Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains are a major challenge for clinicians due, in part, to their resistance to most β-lactams, the first-line treatment for methicillin-susceptible . A phenotype termed "NaHCO-responsiveness" has been identified, wherein many clinical MRSA isolates are rendered susceptible to standard-of-care β-lactams in the presence of physiologically relevant concentrations of NaHCO, and ; moreover, such "NaHCO-responsive" isolates can be effectively cleared by β-lactams from target tissues in experimental infective endocarditis (IE). One mechanistic impact of NaHCO exposure on NaHCO-responsive MRSA is to repress WTA synthesis.

Auditory discrimination in aging bilinguals vs. monolinguals with and without hearing loss.

Front Aging

January 2024

Department of Communication Disorders, Doctor of Audiology Program, California State University-Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, United States.

Demands for effective assessments of speech perception specific to the aging brain are increasing, as the impacts of hearing loss on an individual's functional health, socialization, and cognition have become more widely recognized. Understanding the mechanisms behind the optimal function of the aging brain in relation to speech and language is challenging, especially in the bilingual population where the language learning and language interference processes could be mistaken for perceptual difficulty. Age-related presbycusis is unavoidable, and the contributions of this sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) process on impaired speech recognition are not completely understood.

Global surface temperatures are projected to increase in the future; this will modify regional precipitation regimes and increase global atmospheric drying. Despite many drought studies examining the consequences of reduced precipitation, there are few experimental studies exploring plant responses to atmospheric drying via relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). We examined eight native California perennial grass species grown in pots in a greenhouse in Los Angeles, California for 34 weeks.

Drivers of arthropod biodiversity in an urban ecosystem.

Sci Rep

January 2024

Marine and Environmental Section, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, 90089, USA.

Our world is becoming increasingly urbanized with a growing human population concentrated around cities. The expansion of urban areas has important consequences for biodiversity, yet the abiotic drivers of biodiversity in urban ecosystems have not been well characterized for the most diverse group of animals on the planet, arthropods. Given their great diversity, comparatively small home ranges, and ability to disperse, arthropods make an excellent model for studying which factors can most accurately predict urban biodiversity.

Language researchers have historically either dismissed or ignored completely behavioral accounts of language acquisition while at the same time acknowledging the important role of experience in language learning. Many language researchers have also moved away from theories based on an innate generative universal grammar and promoted experience-dependent and usage-based theories of language. These theories suggest that hearing and using language in its context is critical for learning language.

Unlike the majority of sauropsids, which breathe primarily through costal and abdominal muscle contractions, extant crocodilians have evolved the hepatic piston pump, a unique additional ventilatory mechanism powered by the diaphragmaticus muscle. This muscle originates from the bony pelvis, wrapping around the abdominal viscera, extending cranially to the liver. The liver then attaches to the caudal margin of the lungs, resulting in a sub-fusiform morphology for the entire "pulmo-hepatic-diaphragmatic" structure.

C-to-U RNA editing in angiosperm chloroplasts requires a large suite of proteins bound together in the editosome. The editosome is comprised of PPR proteins, RIP/MORFs, OZ proteins, and ORRM proteins that physically interact in high molecular weight complexes. The specific functions of non-PPR editing factors in the editosome are unclear, however, specific subsets of editing sites are affected by absence of non-PPR editing factors.

As applied behavior analysis (ABA) is widely prescribed as an intervention for autistic children, ABA practitioners must have a thorough understanding of the impact of language and culture on the individuals and families they serve. The twin purposes of this article are to discuss cultural humility in ASD service delivery, and to provide an overview of practice parameters for the expansion of equity and inclusion. These efforts are guided by the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health and Health Care.

Instructors' Gestural Accuracy Affects Geology Learning in Interaction with Students' Spatial Skills.

J Intell

October 2023

Department of Psychology, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802, USA.

Complex and often unobservable STEM constructs and processes are represented using a variety of representations, including iconic gestures in which the body is configured or moved to resemble a referent's spatial properties or actions. Earlier researchers have suggested links between gesturing and expertise, leading some to recommend instructional gestures. Earlier research, however, has been largely correlational; furthermore, some gestures may be made with misleading positions or movements.

Allometric relationships among the dimensions of leaves and their cells hold across diverse eudicotyledons, but have remained untested in the leaves of grasses. We hypothesised that geometric (proportional) allometries of cell sizes across tissues and of leaf dimensions would arise due to the coordination of cell development and that of cell functions such as water, nutrient and energy transport, and that cell sizes across tissues would be associated with light-saturated photosynthetic rate. We tested predictions across 27 globally distributed C and C grass species grown in a common garden.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemoresistance in prostate cancer presents significant treatment challenges, and the role of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling in advanced cases is not well understood.
  • This study found that BMP type I receptors, ALK2 and ALK3, were more active in chemoresistant prostate cancer cells, leading to increased BMP signaling compared to chemosensitive cells.
  • Inhibiting BMP signaling with DMH1 made chemoresistant cells more responsive to the chemotherapy drug docetaxel, reduced their ability to migrate and invade, and diminished cancer stem cell characteristics.

Palliative care often plays a pivotal role in supporting informal caregivers of persons living with dementia who experience a lack of continuity in care. Dementia caregiver activation, the caregiver's willingness and ability to navigate care needs, requires communication skills for developing relationships with healthcare providers. Communication activation is important because caregivers facilitate physician and patient information exchange.

The vertebrate respiratory system is challenging to study. The complex relationship between the lungs and adjacent tissues, the vast structural diversity of the respiratory system both within individuals and between taxa, its mobility (or immobility) and distensibility, and the difficulty of quantifying and visualizing functionally important internal negative spaces have all impeded descriptive, functional, and comparative research. As a result, there is a relative paucity of three-dimensional anatomical information on this organ system in all vertebrate groups (including humans) relative to other regions of the body.
