An inexpensive, effective, and efficient dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) sorbent was developed as an alternative to traditionally used sorbents (primary secondary amine and C18) for fatty matrices using the QuEChERS method. Catalytic chemical vapor deposition grown carbon nanofibers dispersed on activated carbon fibers (Ni-ACF/CNF) having a BET specific surface area of 738 (m/g) were for the first time evaluated as a DSPE material for sample cleanup before gas chromatographic analysis. Based on cleanup performance and recoveries, 10 mg of Ni-ACF/CNF was found optimal for the determination of twenty-seven multi-class pesticides in high fat and low water commodities/matrices (peanut, soybean, sesame, and flaxseed).

Epidemiological evidences have shown an association of exposure to pesticides or heavy metals with increased incidences of Parkinson's disease (PD) in humans. Mitochondria play a primary role in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), and small molecules that counteract the initial stages of disease may offer therapeutic benefit. In this regard, we have examined whether the off-target effects of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved anti-helminth drug nitazoxanide (NTZ) on mitochondrial respiration could possess any therapeutic potential for PD. Results indicate that MPP-induced loss in oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and ATP production by mitochondria were ameliorated by NTZ in real time by virtue of its mild uncoupling effect.

Defective autophagy has been linked to lipotoxicity in several cellular models. We aimed to investigate autophagy in lipid-stimulated hepatoma (Huh7) cells and tested whether 4-phenyl butyric acid (4-PBA), a chemical chaperone, has a beneficial role in hepatic fat accumulation and lipotoxicity.
