Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine how the shape of the calcaneal tuberosity (the back part of the heel bone) relates to the likelihood of developing retrocalcaneal bursitis in regular runners.
  • It involved 30 runners with a history of the condition and 30 without, using X-rays and ultrasounds to assess the calcaneus and bursa characteristics.
  • Results showed that a flat calcaneal tuberosity increases the risk of bursitis fourfold, especially in individuals with a significant calcaneus slope and thicker Achilles tendons.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the results of arthroscopic calcaneoplasty for the treatment of posterior calcaneal bursitis and Haglund's disease. The study involved 28 patients who underwent 30 arthroscopic surgeries for Haglund's disease from 2015 to 2019. Retrocalcanealneoplasty and supracalcaneoplasty were performed using a shaver, an ablator; with the help of a drill, the bone was resected until the contact in the Achilles tendon was eliminated in the position of dorsiflexion of the foot.

A Narrative Review of the Classification and Use of Diagnostic Ultrasound for Conditions of the Achilles Tendon.

Diagnostics (Basel)

November 2020

Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, 543 Taylor Ave, Columbus, OH 43203, USA.

Enthesitis is a cardinal feature of spondyloarthropathies. The Achilles insertion on the calcaneus is a commonly evaluated enthesis located at the hindfoot, generally resulting in hindfoot pain and possible tendon enlargement. For decades, diagnosis of enthesitis was based upon patient history of hindfoot or posterior ankle pain and clinical examination revealing tenderness and/or enlargement at the site of the tendon insertion.

Calcaneoplasty coupled with an insertional Achilles tendon reattachment procedure for the prevention of secondary calcaneal impingement: a retrospective study.

Ther Adv Chronic Dis

August 2020

Institute of Sports Medicine, Beijing Key Laboratory of Sports Injury, Peking University Third Hospital, 49 North Garden Road, Haidian District, Beijing 100191, PR China.

Background: Posterior heel pain may occur after an Achilles insertional rupture reattachment procedure and could be attributed to an impingement between the calcaneal tuberosity and Achilles tendon, which could be observed using postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moreover, such impingement, which may be associated with postoperative pain symptoms, could be relieved by calcaneoplasty.

Methods: Postoperative Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS), American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, Foot Function Index (FFI), Ankle Activity Score (AAS), and Tegner score were obtained and compared between 10 patients who underwent calcaneoplasty (calcaneoplasty group) and 11 patients who did not receive calcaneoplasty (non-calcaneoplasty group).
