Bone mineral density (BMD) levels achieved on osteoporosis treatment are predictive of subsequent fracture risk, and T-score > -2.5 has been proposed as a minimum treatment target for women with osteoporosis. Knowing the likelihood of attaining target T-scores with different medications for different baseline BMD levels can help determine appropriate initial treatment for individual patients.

Tenzing Assisted Delivery of Aspiration (TADA) technique for thrombectomy of medium vessel occlusions using the Freeclimb 54 catheter: multicenter experience.

Background: Medium vessel occlusions (MeVOs) account for 25-40% of acute ischemic stroke. The Tenzing 5 (Route 92 Medical, San Mateo, California, USA) and FreeClimb 54 (Route 92 Medical, San Mateo, California, USA) catheter is a novel delivery-aspiration catheter combination designed to facilitate aspiration thrombectomy (AT) of MeVOs. We report our clinical experience using the Tenzing assisted delivery of aspiration (TADA) technique with FreeClimb 54 for first-line AT of MeVO.

Background: The location of extraocular muscle (EOM) insertions is clinically relevant in ophthalmologic surgery. The spiral of Tillaux has been a reference for normal EOM insertion since the nineteenth century. Research on EOM insertions is limited and has focused on adult cadaveric eyes.

Routine HIV Testing for People Who Inject Drugs Hospitalized With Infective Endocarditis in the United States: A Commentary.

HIV screening is not routinely offered to acutely ill, hospitalized patients. For some patients a hospitalization represents a crucial opportunity to identify undiagnosed HIV infection and interrupt HIV transmission chains. Among people who inject drugs, a hospitalization for infective endocarditis may be one of the only touchpoints they have with a health care provider.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension presenting as bilateral palpebral venous engorgement.

Purpose: To report the case of a woman in her fifties whose presenting symptom of idiopathic intracranial hypertension was engorgement of the eyelid veins.

Observations: Bilateral engorged palpebral veins were visible through the skin. Dilated fundus examination revealed bilateral optic disc edema.

Somatic mutation as an explanation for epigenetic aging.

DNA methylation marks have recently been used to build models known as epigenetic clocks, which predict calendar age. As methylation of cytosine promotes C-to-T mutations, we hypothesized that the methylation changes observed with age should reflect the accrual of somatic mutations, and the two should yield analogous aging estimates. In an analysis of multimodal data from 9,331 human individuals, we found that CpG mutations indeed coincide with changes in methylation, not only at the mutated site but with pervasive remodeling of the methylome out to ±10 kilobases.

Sleep macro-architecture and dementia risk in adults: Meta-analysis of 5 cohorts from the Sleep and Dementia Consortium.

Study Objectives: Poor sleep may play a role in the risk of dementia. However, few studies have investigated the association between polysomnography (PSG)-derived sleep architecture and dementia incidence. We examined the relationship between sleep macro-architecture and dementia incidence across five US-based cohort studies from the Sleep and Dementia Consortium (SDC).

RELT Is Upregulated in Breast Cancer and Induces Death in Breast Cancer Cells.

Background: Receptor Expressed in Lymphoid Tissues (RELT) is a TNFRSF member that has two paralogs, RELL1 and RELL2; the three proteins are collectively referred to as RELT family members (RELTfms).

Methods: We sought to evaluate RELT expression in cancerous cells by using real-time PCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The mechanism of RELT-induced cell death was assessed by western blotting, flow cytometry, luciferase assays, and morphology staining.

The geroscience hypothesis proposes that underlying biological processes, such as the accumulation of senescent cells, have deleterious effects on multiple tissues and increase the risk of many chronic conditions with aging. Senescent cells produce heterogenous biomarkers, also called senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Circulating concentrations of senescence biomarkers may reflect an underlying burden of senescent cells in various tissues.
