This study assessed trace metal pollution in the Essaouira protected coastal area (Atlantic coast of Morocco) using the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as a bio-indicator and evaluated potential human health risks from mussel consumption. Samples were collected seasonally at 8:00 am from April 2017 to February 2018, and metal concentrations in mussel tissues were analyzed using ICP-AES. The metals were found in descending order: Fe > Zn > Al > Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd > Ag, with significant spatial and seasonal variations.

The stereoisomers (E)-2,2-dimethyl-4-(4-subsitutedstyryl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-[1,5]-benzodiazepine were synthesized via the condensation reaction of 2,2,4-trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-1,5-benzodiazepine (BZD) with the benzaldehyde derivatives in ethanol. The chemical structure of the prepared products was confirmed by NMR (H and C), HRMS, and X-ray analysis of the crystal structure . The condensation reaction was examined using DFT calculations at the theoretical level of B3LYP/6-31G(d) to elucidate the chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity and the reaction mechanism of the produced isomer.

Maxillofacial trauma is prevalent, particularly among the young population, often stemming from assaults, road accidents, or sports-related mishaps. Traditional intubation methods for managing these injuries can be challenging, especially with occluso-facial fractures requiring intermaxillary blocking for dental articulation restoration. Effective management requires interdisciplinary collaboration between emergency physicians, anesthetists, and maxillofacial surgeons.

Because of its low-lying location, urbanization, and inadequate infrastructure, Jakarta (Indonesia) has experienced an increase in annual flooding events, rising from an average of five significant floods per year in the 1990s to over 20 annually (2010-2020). With climate change exacerbating extreme weather events, Jakarta encounters escalating risks of flooding. Although the recurrent flooding is exacerbated by non-point source (NPS) of pollution such as urban runoff and agricultural discharge that contribute to 40% of total pollutants leading to flood-related issues in Jakarta, none has investigated this research gap.

Ecohydraulics-based environmental flow assessment in two arid North African rivers.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

School of Civil Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

North Africa is among the most water-stressed regions in the world; still, the habitat requirements of its freshwater biota are largely unknown. In this study, (i) we developed habitat suitability curves (HSCs) for freshwater macroinvertebrates in two poorly studied, regulated North African rivers (Ziz and Oum Er-Rbia), and (ii) assessed environmental flows downstream of each river dam by incorporating the HSCs in two-dimensional ecohydraulic models. We demonstrate a low-cost sampling methodology combined with freely distributed ecohydraulic modeling software.
