The coordinated spatial arrangement of organelles within a tissue plane, known as planar cell polarity (PCP), is critical for organ development and function. Gradients of morphogens and their receptors typically set-up PCP, but whether non-molecular cues, akin to phototropism in plants, also play a part remains unknown. Here, we report that basal bodies of newborn photoreceptor cells in the mouse retina are positioned centrally on the apical surface but then move laterally during the first postnatal week, generating cell-intrinsic asymmetry in the retinal plane.

Humans can easily extract the rhythm of a complex sound, like music, and move to its regular beat, like in dance. These abilities are modulated by musical training and vary significantly in untrained individuals. The causes of this variability are multidimensional and typically hard to grasp in single tasks.

The enthalpy and entropy of micellization in water, Δ and Δ, respectively, of three linear amphiphilic BAB block copolymers consisting of either poly(methyl acrylate) ( ∼ 1200 and 700 Da) or poly(ethyl acrylate) ( ∼ 800 Da) as hydrophobic (B) segments and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the hydrophilic (A, ∼ 3000 Da) segment were determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The Δ and Δ of the cyclic AB block copolymers obtained by cyclization of the linear triblock copolymers were determined under the same conditions. The Δ value of the cyclic copolymers was smaller than that of their linear precursors.

A large variety of pairwise measures of similarity or dissimilarity have been developed for comparing phylogenetic trees, for example, species trees or gene trees. Due to its intuitive definition in terms of tree clades and bipartitions and its computational efficiency, the Robinson-Foulds (RF) distance is the most widely used for trees with unweighted edges and labels restricted to leaves (representing the genetic elements being compared). However, in the case of gene trees, an important information revealing the nature of the homologous relation between gene pairs (orthologs, paralogs, and xenologs) is the type of event associated to each internal node of the tree, typically speciations or duplications, but other types of events may also be considered, such as horizontal gene transfers.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with high prevalence. IBS, in particular the diarrheic subtype, is associated with alterations in gut microbiota composition and functionality, called dysbiosis. However, the treatment of this disease mainly relies on the patient's symptoms without considering the gut microbiota perturbations.

We present the development of surfactant-free, silica-free and fully biobased oil-in-water antimicrobial Pickering emulsions, based on the self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin and phytoantimicrobial oils (terpinen-4-ol or carvacrol). Undecylenic acid (UA), derived from castor oil, can be used as bio-based drug to treat fungal infection, but is less effective than petroleum-based drugs as azole derivatives. To maximize its antifungal potential, we have incorporated UA in fully biobased Pickering emulsions.

High-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (HS-DSC) thermograms of aqueous poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) solutions present a sharp unimodal endotherm that signals the heat-induced dehydration/collapse of the PNIPAM chain. Similarly, α,ω-di-octadecyl-PNIPAM (C18-PN-C18) aqueous solutions exhibit a unimodal endotherm. In contrast, aqueous solutions of α,ω-hydrophobically modified PNIPAMs with polycyclic terminal groups, such as pyrenylbutyl (Py-PN-Py), adamantylethyl (Ad-PN-Ad), and azopyridine- (C12-PN-AzPy) moieties, exhibit bimodal thermograms.

The cortical visual hierarchy communicates in different oscillatory ranges. While gamma waves influence the feedforward processing, alpha oscillations travel in the feedback direction. Little is known how this oscillatory cortical communication depends on an alternative route that involves the pulvinar nucleus of the thalamus.

We present self-assembled Pickering emulsions containing biocidal phytochemical oils (carvacrol and terpinen-4-ol) and β-cyclodextrin able to potentiate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of miconazoctylium bromide. The carvacrol-containing emulsion is 2-fold more sensitive against and and highly active against , compared to the commercial cream containing miconazole nitrate. Moreover, this emulsion shows a synergistic effect against fungi, additive responses against bacteria, and remarkable staphylococcal biofilm eradication.

Identifying adaptive loci is important to understand the evolutionary potential of species undergoing range expansion. However, in expanding populations, spatial demographic processes such as allele surfing can create spatial patterns of neutral genetic variation that appear similar to those generated through adaptive processes. As a result, the false discovery rate of adaptive loci may be inflated in landscape genomic analyses.

