Rapid and reagent-free detection of progesterone (P4) is crucial in point-of-care (POC) measurement due to its important role in the human endocrine and central nervous system. Currently available technologies for P4 detection are often not rapid or require reagents, limiting their use in POC settings. In this work, a self-signaling electrochemical sensing platform for rapid detection of P4 is developed by using electroactive molecularly imprinted polymers (E-MIPs).

Early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and hyperprolactinemia based on electrochemical dopamine (DA) sensing appears as an efficient and promising practical diagnostic method. However, the coexistence of DA in real samples with ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA), which oxidize at potentials close to its own, prevents the accurate electrochemical DA sensing and therefore, hinders the effective diagnosis of these diseases. In this work, we successfully combined the electrostatic proprieties of GO, the electron transfer properties of an AuNPs@MWCNTs nanocomposite and the ability of thiol group of the amino acid l-cysteine to react chemically with carbonyl groups of UA, to develop a novel approach that enabled complete suppression of interference from AA and UA and hence, accurate DA electroanalysis in the conditions close to those of human blood serum.

Metal-free cost-efficient biocompatible molecules are beneficial for opto-electrochemical bioassays. Herein, chitosan (CS) conjugated butein is prepared via graft polymerization. Structural integrity between radical active sites of CS and its probable conjugation routes with reactive OH group of butein during grafting were comprehensively studied using optical absorbance/emission property, NMR, FT-IR and XPS analysis.

The development of biofilms by microorganisms is conventionally attributed to microbially induced corrosion on stainless steel surfaces and leads to severe consequences in industrial and environmental settings. Since bacterial biofilm formation is regulated by the signal mediated quorum sensing (QS) system, targeting biofilms through QS inhibitors will possibly control biologically induced corrosion on the metal surface. In this study, biofilm formation on 316L stainless steel (SS 316L) immersed in a natural pond water system was effectively inhibited in the presence of the QS inhibitor methyl eugenol, as evidenced through epifluorescence microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses.

We present a facile strategy for highly sensitive and selective determination of copper(II) ions and vitamin C (ascorbic acid, AA) using new amino-terminated nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) synthesized from melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source by the hydrothermal method. The CQDs have superior optical features, including a pH-sensitive photoinduced electron transfer process. The CQDs form a complex with Cu ions, leading to the development of naked-eye, colorimetric, and fluorometric determination.

For the first time, highly porous and hierarchical carbon with high surface area (∼2430 m g) has been prepared from waste amla fruits at different carbonization temperatures viz., 700 °C, 800 °C and 900 °C by a simple and eco-friendly method for the simultaneous electrochemical sensing of biologically important compounds such as ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and nitrite. The porous carbon materials synthesized at 700 °C, 800 °C and 900 °C are denoted as ABC-700, ABC-800 and ABC-900, respectively.
