Introduction: Few controlled trials have assessed the benefits of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on cognitive functions and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in bipolar disorder (BD). This study aims to evaluate the impact of MBCT adjunctive treatment on these variables. Main hypothesis was that MBCT would improve cognitive functioning and BDNF more than Psychoeducation and TAU.

It is estimated that approximately one in three women develop chronic venous disease (CVD) during pregnancy, a broad spectrum of morphofunctional disorders affecting the venous system in different regions of the body, including the lower limbs. A growing body of evidence supports the diverse maternofetal consequences derived from this condition, with the placenta being an organ particularly affected. Among other consequences, having CVD during pregnancy has been associated with systemic inflammation and altered cytokines and chemokine profiles in the maternal and fetal serum related to this condition.

Obstetric diseases represent a highly complex medical challenge, especially regarding its clinical approach. The use of pharmacological agents during pregnancy is one of the main therapeutic alternatives in this group of patients; however, there is a general lack of knowledge about its use, efficacy, and possible adverse effects that may occur in routine clinical practice, even among medical professionals themselves. The high percentage of pregnant women who undergo drugs at some point during pregnancy, together with the developments that have occurred in recent years in the field of pharmacology, show the need for a detailed analysis that shows the existing current knowledge and helps in the clinical decision making.

Follow-up for More than 10 Years of Patients with Peritoneal Metastases Treated with Cytoreductive Surgery + Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy in a Specialized Unit.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have demonstrated their impact on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients with peritoneal metastases (PM). However, prior literature lacks evidence regarding any follow-up beyond 5 years. In this study, we analyse long-term OS and DFS (more than 10 years of follow-up) of patients undergoing CRS + HIPEC in a specialized unit.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the Carotid Triangle: An Effective Method for Monitoring the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery.

Objective: Our objective is the description of the technique of vagus nerve stimulation in carotid triangle in order to monitor the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

Methods: We stimulated the vagus nerve in the carotid triangle during 150 thyroid or parathyroid surgeries using a monopolar electromyography electrode inserted under the mastoid process towards the jugular foramen as a cathode, and using another subdermal electrode in the mastoid as an anode. Another complementary method of vagus stimulation was achieved with a pair of subdermal electrodes, placing the cathode at the mandibular angle and the anode at the mastoid.

Background: New interventions based on motor learning principles and neural plasticity have been tested among patients with ataxia and hemiparesis. Therapies of pedaling exercises have also shown their potential to induce improvements in muscle activity, strength, and balance. Virtual reality (VR) has been demonstrated as an effective tool for improving the adherence to physical therapy, but it is still undetermined if it promotes greater improvements than conventional therapy.

First-in-human demonstration of floating EMG sensors and stimulators wirelessly powered and operated by volume conduction.

Background: Recently we reported the design and evaluation of floating semi-implantable devices that receive power from and bidirectionally communicate with an external system using coupling by volume conduction. The approach, of which the semi-implantable devices are proof-of-concept prototypes, may overcome some limitations presented by existing neuroprostheses, especially those related to implant size and deployment, as the implants avoid bulky components and can be developed as threadlike devices. Here, it is reported the first-in-human acute demonstration of these devices for electromyography (EMG) sensing and electrical stimulation.

Background: Cognitive reserve (CR) is the mismatch between preserved cognition and neuropathological damage. Amyloidopathy in Parkinson's disease (PD) could be associated with faster progression to dementia, but the putative protective effect of CR is unknown.

No other lasso peptide has since then been studied to such an extent as microcin J25, yet, previous review articles merely skimmed over all the research done on this exceptional lasso peptide.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disorder that follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. Dietary treatment is the cornerstone of therapy and is based on natural protein restriction, Phe-free L-amino acid supplements (protein substitutes) and low protein foods. The aim of this project was to collect information about the clinical management of patients with PKU, focusing on understudied or unresolved issues such as blood phenylalanine (Phe) fluctuations and clinical symptoms, particularly gastro intestinal (GI) discomfort and sleep problems.

Automatic Detection of Magnetic Disturbances in Magnetic Inertial Measurement Unit Sensors Based on Recurrent Neural Networks.

This paper proposes a new methodology for the automatic detection of magnetic disturbances from magnetic inertial measurement unit (MIMU) sensors based on deep learning. The proposed approach considers magnetometer data as input to a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network and obtains a labeled time series output with the posterior probabilities of magnetic disturbance. We trained our algorithm on a data set that reproduces a wide range of magnetic perturbations and MIMU motions in a repeatable and reproducible way.

Robotic exoskeleton embodiment in post-stroke hemiparetic patients: an experimental study about the integration of the assistance provided by the REFLEX knee exoskeleton.

Hemiparetic gait is the most common motor-disorder after stroke and, in spite of rehabilitation efforts, it is persistent in 50% of community dwelling stroke-survivors. Robotic exoskeletons have been proposed as assistive devices to support impaired joints. An example of these devices is the REFLEX knee exoskeleton, which assists the gait of hemiparetic subjects and whose action seems to be properly embodied by stroke survivors, who were able to adapt the motion of their non-assisted limbs and, therefore, reduce their compensation mechanisms.

The correlation dimension (CD) is a nonlinear measure of the complexity of invariant sets. First introduced for describing low-dimensional chaotic attractors, it has been later extended to the analysis of experimental electroencephalographic (EEG), magnetoencephalographic (MEG), and local field potential (LFP) recordings. However, its direct application to high-dimensional (dozens of signals) and high-definition (kHz sampling rate) 2HD data revealed a controversy in the results.

Smoking has been considering a crucial factor in promoting skin and systemic aging that is associated with the development of a low-level, systemic, chronic inflammation known as "inflammaging" in which monocytes play a pivotal role. Our aim was to investigate the effects of AM3 plus antioxidants vs placebo in the activation status, function of monocytes and cutaneous aging parameters in healthy smoker middle-aged women. A total of 32 women were 1:1 randomly assigned to AM3 plus antioxidants or placebo for three months.
