Idiopathic non-mast cell angioedema (INMA) is a rare disease typified by recurrent attacks of cutaneous and subcutaneous swelling. Every attack carries the potential for severe morbidity and, in the case of laryngeal involvement, mortality. Whereas therapies approved for hereditary angioedema (HAE) have been used in the care of patients with INMA, little is known with regard to their efficacy for the treatment of this disease.

Since its first description more than a decade ago, our understanding of the clinical impact of hereditary alpha-tryptasemia has continued to evolve. First considered to be a genetic disorder with a subset of patients having a syndromic presentation composed of connective tissue abnormalities, symptoms of autonomic dysfunction, and findings of mast cell activation, we now know that hereditary alpha-tryptasemia is a common genetic trait and modifier of mast cell-mediated reactions. More recent studies have shown some previously held associations with congenital hypermobility and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) to be lacking, and illuminated previously unappreciated associations with clonal and nonclonal mast cell disorders.

Background: We sought consensus among practising respiratory physicians on the prediction, identification and monitoring of progression in patients with fibrosing interstitial lung disease (ILD) using a modified Delphi process.
Methods: Following a literature review, statements on the prediction, identification and monitoring of progression of ILD were developed by a panel of physicians with specialist expertise. Practising respiratory physicians were sent a survey asking them to indicate their level of agreement with these statements on a binary scale or 7-point Likert scale (- 3 to 3), or to select answers from a list.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is widespread, under-recognized, and under-treated, impacting the health and quality of life for millions. The current gold standard for sleep apnea testing is based on the in-lab sleep study, which is costly, cumbersome, not readily available and represents a well-known roadblock to managing this huge societal burden. Assessment of neuromuscular function involved in the upper airway using electromyography (EMG) has shown potential to characterize and diagnose sleep apnea, while the development of transmembranous electromyography (tmEMG), a painless surface probe, has made this opportunity practical and highly feasible.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the rapid implementation of telemedicine for HIV care at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the United States. We sought to understand use of telemedicine (telephone and video) at two FQHCs in Los Angeles, and the client attitudes towards and experiences with telemedicine as part of future HIV care.
Methods: We conducted surveys with 271 people living with HIV (PLHIV), with questions covering sociodemographic factors, telemedicine attitudes and experiences, technological literacy, and access to technological resources and privacy.

Objectives: Altitude is a known factor in cardiovascular disease, but its impact on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether living at high altitudes affects the extent of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and left ventricular (LV) strain in HCM patients.
Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted across four hospitals located at different altitudes in China.

People living with HIV (HIV+) are roughly twice as likely to smoke cigarettes (Smok+) as the general population. With the advent of effective antiretroviral therapies, it is increasingly important to understand the effects of chronic HIV infection and cigarette smoking on brain function and cognition since HIV+ individuals have heightened neuroinflammation and cognitive deficits even with such therapies. Based on prior studies demonstrating that smoking reduces a marker for neuroinflammation in HIV- individuals, we hypothesized that HIV+/Smok+ individuals would have less neuroinflammation and better cognitive control than HIV+/Smok- individuals.

Human pluripotent stem cell-derived β-cells (SC-β-cells) represent an alternative cell source for transplantation in diabetic patients. Although mitogens could in theory be used to expand β-cells, adult β-cells very rarely replicate. In contrast, newly formed β-cells, including SC-β-cells, display higher proliferative capacity and distinct transcriptional and functional profiles.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) often goes undiagnosed due to the absence of clear biomarkers. We sought to identify voice biomarkers for MDD and separate biomarkers indicative of MDD predisposition from biomarkers reflecting current depressive symptoms. Using a two-stage meta-analytic design to remove confounds, we tested the association between features representing vocal pitch and MDD in a multisite case-control cohort study of Chinese women with recurrent depression.

Sensors are indispensable tools of modern life that are ubiquitously used in diverse settings ranging from smartphones and autonomous vehicles to the healthcare industry and space technology. By interfacing multiple sensors that collectively interact with the signal to be measured, one can go beyond the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) attainable by the individual constituting elements. Such techniques have also been implemented in the quantum regime, where a linear increase in the SNR has been achieved via using entangled states.

Large multiprotein machines are central to many biological processes. However, stoichiometric determination of protein complex subunits in their native states presents a significant challenge. This study addresses the limitations of current tools in accuracy and precision by introducing concatemer-assisted stoichiometry analysis (CASA).

Wetland methane emissions are the primary natural contributor to the global methane budget, accounting for approximately one-third of total emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) serves as the major sink of methane in anoxic wetland sediments, where electron acceptors are present, thereby effectively mitigating its emissions. Nevertheless, environmental controls on electron acceptors, in particular, the ubiquitous iron oxides, involved in AOM are poorly understood.

Background/aim: Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are vascular malformations characterized by dysmorphic, aberrant vasculature. During previous surgeries of compact nidus brain AVMs (representing the majority of cases), we have observed a "shiny" plane between nidal and perinidal AVM vessels and the surrounding grey and white matter and hypothesized that preoperative neuroimaging of brain AVMs may show a neuroradiological correlate of these intraoperative observations.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed and analyzed multiplanar and multisequence 3-Tesla magnetic resonance (3T MR) imaging in five consecutive brain AVMs with special attention on imaging characteristics of the brain-AVM interface, i.

Background/aim: Ifosfamide is used clinically with doxorubicin as first-line chemotherapy for soft-tissue sarcoma. However, ifosfamide efficacy for soft-tissue sarcoma is limited due to frequent occurence of ifosfamide resistance and thus more effective therapy is needed. The present study aimed to determine the synergy of recombinant methioninase (rMETase) plus ifosfamide against HT1080 human fibrosarcoma cells in vitro.

Introduction: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder classically associated with multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts and skeletal anomalies. However, its significant phenotypic heterogeneity often delays the diagnosis. Here, we undertake the first comprehensive characterisation of NBCCS and congenital urinary tract anomalies.

(Mtb) is a leading cause of death, with an escalating global occurrence of drug-resistant infections that are partially attributed to cell wall mycolic acids derived from type II fatty acid biosynthesis (FAS-II). Here, the central acyl carrier protein, AcpM, contributes to the regulation of complex and specific protein-protein interactions (PPIs), though the orchestration of these events remain largely unresolved due to unique features of AcpM. Limitations include complexities in generating modified AcpM in a single state.
