Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) obtained from lignocellulosic biomass after autohydrolysis primarily consist of lignin-derived impurities and autogenerated inhibitors like furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, and acetic acid. In this study, graphene oxide-mediated purification (GOMP), a novel and environmentally friendly downstream processing method, was developed for the purification of XOS from hydrolysate obtained after ozone-assisted autohydrolysis of wheat bran. GOMP resulted in appreciable recovery of total XOS from the hydrolysate (73.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defences leading to neurological and other chronic disorders. The interaction between food and gut microbiota and their metabolites significantly reduces oxidative stress and influences host physiology and metabolism. This process mainly involves enzymes that hydrolyse complex polysaccharides and produce metabolites.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2024

Plant Cell Biotechnology Department, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru 570020, India; Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Ghaziabad 201002, India. Electronic address:

The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological and biochemical effects of Chitosan nanoparticles on Capsicum annuum plants. The particle size, polydispersity index, composition, and structure of the synthesized chitosan-based nanoparticles (Chitosan (CS), Chitosan-Silver (CSAg), and Chitosan-Copper (CSCu) NPs) were determined by analyzing the zeta potential, FTIR, TEM, and XRD. The seedlings showed improved physiological and biochemical characteristics when 1, 10, and 20 ppm concentrations of nanoparticles (CS, CSAg, and CSCu) were used for 24-h seed priming.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in essential nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants; however, they have short shelf life. Freezing is a superior method of preservation compared to other techniques with respect to nutrient retention and maintenance of sensory attributes. However, several physical and textural quality changes associated with freezing and thawing pose a serious problem to the quality of frozen products.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a major concern for women worldwide due to increased risk of fractures and diminished bone quality. Recent research on gut microbiota has suggested that probiotics can combat various diseases, including postmenopausal bone loss. Although several preclinical studies have explored the potential of probiotics in improving postmenopausal bone loss, the results have been inconsistent and the mechanism of action remains unclear.

Insights into the structure and Ion transport of pectin-[BMIM][PF6] electrolytes.

J Chem Phys

October 2023

Polymer Electrolytes and Materials Group (PEMG), Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, Karwar, Rajasthan 342037, India.

We investigate the effect of pectin on the structure and ion transport properties of the room-temperature ionic liquid electrolyte 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]) using molecular dynamics simulations. We find that pectin induces intriguing structural changes in the electrolyte that disrupt large ionic aggregates and promote the formation of smaller ionic clusters, which is a promising finding for ionic conductivity. Due to pectin in [BMIM][PF6] electrolytes, the diffusion coefficient of cations and anions is observed to decrease by a factor of four for a loading of 25 wt.

Plantation Products, Spices and Flavour Technology Department, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru, Karnataka, India; Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Ghaziabad 201002, India. Electronic address:

Coffee oligosaccharides (COS) are novel sources of prebiotics comprising manno-oligosaccharides, galacto-oligosaccharides, arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides, and cello-oligosaccharides. These oligosaccharides function as prebiotics, antioxidant-dietary fiber owing to important physicochemical and physiological properties, adjuvants, pharma, nutraceutical food, gut health, immune system boosting, cancer treatment, and many more. Research suggests COS performs prebiotic action, as it enhances gut health by promoting beneficial bacteria in the colon and releasing functional metabolites such as SCFAs.

Purpose Of The Review: Ferulic acid (FA), which occurs naturally as the feruloylated sugar ester in grains, fruits, and vegetables, is critical for combating oxidative stress and alleviating neurodegenerative diseases resulting from free radical-generated protein aggregates in brain cells. However, FA cannot be absorbed in conjugated form. Therefore, strategies to improve the bioavailability of FA are gaining more importance.

The emerging role of the gut microbiome in cancer cell plasticity and therapeutic resistance.

Cancer Metastasis Rev

March 2024

Laboratory of Nutritional Epigenetics, Department of Biochemistry, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, 570020, India.

Resistance to therapeutic agents is one of the major challenges in cancer therapy. Generally, the focus is given to the genetic driver, especially the genetic mutation behind the therapeutic resistance. However, non-mutational mechanisms, such as epigenetic modifications, and TME alteration, which is mainly driven by cancer cell plasticity, are also involved in therapeutic resistance.
