The Siddha system of medicine (SSM) is the oldest medical science practised in the ancient period of the southern part of India and Sri Lanka. Many formulations were described for wound healing in the SSM, with specific diagnostic differentiation in the Siddha literature. Most preparations for wound healing were available in the form of oil-based formulations, especially for external usage.

The consumption of animal products has witnessed a significant increase over the years, leading to a growing need for industries to adopt strict waste control measures to mitigate environmental impacts. The disposal of animal waste in landfill can result in diverse and potentially hazardous decomposition by-products. Animal by-products, derived from meat, poultry, seafood and fish industries, offer a substantial raw material source for collagen and gelatin production due to their high protein content.

The bone marrow overproduces immature cells in the malignancy known as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In the United States, about 6500 occurrences of ALL are diagnosed each year in both children and adults, comprising nearly 25% of pediatric cancer cases. Recently, many computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) systems have been proposed to aid hematologists in reducing workload, providing correct results, and managing enormous volumes of data.

The newly synthesized chiral active [5]helicene-like tetrabenzofluorene (TBF) based highly red-emitting molecules exhibit flower-like self-assembly. These molecules display photophysical and structural properties such as intramolecular charge transfer, dual state emission, large fluorescence quantum yield, and solvatochromism. In TBFID, the indandione functional group attached on both sides as the terminal group offers an A-D-A push-pull effect and acts as a strong acceptor to cause more redshift in solution as well as in solid state as compared to TBFPA (TBF with benzaldehyde functional group in terminal position).

Chromium contamination from abandoned industrial sites and inadequately managed waste disposal areas poses substantial environmental threat. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has shown promising, eco-friendly solution to remediate Cr(VI) and divalent heavy metals. In this study, MICP was carried out for chromium immobilization by an ureolytic bacterium Arthrobacter creatinolyticus which is capable of reducing Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) via extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production.

Chitosan dialdehyde (ChDA) was prepared from a three-step process initiated by thermal organic acid hydrolysis, periodate oxidization, and precipitation from native chitosan (NCh). The developed ChDA resulted in an aldehydic content of about 82 % with increased solubility (89 %) and maximum yield (97 %). The functional alteration of the aldehydic (-CHO) group in ChDA was established using vibrational stretching at 1744 cm.

The textile industry uses sodium chloride and sodium sulphate during the dyeing process to improve the fixation of dyes on fabrics. After wastewater treatment, the reject stream is dried resulting in mixed salts as solid wastes that are not reused. The leather industry also uses a vast quantity of salt for temporary preservation of skins/hides and as swelling-suppressing agent during the pickling (acidification) process.

Bayesian Optimization for Efficient Prediction of Gas Uptake in Nanoporous Materials.

Chemphyschem

August 2024

Advanced Materials Laboratory, CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute, Sardar Patel Road, Adyar, Chennai, 600020, India.

The discovery and optimization of novel nanoporous materials (NPMs) such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are crucial for addressing global challenges like climate change, energy security, and environmental degradation. Traditional experimental approaches for optimizing these materials are time-consuming and resource-intensive. This research paper presents a strategy using Bayesian optimization (BO) to efficiently navigate the complex design spaces of NPMs for gas storage applications.

The development of small-molecule organic solar cells with the required efficiency depends on the information obtained from molecular-level studies. In this context, 39 small-molecule donors featuring isoindigo as an acceptor moiety have been meticulously crafted for potential applications in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. These molecules follow the D-A-D-A-D and D-A-π-D-π-A-D framework.

A simple single step one pot multicomponent reaction was performed to synthesize N-(tert-butyl)-2-(furan-2-yl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-3-amine (TBFIPA). The synthesized TBFIPA was subjected to library of cations to study its ability for selective and sensitive detection of specific metal ions. Selective detection of chromium ions by TBFIPA were found from the significant hypsochromic shift (335 nm → 285 nm) in the UV-Visible spectra.

The molecular dynamics study of thermotropic mesogens exhibiting the crystal phases is valuable in unraveling the complex global (collective) and local (noncollective) motions executed by liquid crystal molecules, which would further advance the existing knowledge on orientationally disordered crystalline (ODIC) phases. Toward the fulfillment of such a task, a combined nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry approach employing the fast field cycling (FFC) NMR (10 kHz-30 MHz) and high-field pulsed NMR (400 MHz) techniques is utilized to sample the broad frequency range offered by molecular motions in the crystal phase of 4-(trans-4'--hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT). The validity of the observed relaxation data is tested and interpreted by the Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound (BPP) model involving the superposition of four mutually independent Lorentzian spectral densities, reflecting molecular dynamical processes on different time scales.

Developing novel antimicrobial wound dressings that have the potential to address the challenges associated with chronic wounds is highly imperative in providing effective infection control and wound healing support. Biocompatible electrospun nanofibers with their high porosity and surface area enabling efficient drug loading and delivery have been investigated in this regard as viable candidates for chronic wound care. Here, we design Casein/Polyvinyl alcohol (CAN/PVA) nanofibers reinforced with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by the electrospinning technique to develop diabetic wound healing scaffolds.

Developing efficient catalysts for ammonia synthesis is increasingly crucial but remains a formidable challenge due to the lack of robust design criteria, particularly in addressing the activity and selectivity issues, especially in electrochemical nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR). In this study, we systematically investigated the catalytic potential of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) embedded with non-metal (C, Si, P and S) atoms as an electrocatalyst for the nitrogen reduction reaction using density functional theory (DFT) computations. The preference for non-metal-doped BN nanomaterials stems from their ability to suppress hydrogen evolution and their environmentally friendly nature, in contrast to transition metals.

An efficient approach for the synthesis of chiral pyrrolo[1,2-][1,4]thiazine-2-carbaldehydes is achieved via formal 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition/rearrangement reactions of benzothiazolium salt and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, utilizing an asymmetric organocatalyst. This process results in the formation of fluorescent, highly enantioenriched chiral molecules with three contiguous stereogenic centers, one of which is a chiral quaternary center, with excellent yields and enantio- and diastereoselectivity. A computational study demonstrated the understanding of the reaction mechanism.
