Trans-urocanic acid (UCA), an isomer of cis-UCA that is mainly located in the skin, has recently been reported to have a role in short-term working memory and in the consolidation, reconsolidation and retrieval of long-term memory. However, its effect on memory acquisition remains unclear. In the present study, the effect of UCA on short-term and long-term memory acquisition in mice was investigated using novel object recognition (NOR) and object location recognition (OLR) protocols that each involved three stages: habituation, sampling and testing.

Hospital patient experiences of contact isolation for antimicrobial resistant organisms in relation to health care-associated infections: A systematic review and narrative synthesis of the evidence.

Am J Infect Control

November 2023

Department of Nursing and Community Health, School of Health and Life Sciences, Research Centre for Health, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, UK. Electronic address:

Background: The alarming growth of antimicrobial resistance organisms (AMRs) and the threat caused by health care-associated infections require hospitalized individuals who are infected or colonized with AMRs to be cared for in isolation, predominantly in single rooms. None of the existing reviews focus on or specifically address the patient's experience of being cared for in contact isolation when affected by AMRs exploring this specific context.

Methods: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidance for the conduct of systematic reviews was applied.

Environmental reservoirs of the drug-resistant pathogenic yeast Candida auris.

PLoS Pathog

April 2023

Biological and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Stirling, Stirling, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • Candida auris is a newly recognized pathogenic yeast with ambiguous environmental origins and transmission pathways, raising concerns for public health.
  • It has adaptations for surviving increased temperatures, potentially tied to climate change, suggesting it may be the first human fungal pathogen emerging from such environmental shifts.
  • The release of antifungal chemicals into nature likely contributes to drug-resistant strains, highlighting the need to study C. auris's environmental behavior and the impact of climate change and pollution on its spread.

Objective: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) is associated with sexual and drug-related behaviours. To stem the tide of HCV infection in GBMSM, regular testing leading to early diagnosis and treatment as prevention is vital. This study aimed to evaluate the success of current HCV testing guidelines from the perspective of GBMSM in four Celtic nations.

Background: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are at high risk of developing respiratory health issues. The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded this, with serious consequences, and for some, death. Despite home-based oxygen saturation monitoring being recommended for people with ID, there is a stark lack of evidence in the literature on its feasibility.

Background: The quality of school-based sex and relationships education (SRE) is variable in the UK. Digitally-based interventions can usefully supplement teacher-delivered lessons and positively impact sexual health knowledge. Designed to address gaps in core SRE knowledge, STASH (Sexually Transmitted infections And Sexual Health) is a peer-led social network intervention adapted from the successful ASSIST (A Stop Smoking in Schools Trial) model, and based on Diffusion of Innovation theory.

This systematic review, commissioned and funded by WHO, aimed to update a review of infection prevention and control (IPC) interventions at a national level to inform a review of their IPC Core Components guidelines (PROSPERO CRD42021297376). CENTRAL, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and WHO IRIS were searched for studies meeting Cochrane's Effective Practice and Organisation of Care (EPOC) design criteria, published from April 19, 2017, to Oct 14, 2021. Primary research studies examining national IPC interventions in acute hospitals in any country with outcomes related to rates of health-care-associated infections were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of two interventions, a personalized exercise program (PEP) and a cognitive behavioral approach (CBA), for patients with chronic fatigue linked to inflammatory rheumatic diseases compared to standard care (UC).
  • After analyzing data from a clinical trial over 56 weeks, it was found that both PEP and CBA were more expensive than UC, with PEP being significantly more effective at improving patients' quality of life.
  • The findings suggest that adding PEP to standard care is likely a cost-effective option, with high probability of being beneficial to the UK healthcare system based on cost-per-quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained.

Baseline characteristics of people experiencing homelessness with a recent drug overdose in the PHOENIx pilot randomised controlled trial.

Harm Reduct J

April 2023

General Practice and Primary Care, School of Health and Wellbeing, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

Background: Drug-related deaths in Scotland are the highest in Europe. Half of all deaths in people experiencing homelessness are drug related, yet we know little about the unmet health needs of people experiencing homelessness with recent non-fatal overdose, limiting a tailored practice and policy response to a public health crisis.

Methods: People experiencing homelessness with at least one non-fatal street drug overdose in the previous 6 months were recruited from 20 venues in Glasgow, Scotland, and randomised into PHOENIx plus usual care, or usual care.

  • Heel pressure ulcers pose serious health risks, including pain, limited mobility, and potential severe complications like sepsis or amputation, yet evidence regarding the effectiveness of offloading boots in preventing these ulcers is lacking.
  • A realistic evaluation involving interviews with eight Tissue Viability Nurse Specialists was conducted to investigate how offloading devices are utilized, who they are used for, and the circumstances surrounding their use in hospital settings.
  • The study found that while offloading devices are commonly used, they are not suitable for every patient or situation, highlighting the importance of identifying at-risk individuals for more effective and economical use of these devices in preventing heel pressure ulcers.
