Cucurbitane-type triterpenoids are a major class of bioactive compounds present in bitter melon. In the present study, six different cultivars of bitter melon were extracted by using microwave- or ultrasound-assisted techniques to identify the prominent method that can extract the majority of cucurbitane-type triterpenoids. A UHPLC-MS/MS (ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry) system was used for the identification and quantification of ten cucurbitane-type triterpenoids.

Demand for healthy, safe, and high-quality foods and disadvantages of thermal processing methods such as quality losses supported the improvement of the novel, affordable, and quick nonthermal food preservation techniques such as UV light. UV-C light (200-280 nm) radiation is an emerging technology for the disinfection of pathogen microorganisms, increasing the shelf life of foods, and used for pasteurization, surface sterilization, cleaning of equipment and water, and so on. Sensory perceptions of foods are effective on the consumer choice, acceptability, and consumption of foods.

The design and development of scalable, efficient photothermal evaporator systems that reduce microplastic pollution are highly desirable. Herein, a sustainable bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)-based self-floating bilayer photothermal foam (PTF) is designed that eases the effective confinement of solar light for efficient freshwater production via interfacial heating. The sandwich nanoarchitectured porous bilayer solar evaporator consists of a top solar-harvesting blackbody layer composed of broad-spectrum active black titania (BT) nanoparticles embedded in the BNC matrix and a thick bottom layer of pristine BNC for agile thermal management, the efficient wicking of bulk water, and staying afloat.

Olive pomace oil (OPO), a by-product of olive oil industry, is directly consumed after refining. The novelty of this study consists of the direct use of crude high acidic OPO (3.4-20% acidity) to produce added-value compounds, using sn-1,3-regioselective lipases: (i) low-calorie dietetic structured lipids (SL) containing caprylic (C8:0) or capric (C10:0) acids by acidolysis or interesterification with their ethyl esters, (ii) fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) for biodiesel, and (iii) sn-2 monoacylglycerols (emulsifiers), as by-product of FAME production by methanolysis.

Huge quantities of byproducts/wastes generated in onion processing are usually discarded, but they are excellent sources of bioactive compounds and phytochemicals. However, with growing interest in the sustainable use of resources and the circular economy to reduce adverse impacts on the environment, food processing wastes such as onion peel/skin can be extracted and employed as inputs in developing or reformulating nutrient supplements, and pharmacological drugs. This review highlights major bioactive components, especially total phenolics, total flavonoid, quercetin and its derivatives present in onion peel/skin and their therapeutic applications as cardioprotective, neuroprotective, antiobesity, antidiabetic, anticancer and antimicrobial agents.

Xylose, the most abundant pentose sugar of the hemicellulosic fraction of lignocellulosic biomass, has to be utilized rationally for the commercial viability of biorefineries. An effective pre-treatment strategy for the release of xylose from the biomass and an appropriate microbe of the status of an Industrial strain for the utilization of this pentose sugar are key challenges which need special attention for the economic success of the biomass value addition to chemicals. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and associated signaling pathways are involved in diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) however, detailed studies are not available. The present study investigated the role of ER stress and related pathways such as ER-phagy, apoptosis and their underlying mechanisms using appropriate models. Development of selective, ultra-sensitive, rapid and facile methods for the detection of chemical residues of toxic pesticides and hazardous chemicals are quite important in food safety, environmental monitoring and safeguarding public health. Herein, we presented a fluorescent turn-on aptasensor based on sulphur-doped graphene quantum dot (S-GQD) utilizing specific recognition and binding property of aptamer for the ultra-sensitive and selective detection of omethoate (OM) which is a systemic organophosphorus pesticide. The detection method is based on tuning aggregation-disaggregation mechanism of S-GQD by way of conformational alteration of the recognition probe.

This review summarizes the use of spectroscopic processes-based analytical tools coupled with chemometric techniques for the identification of adulterants in edible oil. Investigational approaches of process analytical tools such asspectroscopy techniques, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), hyperspectral imaging (HSI), e-tongue and e-nose combined with chemometrics were used to monitor quality of edible oils. Owing to the variety and intricacy of edible oil properties along with the alterations in attributes of the PAT tools, the reliability of the tool used and the operating factors are the crucial components which require attention to enhance the efficiency in identification of adulterants.

The bacterial cell wall contains numerous surface-exposed proteins, which are covalently anchored and assembled by a sortase family of transpeptidase enzymes. The sortase are cysteine transpeptidases that catalyzes the covalent attachment of surface protein to the cell wall peptidoglycan. Among the reported six classes of sortases, each distinct class of sortase plays a unique biological role in anchoring a variety of surface proteins to the peptidoglycan of both pathogenic and non-pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria.
