Understanding Support for Municipal Political Parties: Evidence from Canada.

The province of Ontario, Canada, has a longstanding history of non-partisanship in municipal elections. In this distinctive context, we report results on citizen attitudes toward municipal partisanship using a survey of eligible voters in Canada's most populous province. Using a mixed-methods approach, we focus on three interrelated research questions.

While there is a growing interest in citizen-led initiatives, there is still no consensus on how to situate them, especially in relation to state institutions. On the one hand, citizen-led initiatives are seen as being co-opted by formal institutions in a context of austerity. On the other hand, these initiatives are often presented as "spaces of resistance" to neoliberalism, or as political acts of reclaiming the city.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Inborn Errors of Immunity: Current State and Future Promise.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) research within medicine has exponentially increased over the last decade, with studies showcasing the potential of AI/ML algorithms to improve clinical practice and outcomes. Ongoing research and efforts to develop AI-based models have expanded to aid in the identification of inborn errors of immunity (IEI). The use of larger electronic health record data sets, coupled with advances in phenotyping precision and enhancements in ML techniques, has the potential to significantly improve the early recognition of IEI, thereby increasing access to equitable care.

Cariogenicity and Calories of Meals Served at a Pre-Kindergarten School-Based Meal Program.

To analyze the cariogenicity of meals served in a pre-kindergarten program and its potential influence on early childhood caries (ECC) risk in socioeconomically disadvantaged children. This study examined 123 school-provided meals over 43 days at the United Nation Childhood Development Center, part of the Oakland Unified School District pre-kindergarten program. Underrepresented in Medicine Trainees' Sense of Belonging and Professional Identity Formation after Participation in the Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity Program.

Background: There are persistent structural barriers that threaten inclusion and retention of underrepresented in medicine (UIM) residents and fellows (trainees) as future faculty in academic medicine. We developed the Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity (LEAD) Program at a single, academic institution, to address these barriers through a 10-month longitudinal curriculum across Graduate Medical Education for trainees to develop leadership and scholarship skills in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Objective: Explore how participation in LEAD impacted UIM trainees' sense of belonging and professional identity formation in academic medicine as well as perceptions about pursuing a career in academic medicine and future leadership roles.

A novel hybrid prosthesis for open repair of acute DeBakey type I dissection with malperfusion: Early results from the PERSEVERE trial.

Background: Outcomes after hemiarch repair for acute DeBakey type I aortic dissection (ADTI) remain unfavorable, with high rates of major adverse events and negative aortic remodeling. The PERSEVERE study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of the AMDS Hybrid prosthesis, a novel bare metal stent, in patients presenting with preoperative malperfusion.

Methods: PERSEVERE is a prospective single-arm investigational study conducted at 26 sites in the United States.

Background: As HIV-positive individuals utilizing highly active antiretroviral therapy live longer, the burden of breast cancer increases in the population. Breast reconstruction is an integral aspect of surgical treatment for many patients after a breast cancer diagnosis, prompting this examination of the characteristics and outcomes of breast reconstruction in this growing patient population.

Methods: Using Merative MarketScan Research Databases, a large multipayer database, HIV-positive adult patients who underwent autologous or implant-based breast reconstruction between 2007 and 2021 were identified using International Classification of Disease codes and Common Procedural Terminology codes.

Advances and ongoing challenges in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders presented at the CEGIR/TIGERs Symposium at the 2024 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology meeting.

The Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal disease Researchers (CEGIR) and The International Gastrointestinal Eosinophil Researchers (TIGERs) organized a daylong symposium at the 2024 annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. The symposium featured new discoveries in basic and translational research as well as debates on the mechanisms and management of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases. Updates on recent clinical trials and consensus guidelines were also presented.

Performance of Supplemental US Screening in Women with Dense Breasts and Varying Breast Cancer Risk: Results from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium.

Background It is unclear whether breast US screening outcomes for women with dense breasts vary with levels of breast cancer risk. Purpose To evaluate US screening outcomes for female patients with dense breasts and different estimated breast cancer risk levels. Materials and Methods This retrospective observational study used data from US screening examinations in female patients with heterogeneously or extremely dense breasts conducted from January 2014 to October 2020 at 24 radiology facilities within three Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) registries.

Reliability of CT Enterography for Describing Fibrostenosing Crohn Disease.

Background Standardized methods to measure and describe Crohn disease strictures at CT enterography are needed to guide clinical decision making and for use in therapeutic studies. Purpose To assess the reliability of CT enterography features to describe Crohn disease strictures and their correlation with stricture severity. Materials and Methods A retrospective study was conducted in 43 adult patients with symptomatic terminal ileal Crohn disease strictures who underwent standard-of-care CT enterography at a tertiary care center at the Cleveland Clinic between January 2008 and August 2016.

Human Papillomavirus as Nontraditional Cardiovascular Risk Factor: Fact or Fiction? Part 2.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the US and worldwide, with more than 42 million Americans infected with types of HPV that are known to cause disease. While the link between HPV and the development of a variety of cancers has been strongly established, recent literature has demonstrated a potential association between HPV and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, despite plausible mechanisms for the development of cardiovascular disease with HPV infection, a causative relationship has yet to be firmly established, in part due to potential confounding risk factors between the two.

Concept of Double-eyelid Segments Ratio: Practical Application in Asian Blepharoplasty.

Background: There have been few articles on the vertical dimension of the Asian upper eyelid, the eyelid crease segment, and the upper palpebral segment. The eyelid crease height manifests differently depending on whether it is closed (on extreme downgaze), open, or on upward gaze. This study will investigate a ratio practical for use in Asian blepharoplasty (external incisional method).

Dotatate PET/CT and Ac-Dotatate Therapy for Somatostatin Receptor-expressing Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Background Somatostatin receptors, and specifically somatostatin receptor type 2 (SSTR2), have primarily been associated with neuroendocrine tumors and have revolutionized the imaging and therapy of patients with these tumors. SSTR2 is expressed on other tumors at lower prevalence. Purpose To evaluate the potential of SSTR2-targeted imaging and therapy in patients with breast cancer.

Overestimation of the Ischemic Core Is Associated With Higher Core Lesion Volume and Degree of Reperfusion After Thrombectomy.

Background CT perfusion (CTP)-derived baseline ischemic core volume (ICV) can overestimate the true extent of infarction, which may result in exclusion of patients with ischemic stroke from endovascular treatment (EVT). Purpose To determine whether ischemic core overestimation is associated with larger ICV and degree of recanalization. Materials and Methods This retrospective multicenter cohort study included patients with acute ischemic stroke triaged at multimodal CT who underwent EVT between January 2015 and January 2022.

Background: Existing therapeutic strategies are challenged by long times to achieve effect and often require frequent administration. Peanut-allergic individuals would benefit from a therapeutic that provides rapid protection against accidental exposure within days of administration while carrying little risk of adverse reactions.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the expression of root angulation in canine, premolar, and first molar teeth adjacent to first and second premolar extraction sites in the maxilla after treatment with an initial series of Invisalign aligners (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif).

Methods: Adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with at least 1 first and/or second premolar extraction in the maxilla and satisfying strict selection criteria were evaluated. Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, food antigen-driven esophageal disorder. Connective tissue disorders (CTDs) and esophageal connective tissue alterations are associated with EoE. Therefore, angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockade with losartan, an accepted CTD treatment, is a potential EoE treatment.