In the cortex, demarcated unimodal sensory regions often respond to unforeseen sensory stimuli and exhibit plasticity. The goal of the current investigation was to test evoked responses of primary visual cortex (V1) neurons when an adapting auditory stimulus is applied in isolation. Using extracellular recordings in anesthetized cats, we demonstrate that, unlike the prevailing observation of only slight modulations in the firing rates of the neurons, sound imposition in isolation entirely shifted the peaks of orientation tuning curves of neurons in both supra- and infragranular layers of V1.

The adsorption of hydrophilic or amphiphilic multiblock copolymers provides a powerful means to produce well-defined "smart" surfaces, especially if one or several blocks are sensitive to external stimuli. We focus here on an A-B-A-B-A copolymer, where A is a cationic poly((3-acrylamido-propyl)-trimethylammonium chloride) (PAMPTMA) block containing 15 (end blocks) or 30 (middle block) repeat units and B is a neutral thermosensitive water-soluble poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOZ) block with 50 repeat units. X-ray reflectivity and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring were employed to study the adsorption of PAMPTMA-PIPOZ-PAMPTMA-PIPOZ-PAMPTMA on silica surfaces.

Polymersomes are attractive nanocarriers for hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs; they are more stable than liposomes, tunable, and relatively easy to prepare. The copolymer composition and molar mass are critical features that determine the physicochemical properties of the polymersomes including the rate of drug release. We used the triblock-copolymer, poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)--poly-(dimethysiloxane)--poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMOXA-PDMS-PMOXA), to form amphipathic polymersomes capable of loading proteins and small hydrophobic agents.

Caged luciferin compounds of firefly luciferins have recently drawn much attention since firefly bioluminescence, in which D-luciferin acts as a substrate, is widely used in noninvasive gene-expression imaging, studies of in vivo cell trafficking, and the detection of enzyme activity. The objectives of this study are the development of new caged luciferins and the quantitative determination of the photophysical parameters of their photo-decomposition. We synthesized 7-(diethylaminocoumarin)-4-(yl)methyl caged D-luciferin (DEACM-caged D-luciferin) and quantitatively characterized its absorption spectrum, bioluminescence, and photoproducts using chiral HPLC chromatography, as a function of light-irradiation time.

Controlling the propagation of primary tumors is fundamental to avoiding the epithelial to mesenchymal transition process leading to the dissemination and seeding of tumor cells throughout the body. Here we demonstrate that nanoparticles (NPs) limit the propagation of cell aggregates of CT26 murine carcinoma cells used as tumor models. The spreading behavior of these aggregates incubated with NPs is studied on fibronectin-coated substrates.

We study the spreading of cell aggregates deposited on adhesive substrates decorated with microparticles (MPs). A cell monolayer expands around the aggregate. The cells on the periphery of the monolayer take up the MPs, clearing the substrate as they progress and forming an aureole of cells filled with MPs.

Optical imaging of retinal intrinsic signals is a relatively new method that provides spatiotemporal patterns of retinal activity through activity-dependent changes in light reflectance of the retina. The exact physiological mechanisms at the origin of retinal intrinsic signals are poorly understood and there are significant inter-species differences in their characteristics and cellular origins. In this study, we re-examined this issue through pharmacological dissection of retinal intrinsic signals in the rabbit with simultaneous ERG recordings.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution and incidence of two forms of alveolar bone resorption known as fenestration and dehiscence across time and space. To accomplish this a Medieval French population was studied and the results were compared with other studies to examine incidence and distribution of alveolar bone resorption. Thus, 1175 teeth were analysed for 81 individuals, from an agropastoral Medieval (12th-14th century) archaeological site of Vilarnau located in the South of France.

The attentional blink (AB) is a difficulty in correctly processing a target when it follows one or more other targets after a short delay. When no backward mask is presented after the last critical target, there is no or little behavioral AB deficit. The mask plays an important role in limiting conscious access to target information.
