Electronic address:

Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) is well known to play paradoxical roles in tumorigenesis as it has both growth-inhibitory and pro-metastatic effects. However, the underlying mechanisms of how TGF-β drives the opposing responses remain largely unknown. Here, we report that ERBB4, a member of the ERBB receptor tyrosine kinase family, specifically promotes TGF-β's metastatic response but not its anti-growth response.

More than a century of research shows that spaced learning improves long-term memory. However, there remains debate concerning why that is. A major limitation to resolving theoretical debates is the lack of evidence for how neural representations change as a function of spacing.

Role of NLRP3 Inflammasome in Chronic Pain and Alzheimer's Disease-A Review.

J Biochem Mol Toxicol

February 2025

Department of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Hubei University of Medicine, Shiyan, People's Republic of China.

The coexistence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and chronic pain (CP) in the elderly population has been extensively documented, and a growing body of evidence supports the potential interconnections between these two conditions. This comprehensive review explores the mechanisms by which CP may contribute to the development and progression of AD, with a particular focus on neuroinflammatory pathways and the role of microglia, as well as the activation of the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. The review proposes that prolonged pain processing in critical brain regions can dysregulate the activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome within microglia, leading to the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and excessive oxidative stress in these regions.

Chagas disease is a chronic infection caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, with limited benefits of the currently available anti-parasitic chemotherapeutic approaches to halt the progression of heart disease. Recombinant TSA-1-C4 and Tc24-C4 proteins have been developed as promising antigen candidates for therapeutic vaccines, leading to propose them in combination as a bivalent recombinant protein strategy. In this study, we evaluated the immunomodulatory effect of the combined TSA-1-C4 and Tc24-C4 recombinant proteins by in vitro assays using murine macrophages.

Purpose: Bats constitute 20% of all mammal species, playing a vital role in ecosystem health as pollinators, seed dispersers, and regulators of insect populations. However, these animals can also be reservoirs for infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria, and enteroparasites such as Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Balantioides coli, raising questions about their role in the epidemiology of these agents.

January 2025

Department of Biotechnology, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, Av. Ferrocarril San Rafael Atlixco 186, Col. Leyes de Reforma 1A Sección, Iztapalapa, CDMX, Mexico City, Mexico.

The relationship of microbial community and cometabolic consumption of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) in a nitrifying sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was studied. The assessment of the population dynamics of the nitrifying sludge during the cometabolic 2-CP consumption with increasing ammonium (NH) concentrations in the SBR showed the presence of 39 different species of which 10 were always present in all cycles. Fifty-five percent of the species found were grouped as Proteobacteria (45% as β-proteobacteria and 10% as γ-proteobacteria class), 30% as Acidobacteria, and 15% as Deinococcus-Thermus phyla.

The current study investigated the in vitro degradability, in vitro gas production, methane (CH) production, and ruminal bacterial community of kenaf plants cut at different heights (130, 160, 190, 220, and 250 cm). These samples were subjected to an in vitro batch culture system using buffalo rumen fluid to measure gas and CH production at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h of incubation. Results reveal that crude protein (CP) concentration was the highest at the 220 cm height compared with the other heights.

Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), UMR 241-SECOPOL (IFREMER, ILM, IRD, UPF), P.O. Box 6570, 98702 Faa'a, Tahiti, French Polynesia.

Ciguatera poisoning (CP) is caused by the consumption of marine products contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs) produced by dinoflagellates of the genus . Analytical methods for CTXs, involving the extraction/purification of trace quantities of CTXs from complex matrices, are numerous in the literature. However, little information on their effectiveness for nonpolar CTXs is available, yet these congeners, contributing to the risk of CP, are required for the establishment of effective food safety monitoring programs.

Membranes (Basel)

January 2025

Departamento de Ciencias del Agua y Medio Ambiente, Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora, 5 de Febrero 818 sur Col. Centro, Cd. Obregón C.P. 85000, Sonora, Mexico.

Technical and economic criteria were used to evaluate the feasibility of the treatment of an industrial effluent (10 m/h) for water recovery and reuse. The treatment evaluation included the following: (1) effluent characteristic determination; (2) selection and evaluation of the effluent treatment at lab scale, establishing operating conditions and process efficiency; (3) scaling up the treatment process to the industrial level; (4) treatment plant design and commercial availability analysis of the required equipment; and (5) the costs of the inversion and operation of the plant treatment, cost/m for water recovery, and time of investment recovery. The physicochemical characteristics of the effluent exposed the polluted wastewater with sodium chloride salts and colourants, predominating a mixture of tartrazine, Red 40, and brilliant blue from the synthesis of food additives.
