Dent Clin North Am

October 2024

Board Certified Orofacial Pain, Board Certified Dental Anesthesia, Touro College of Dental Medicine, 858 Bryant Street, Woodmere, NY 11598, USA.

Many psychological factors may have a significant bearing on an individual's oral health and success of dental treatments. Overall, these factors may result in the avoidance of dental visits, emergency-based dental appointments, noncompliant dental behavior, the utilization of multiple oral health care providers, and poor oral health. These factors may affect the quality of life of individuals and may lead to patient dissatisfaction, poor prognosis, and failure of dental treatment.

Aim and background This study aims to determine the stress distribution on the prepared tooth at the margins with shoulder and radial shoulder finish lines when an occlusal load of 300N was applied to ceramic, zirconia, and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) crowns. Materials and methods Six models of mandibular first molar teeth were fabricated. The tooth models were subdivided into two groups with shoulder and radial shoulder margins, respectively (n = 18).

Background The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of frequently used chemical agents in terms of their capacity to eliminate the smear layer after instrumentation, as observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and methods Sixty extracted single-rooted mandibular premolar teeth, each with roots 15 mm in length, were used in this study. The teeth were divided into one control group and four study groups, each containing 12 teeth.

Introduction: The foundation of oncology treatment as a single modality approach as well as the "multimodality" concept has been studied by statistical evaluation pre, during, and posttreatment to rule out their efficacy, expected prognosis, toxicity reactions, and overall survival for the patient. Such studies have also provided an appreciable amount of data for future custom utility. "Targeted therapy" is a cancer treatment that uses drugs but is different from traditional chemotherapy.

Introduction: Squamous cell carcinoma-related antigen is not always sensitive enough for the early detection of oral cancer which is why a new marker has been desired as a substitute to be applied for serum diagnosis of oral cancer. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been known to play an important role in carcinogenesis. Glutathione-s-transferases (GSTs) are a family of eukaryotic and prokaryotic phase-II metabolic isoenzymes involved in xenobiotic detoxification.

Purpose: This paper retrospectively analyses the functional outcomes and complications associated with pre-auricular transparotid approach for the management of mandibular condylar fractures.

Material And Methodology: The retrospective data of 82 condylar fractures were analysing in 73 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation with pre-auricular transparotid approach. Evaluation of post-operative complications and the post-operative occlusion status, maximal inter-incise opening, adequacy of reduction and stability of fixation were assessed clinically and radiographically.

Introduction: Appropriate wound closure with appropriate suture material is of prime significance in surgery. Hence, we aim to assess the efficiency of ISO amyl 2-cyanoacrylate glue in closure of extraoral surgical wound when compared with other suture materials like polypropylene (prolene), nylon (ethilon) and silk (mersilk).

Materials And Methods: We conducted a prospective clinical observational study in which 60 subjects were divided into two groups: suture group and cyanoacrylate group.

Objectives: The objectives of the study include the following: (i) to assess the presence of accessory canals and foramina in the body of the mandible using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), (ii) to evaluate the location, number, diameter, and length of accessory canals in the body of the mandible, and (iii) to propose a new classification for mandibular accessory canals based on the location.

Methods: A total of 50 (25 males and 25 females) CBCT scans were analyzed in three anatomical planes and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions for the exact number, location, diameter, and accessory length canals and accessory foramina in the body of the mandible. The statistical analysis used was an independent -test.

Prog Orthod

April 2019

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, CSMSS Dental College, 68 Builders Society, near Nandanvan Colony, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India.

Background: The use of face mask for early treatment of class III malocclusion has proven to be successful, but its compliance and related dental side effects have always been a problem. To overcome this, a new approach has been suggested. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of reverse twin block with lip pads and fixed rapid maxillary expansion (RTBLP-RME) appliance and face mask with RME (FM-RME) appliance for early treatment of class III malocclusion.

Early treatment of scissor bite has been advocated mainly to prevent function jaw shift that can eventually lead to permanent skeletal asymmetry and temporomandibular joint pathosis. Although unilateral scissor bite is more common, most of the times, bilateral mandibular expansion is indicated. Lingual transforce appliance can be useful in such cases.

Background: The mainstay of periodontal therapy is mechanical removal of subgingival plaque. There is considerable interest in supplementing it with the use of antibiotics and antiseptics. Many drawbacks are associated with these adjunctive pharmacological regimens such as development of resistance to antibiotics and disruption of microflora of the gastrointestinal tract.

Objectives: Over the years, professional dental prophylaxis has involved the use of rubber-cup, bristle brush, and abrasive paste for coronal polishing. Although air polishing is an excellent alternative for removal of tooth stain and dental plaque, very few studies have compared their efficacy in vivo. The present study attempts to evaluate and compare the efficacy of air polishing (test) alone versus rubber-cup polishing (control).

Article Synopsis
  • Dentinal hypersensitivity is a common issue for patients getting crown and bridge restorations, and desensitizing laser treatment has proven effective in addressing this problem.
  • A study involved 48 maxillary first premolars, comparing untreated control specimens to those treated with a specific laser, examining the bond strength of two types of luting cements.
  • Results indicated that self-adhesive resin cements had a slight increase in bond strength when used on laser-treated teeth, suggesting they are preferable for these cases, even though the increase was not statistically significant.
