Accurately assessing the low-temperature performance of asphalt materials is important for asphalt pavements in cold regions with large temperature differences. This study investigates the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the low-temperature performance of basalt fiber-rubber powder composite modified asphalt mixtures (BRMAM). The influence of basalt fibers content on the mechanical properties of asphalt binder was characterized through basic property tests and bending beam rheometer (BBR) assessments.

Wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires consume fuels, such as vegetation and structural materials, leaving behind ash composed primarily of pyrogenic carbon and metal oxides. However, there is currently limited understanding of the role of WUI fire ash from different sources as a source of paramagnetic species such as environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) and transition metals in the environment. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to detect and quantify paramagnetic species, including organic persistent free radicals and transition metal spins, in fifty-three fire ash and soil samples collected following the North Complex Fire and the Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit (LNU) Lightning Complex Fire, California, 2020.

The 2018 Camp Fire was a large late-year (November) wildfire that produced an urban firestorm in the Town of Paradise, California, USA, and destroyed more than 18 000 structures. Runoff from burned wildland areas is known to contain ash, which can transport contaminants including metals into nearby watersheds. However, due to historically infrequent occurrences, the effect of wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, such as the Camp Fire, on surface water quality has not been well-characterized.

Soybean () production is greatly affected by persistent and/or intermittent droughts in rainfed soybean-growing regions worldwide. Symbiotic N fixation (SNF) in soybean can also be significantly hampered even under moderate drought stress. The objective of this study was to identify genomic regions associated with shoot carbon isotope ratio (δC) as a surrogate measure for water use efficiency (WUE), nitrogen isotope ratio (δN) to assess relative SNF, N concentration ([N]), and carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N).

Nearly 40% of Americans have obesity and are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Skeletal muscle is responsible for >80% of insulin-stimulated glucose uptake that is attenuated by the inflammatory milieu of obesity and augmented by aerobic exercise. The receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) is an inflammatory receptor directly linking metabolic dysfunction with inflammation.

Introduction: Young women diagnosed with cancer are at an increased risk for infertility compared to women without a cancer diagnosis. Consuming a healthful diet comprised of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats has been found to improve both fertility and cancer survivorship. Given this reason, dietary interventions tailored to support female cancer survivors with fertility challenges are of immense importance.

The falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is a common non-destructive testing method for evaluating the structural capacity of pavements. At present, data processing of the FWD test mainly focuses on the deflection data, while paying less attention to the deflection-time history. Because a FWD is equipped with impulse loads and geophones, which allow for the generation and capture of surface wave signal propagation, it is hypothesized that Rayleigh wave dispersion theory can be applied to calculate the modulus profile along the pavement depth by analysing the dispersive properties of the deflection signal measured during FWD tests.

Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) cause significant economic damage to crop plants, spurring demand for safe, affordable, and sustainable nematicides. A previous study by our research team showed that the combination of two nematicidal secondary metabolites (SMs) derived from bacteria, -cinnamic acid (-CA), and (4)-5-phenylpent-4-enoic acid (PPA) have a synergistic effect against RKNs in vitro. In this study, we considered in planta assays to assess the effects of this SM mixture on the virulence and reproductive fitness of the RKN in a cowpea.

Prior stimulus familiarity has a variety of effects on visual working memory representations and processes. However, it is still unclear how familiarity interacts with the veridical correspondence between mnemonic representation and external stimuli. Here, we examined the effect of familiarity on two aspects of mnemonic correspondence, precision and accuracy, in visual working memory.

A model of populations dynamics coupled with transmission dynamics is extended to include mechanisms of larval flushing which are known to occur. Flushing dynamics are modeled using a simulation that incorporates seasonal, autocorrelated, and random components based on 30 years of rainfall data for the Kakamega District of the western Kenya highlands. The model demonstrates that flushing phenomena can account for differences between regions with the same annual larval habitat pattern, changing the World Health Organization endemicity classification from either hyperendemic or holoendemic to hypoendemic disease patterns.

Although metal and metalloid concentrations in wildfire ashes have been documented, the nature and concentrations of incidental nanomaterials (INMs) in wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire ashes have received considerably less attention. In this study, the total metal and metalloid concentrations of 57 vegetation, structural, and vehicle ashes and underlying soils collected at the WUI following the 2020 fire season in northern California - North Complex Fire and LNU Lightning Complex Fire - were determined using inductively coupled plasma-time of flight-mass spectrometry after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The concentrations of Ti, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sb, Co, Bi, Cr, Ba, As, Rb, and W are generally higher in structural/vehicle-derived ashes than in vegetation-derived ashes and soils.

The cardiovascular and skeletal muscle systems are intrinsically interconnected, sharing the goal of delivering oxygen to metabolically active tissue. Deficiencies within those systems that affect oxygen delivery to working tissues are a hallmark of advancing age. Oxygen delivery and utilization are reflected as muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) and are assessed using near-infrared resonance spectroscopy (NIRS).

Avian influenza viruses can pose serious risks to agricultural production, human health, and wildlife. An understanding of viruses in wild reservoir species across time and space is important to informing surveillance programs, risk models, and potential population impacts for vulnerable species. Although it is recognized that influenza A virus prevalence peaks in reservoir waterfowl in late summer through autumn, temporal and spatial variation across species has not been fully characterized.

MicroRNA-375 (miR-375) is upregulated in the islets of some diabetics and is correlated with poor outcome. Previous work in our laboratory showed that cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) reduces miR-375 expression and could provide a way to restore normal miR-375 levels, however the transcription repression mechanism is unknown. Using a chromatin immunoprecipitation assay we show that cAMP response element modulator (CREM) binds to the miR-375 promoter 3-fold above background and we find that CREM represses transcription from the miR-375 promoter 1.

Entomopathogenic nematodes of the genus have a mutualistic relationship with bacteria of the genus and together they form an antagonist partnership against their insect hosts. The nematodes (third-stage infective juveniles, or IJs) protect the bacteria from the external environmental stressors and vector them from one insect host to another. produce secondary metabolites and antimicrobial compounds inside the insect that protect the cadaver from soil saprobes and scavengers.
