Hemoglobin (Hb) measurement is a fundamental biological test, especially in emergency situations where rapid medical decisions are required. Portable hemoglobinometers, such as HemoCue®, provide a delocalized solution for capillary whole blood. The SFBC's POCT News and Issues working group designed and conducted two national surveys to assess the use and management of these devices, both on the clinical and biological side, with 306 and 160 responses respectively.

Despite their intensive use and their impact on ecosystems, biocides and surfactants are still poorly regulated and poorly monitored at large scale. In the frame of the revision of the national regulatory surveillance plan of surface waters, France planned in 2018 a monitoring campaign at national scale focused on these two types of substances of very emerging concern. Forty-nine contaminants (32 biocides and 17 surfactants) were investigated in surface water and sediment samples from 91 sampling sites, and in effluent and sludge samples of 7 wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), in mainland France and overseas regions.

The use of diagenetic alterations in bone microstructure ('histotaphonomy') as indicators of funerary treatment in the past and for post-mortem interval calculations in forensic cases has received increasing attention in the last decade. Studies have used histological changes to conclude in-situ decomposition, mummification, infanticide and post-mortem interval. There has been very little attempt to experimentally validate the links between decomposition, depositional conditions, time-since-death and microscopic changes in human bone so that meaningful interpretations of archaeological and forensic observations can be made.

Cobalt-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using a modified sol-gel method. Thereafter, the obtained powder was deposited on a Suprasil glass substrate by employing a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. X-ray diffraction analysis with Rietveld refinement confirmed a hexagonal wurtzite ZnO phase belonging to the 6 space group for both samples in the NP and thin film forms.

The aim of the work is to compare the properties of nanohydroxyapatite coatings obtained using the electrophoretic deposition method (EDP) at 10 V, 20 V, and 30 V, and with deposit times of 2 and 5 min. The primary sedimentation was used to minimize the risk of the formation of particle agglomerates on the sample surface. Evaluation of the coating was performed by using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), optical profilometer, drop shape analyzer, and a nanoscratch tester.

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) provides a route to prepare highly stable and anisotropic organic glasses that are utilized in multi-layer structures such as organic light-emitting devices. While previous work has demonstrated that anisotropic glasses with uniaxial symmetry can be prepared by PVD, here, we prepare biaxially aligned glasses in which molecular orientation has a preferred in-plane direction. With the collective effect of the surface equilibration mechanism and template growth on an aligned substrate, macroscopic biaxial alignment is achieved in depositions as much as 180 K below the clearing point TLC-iso (and 50 K below the glass transition temperature Tg) with single-component disk-like (phenanthroperylene ester) and rod-like (itraconazole) mesogens.

Mutations in receptor guanylyl cyclase C (GC-C) cause severe gastrointestinal disease, including meconium ileus, early onset acute diarrhea, and pediatric inflammatory bowel disease that continues into adulthood. Agonists of GC-C are US Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs for the treatment of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Therapeutic strategies targeting GC-C are tested in preclinical mouse models, assuming that murine GC-C mimics human GC-C in its biochemical properties and downstream signaling events.

Background: Longitudinal measures of structural brain changes using MRI in relation to clinical features and progression patterns in PD have been assessed in previous studies, but few were conducted in well-defined and large cohorts, including prospective clinical assessments of both motor and non-motor symptoms.
Objective: We aimed to identify brain volumetric changes characterizing PD patients, and determine whether regional brain volumetric characteristics at baseline can predict motor, psycho-behavioral and cognitive evolution at one year in a prospective cohort of PD patients.
Methods: In this multicentric 1 year longitudinal study, PD patients and healthy controls from the MPI-R2* cohort were assessed for demographical, clinical and brain volumetric characteristics.

Because the combination of chiral and magnetic properties is becoming more and more attractive for magneto-chiral phenomena, we here aim at exploring the induction of chirality to achiral magnetic molecules as a strategy for the preparation of magneto-chiral objects. To this end, we have associated free base- and metallo-porphyrins with silica nano helices, using a variety of elaboration methods, and have studied them mainly by electronic natural circular dichroism (NCD) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. While electrostatic or covalent surface grafting uniformly yielded very low induced CD (ICD) for the four assayed porphyrins, a moderate response was observed when the porphyrins were incorporated into the interior of the double-walled helices, likely due to the association of the molecules with the chirally-organized gemini surfactant.

The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is critical for anabolism and biomass production. Here we show that the essential function of PPP in yeast is the synthesis of phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP) catalyzed by PRPP-synthetase. Using combinations of yeast mutants, we found that a mildly decreased synthesis of PRPP affects biomass production, resulting in reduced cell size, while a more severe decrease ends up affecting yeast doubling time.

ACT (Activated Clotting Time) is a point of care test (POCT) on whole blood, used to monitor the heparinization of patients in the operating room in cardiac surgery (ExtraCorporeal Circulation ECC) and in interventional cardiology (TAVI, AF ablation). The ACT is concerned both by the ISO 22 870 standard and French regulations regarding POCT. We performed an important work at the Bordeaux CHU on its accreditation, by rationalizing and making the park uniform (11 HemochronTM Signature Elite), standardizing the training and the habilitation of operators in medical units, introducing periodic quality controls, centralizing in the laboratory the management of the devices and reagents and by connecting it to the laboratory's computer system (Middleware, SIL et expert softwares).

While perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, non-targeted methods have recently revealed the presence of numerous unidentified per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Besides those methods, the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay has proved useful to estimate the contribution of unattributed perfluoroalkyl acids precursors (pre-PFAAs). In this study, an optimized extraction method was developed to examine the spatial distribution of 36 targeted PFAS in surface sediments collected at French nationwide scale (n = 43), including neutral, anionic and zwitterionic molecules.

Physical vapor deposition can be used to prepare highly stable organic glass systems where the molecules show orientational and translational ordering at the nanoscale. We have used low-dose four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM), enabled by a fast direct electron detector, to map columnar order in glassy samples of a discotic mesogen using a 2 nm probe. Both vapor-deposited and liquid-cooled glassy films show domains of similar orientation, but their size varies from tens to hundreds of nanometers, depending on processing.

Considering the relevance of room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials, we discuss the influence of donor and acceptor groups substituted on to a twisted three-fold symmetric hydrocarbon homotruxene, which presents a persistent RTP, even in the absence of donor or acceptor moieties, under ambient conditions as a result of the twisted π-system. Compared to a fluorine acceptor, a donor methoxy group increases the phosphorescence decay rate in solution, while in the solid-state, molecular aggregation and packing yield a very persistent phosphorescence visible by the eye. The RTP of the intrinsically apolar homotruxene is found to be modulated by polar substituents, whose main impact on the solid-state emission is due to altered packing in the crystal.
