evolution of prostate cancer through the application of three separate classification methods, each designed to investigate a different aspect of tumor evolution. Integrating the results revealed the existence of two distinct types of prostate cancer that arise from divergent evolutionary trajectories, designated as the Canonical and Alternative evolutionary disease types.
