Reference genomes serve as a baseline criterion for comparison of personal genomes to deduce clinical variants. The widely used reference genome, GRCh38, contains stretches of gaps and unresolved bases particularly in complex regions which could obscure variant discovery. In contrast, the gapless telomere-to-telomere CHM13 (T2T-CHM13) reference genome can be used to assess difficult regions of the genome.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the cellular translation system maintains homochirality (preference for L-amino acids) in proteins, emphasizing the role of enzymes like alanyl-tRNA synthetase (AlaRS).
  • It challenges previous models by demonstrating that AlaRS does not activate D-alanine and that its editing domain mainly corrects errors for other amino acids, not D-alanine.
  • The research provides biochemical evidence for chiral specificity, reinforcing that the recognition mechanisms ensure accurate protein synthesis and uphold the L-chiral bias in amino acids.

The genesis and functioning of the central nervous system are one of the most intricate and intriguing aspects of embryogenesis. The big lacuna in the field of human CNS development is the lack of accessibility of the human brain for direct observation during embryonic and fetal development. Thus, it is imperative to establish alternative animal models to gain deep mechanistic insights into neurodevelopment, establishment of neural circuitry, and its function.

Mother and Child Health, Interactive Research School for Health Affairs (IRSHA), Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be) University, Pune 411043, India. Electronic address:

Introduction: Biosynthesis of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids requires sequential activities of desaturases and elongases for conversion of fatty acid precursors to products. The delta-6 desaturase enzyme, encoded by FADS2 gene, is a rate limiting enzyme in this pathway. Alterations in D6D enzyme activity can lead to altered fatty acid profiles.
