Combination therapy with anti-angiogenic drugs and immune checkpoint inhibitors has shown enhanced clinical activity and has been approved for the treatment of multiple tumor types. Despite extensive research, predictive biomarkers for combination therapy remain poorly understood. Microvessel density (MVD), a surrogate marker for aberrant angiogenesis measured by immunohistochemistry (IHC), has been associated with response to monotherapy with anti-angiogenesis inhibitors.

Topographic Analysis of the Periorbital Region Including Orbicularis Oculi Muscle Based on Ultrasonography Interpretation.

J Cosmet Dermatol

January 2025

Division in Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Department of Oral Biology, Human Identification Research Institute, BK21 FOUR Project, Yonsei University College of Dentistry, Seoul, South Korea.

Objective: Ultrasonographic examination is easy, fast, safe, and used in various fields; however, its application to the facial area has been limited. Complex anatomical structures are mixed within thin, soft tissues in the facial region; therefore, understanding their structural characteristics is crucial. This study aimed to use ultrasonography to obtain information on the layered structure and soft tissue thickness of the eye area around the orbicularis oculi muscle and provide guidance for clinical practice.

Objective: A pathogenetic role of CD8+ T lymphocytes in radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) and other spondyloarthritis (SpA) is sustained by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and by the expansion of public T cell clonotypes in the target tissues. This study investigates the migration of CD8+ T cells, along with their phenotype and functions in patients with r-axSpA and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

Methods: Peripheral blood CD8+ and CD4+ T cells were isolated from r-axSpA (n= 128), PsA (n= 60) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA, n= 74) patients and healthy donors (HD, n= 79).

Converting Fe-N-C single-atom catalyst to a new FeNxSey cluster catalyst for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Tianjin University, School of Materials science and engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, 300072, Tianjin, CHINA.

Fe-N-C catalyst is the most promising alternative to platinum catalyst for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), however its high performance cannot be maintained for a long enough time in device. The construction of a new Fe coordination environment that is different from the square-planar Fe-N 4 configuration in Fe-N-C catalyst is expected to break current stability limits, which however remains unexplored. Here, we report the conversion of Fe-N-C to a new FeNxSey catalyst, where the Fe sites are three-dimensionally (3D) co-coordinated by N and Se atoms.

CD44/Integrin β1 Association Drives Fast Motility on Hyaluronic Acid Substrates.

J Cell Physiol

January 2025

Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering, IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India.

In addition to proteins such as collagen (Col) and fibronectin, the extracellular matrix (ECM) is enriched with bulky proteoglycan molecules such as hyaluronic acid (HA). However, how ECM proteins and proteoglycans collectively regulate cellular processes has not been adequately explored. Here, we address this question by studying cytoskeletal and focal adhesion organization and dynamics on cells cultured on polyacrylamide hydrogels functionalized with Col, HA and a combination of Col and HA (Col/HA).

The SiO electrode interface is passivated with a SiO layer, which hinders the deposition of an inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) due to its high surface work function and low exchange current density of electrolyte decomposition. Consequently, a thermally vulnerable, organic-based SEI formed on the SiO electrode, leading to poor cycling performance at elevated temperatures. To address this issue, the SEI formation process is thermoelectrochemically activated.

Mandibular Reconstruction With a Patient-Specific Implant Following Surgical Excision of an Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma in a Dog.

J Vet Dent

January 2025

Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery, Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, Part of Linnaeus Group, Swindon, UK.

Canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma (CAA) is an invasive benign epithelial odontogenic tumour most commonly affecting the mandible of large breed dogs. To the author's knowledge, this report describes the first computer-aided design patient-specific implant (PSI) that has been placed for a critical sized bone defect in mandibular reconstruction of a dog in the UK. The aim was to restore mandibular stability using a regenerative approach combining a titanium locking plate and compression-resistant matrix infused with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) to bridge the 85 mm mandibular defect created by a segmental mandibulectomy.

Aims: Crovalimab is a novel C5 inhibitor administered first intravenously and then subcutaneously in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) naive to complement inhibition or switching from eculizumab or ravulizumab. Crovalimab showed efficacy and safety comparable to eculizumab in the pivotal COMMODORE 2 and supporting studies.

Methods: We characterized crovalimab pharmacokinetics and the relationship between exposure pharmacokinetic parameters and pharmacodynamic biomarkers, efficacy and safety endpoints using pooled data (healthy volunteers [n = 9], naive [n = 210] and switched [n = 211] patients).

Purpose: To determine whether preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can reliably determine intraoperative measurements in the Vertiflex Interspinous Spacer (ISS) procedure.

Methods: Patients who underwent Vertiflex ISS with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS) and a preoperative MRI available in picture archiving and communication system (PACS) between January 2013 to February 2023 were identified retrospectively from the University of Chicago Medical Center Database. An experienced board-certified pain specialist and well-trained 2nd-year medical student independently performed measurements of the interspinous space where Vertiflex ISSs of various sizes are inserted.

Background/objectives: Congenital melanocytic naevi (CMN) are a risk factor for melanoma. Melanoma risk is dependent on the congenital phenotype. Our primary aims were to assess the clinical characteristics of CMN that indicate a high risk of neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) and melanoma in an Australian paediatric population group; to identify patient characteristics and clinical features of CMN that trigger further investigations; and to determine the rate of malignancy and other complications for CMN.

Enhancing CO oxidation performance by controlling the interconnected pore structure in porous three-way catalyst particles.

Nanoscale

January 2025

Chemical Engineering Program, Department of Advanced Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Hiroshima University, 1-4-1 Kagamiyama, Higashi Hiroshima, Hiroshima 739-8527, Japan.

Highly ordered porous structured particles comprising three-way catalyst (TWC) nanoparticles have attracted attention because of their remarkable catalytic performance. However, the conditions for controlling their pore arrangement to form interconnected pore structures remain unclear. In particular, the correlation between framework thickness (distance between pores) or macroporosity and the diffusion of gaseous reactants to achieve a high catalytic performance has not been extensively discussed.

Background: Taiwan implemented global hospital budgeting with a floating-point value, which created a prisoner's dilemma. As a result, hospitals increased service volume, which caused the floating-point value to drop to less than one New Taiwan Dollar (NTD). The recent increase in the number of hospital beds and the call to enhance the floating-point value to one NTD raise concerns about the potential for increased financial burden without adding value to patient care if hospitals expand their bed capacity for volume-based competition.
