The carers of persons with cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer's have migrated to online platforms to seek help, yet studies on the use of online social support within the context of caregiving are underdeveloped. Guided by the social support theory, we examined the association of online and offline social support with depression and anxiety in the United States. Using a subsample from the 2017 and 2018 Health Information National Trends Survey ( = 264), we conducted ordered logistic regression to test mediation and moderation effects, which revealed that only offline, not online social support had a direct association with carers' mental health.

The Iron Content of Human Serum Albumin Modulates the Susceptibility of to Cefiderocol.

Biomedicines

February 2023

Center for Applied Biotechnology Studies, Department of Biological Science, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, California State University Fullerton, Fullerton, CA 92831, USA.

The mortality rates of patients infected with who were treated with cefiderocol (CFDC) were not as favorable as those receiving the best available treatment for pulmonary and bloodstream infections. Previous studies showed that the presence of human serum albumin (HSA) or HSA-containing fluids, such as human serum (HS) or human pleural fluid (HPF), in the growth medium is correlated with a decrease in the expression of genes associated with high-affinity siderophore-mediated iron uptake systems. These observations may explain the complexities of the observed clinical performance of CFDC in pulmonary and bloodstream infections, because ferric siderophore transporters enhance the penetration of CFDC into the bacterial cell.

Using a simplified model for a non-Brownian suspension, we numerically study the response of athermal, overdamped, frictionless disks in two dimensions to isotropic and uniaxial compression, as well as to pure and simple shearing, all at finite constant strain rates ε[over ̇]. We show that isotropic and uniaxial compression result in the same jamming packing fraction ϕ_{J}, while pure-shear- and simple-shear-induced jamming occurs at a slightly higher ϕ_{J}^{*}, consistent with that found previously for simple shearing. A critical scaling analysis of pure shearing gives critical exponents consistent with those previously found for both isotropic compression and simple shearing.

Understanding the role of financial capacity in the delivery of opioid use disorder treatment.

BMC Health Serv Res

February 2023

Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, University of Chicago, 969 E. 60Th St., Chicago, IL, 60637, USA.

Opioid treatment programs must have adequate financial capacity to sustain operations and deliver a high standard of care for individuals suffering from opioid use disorder. However, there is limited consistency in the health services literature about the concept and relationship of organizational financial capacity and key outcome measures (wait time and retention). In this study, we explored five common measures of financial capacity that can be applied to opioid treatment programs: (a) reserve ratio, (b) equity ratio, (c) markup, (d) revenue growth, and (e) earned revenue.

The importance of the One Health concept in attempting to deal with the increasing levels of multidrug-resistant bacteria in both human and animal health is a challenge for the scientific community, policymakers, and the industry. The discovery of the plasmid-borne mobile colistin resistance () in 2015 poses a significant threat because of the ability of these plasmids to move between different bacterial species through horizontal gene transfer. In light of these findings, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries implement surveillance strategies to detect the presence of plasmid-mediated colistin-resistant microorganisms and take suitable measures to control and prevent their dissemination.

Iron-dependent post transcriptional control of mitochondrial aconitase expression.

Metallomics

January 2023

Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1415 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706, USA.

Iron regulatory proteins (IRPs) control the translation of animal cell mRNAs encoding proteins with diverse roles. This includes the iron storage protein ferritin and the tricarboxylic cycle (TCA) enzyme mitochondrial aconitase (ACO2) through iron-dependent binding of IRP to the iron responsive element (IRE) in the 5' untranslated region (UTR). To further elucidate the mechanisms allowing IRPs to control translation of 5' IRE-containing mRNA differentially, we focused on Aco2 mRNA, which is weakly controlled versus the ferritins.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder clinically defined by gradual cognitive impairment and alteration in executive function. We conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of a clinically and neuropathologically characterized cohort of 296 brains, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and non-demented controls (ND), exploring the relationship with the RNA expression from matched donors. We detected 5246 CpGs and 832 regions differentially methylated, finding overlap with previous EWAS but also new associations.

Small organic molecules have been shown to produce sufficient power densities allowing them to be environmentally friendly renewable fuel sources and an important part of fuel cell research. Affiliated experimental work found propylene glycol, as a source of renewable fuel, produces viable power densities when utilized with an alkaline-acid fuel cell and a Pd(111) catalyst. There is limited theoretical work on propylene glycol's energy reaction pathway.

Down the membrane hole: Ion channels in protozoan parasites.

PLoS Pathog

December 2022

Department of Biological Science, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, California State University Fullerton, Fullerton, California, United States of America.

Parasitic diseases caused by protozoans are highly prevalent around the world, disproportionally affecting developing countries, where coinfection with other microorganisms is common. Control and treatment of parasitic infections are constrained by the lack of specific and effective drugs, plus the rapid emergence of resistance. Ion channels are main drug targets for numerous diseases, but their potential against protozoan parasites is still untapped.

Background: Baseline testing of objective lower limb function may help clinicians make more informed return-to-sport (RTS) decisions in the event of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. However, as these tests are based on physical performance, it is possible that they improve during the season as athletes get stronger and fitter. Hence, it may be difficult to ascertain the patient's preinjury status and have an accurate reference for comparison when determining readiness for RTS.

Neopterin, a product of activated white blood cells, is a marker of nonspecific inflammation that can capture variation in immune investment or disease-related immune activity and can be collected noninvasively in urine. Mounting studies in wildlife point to lifetime patterns in neopterin related to immune development, aging, and certain diseases, but rarely are studies able to assess whether neopterin can capture multiple concurrent dimensions of health and disease in a single system. We assessed the relationship between urinary neopterin stored on filter paper and multiple metrics of health and disease in wild geladas (Theropithecus gelada), primates endemic to the Ethiopian highlands.

Ecology, evolution, and conservation of Ethiopia's biodiversity.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

December 2022

Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis, Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo, Oslo 0371, Norway.

Ethiopia is home to one of the richest and most unique assemblages of fauna and flora on the African continent. Contained within its borders are two major centers of endemism, the mesic Roof of Africa (also known as the Ethiopian Highlands) and the arid Horn of Africa, resulting from the country's varied topography and consequent geographic isolation. These centers of endemism are crucial to global conservation as evidenced by their classification within the Eastern Afromontane and Horn of Africa biodiversity hotspots, respectively.
