Nanocomposite spin crossover (SCO) materials with gold nanoparticles (NPs) - displaying both electronic bistability and plasmonic properties - were synthesized and plasmon-enhanced photothermal spin state switching was evidenced. Chromosomal domains in Drosophila are marked by the insulator-binding proteins (IBPs) dCTCF/Beaf32 and cofactors that participate in regulating long-range interactions. Chromosomal borders are further enriched in specific histone modifications, yet the role of histone modifiers and nucleosome dynamics in this context remains largely unknown. A new radioiodinated photoaffinity compound, [(125)I]YE(Bpa)WSLAAPQRFNH2, derived from a peptide present in the rat neuropeptide FF (NPFF) precursor was synthesized, and its binding characteristics were investigated on a neuroblastoma clone, SH-SY5Y, stably expressing rat NPFF2 receptors tagged with the T7 epitope. The binding of the probe was saturable and revealed a high-affinity interaction (KD=0.24nM) with a single class of binding sites.

Twelve autosomal and 8 X chromosome Alu markers were genotyped for the first time in 161 Central and West Yakuts to test their ability to reconstruct the genetic history of these populations, the northernmost Turkic-speaker ethnic group living in Siberia. Autosomal data revealed that both groups showed extremely close genetic distances to other populations of Siberian origins that occupied areas from Lake Baikal, the ancestral place of origin of Yakuts, to North Siberia, their current territories. Autosomal and X chromosome data revealed some discrepancies on the genetic differentiation and the effective sizes of Central and West Yakuts.

We present new insight into the nature of aromaticity in metal clusters. We give computational arguments in favor of using the ring-current model over local indices, such as nucleus independent chemical shifts, for the determination of the magnetic aromaticity. Two approaches for estimating magnetically induced ring currents are employed for this purpose, one based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and the other where magnetically induced current densities (MICD) are explicitly calculated.

The site of Kromdraai B (KB) (Gauteng, South Africa) has yielded a minimum number of nine hominins including the type specimen of Paranthropus robustus (TM 1517), the only partial skeleton of this species known to date. Four of these individuals are juveniles, one is a subadult and four are young adults. They all occur with a macrofaunal assemblage spread across the succession of at least two time periods that occurred in South Africa approximately two million years ago.

Surface-relief photonic gratings of the spin-crossover metal-organic framework {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN)4]} (bpac = bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene) were elaborated by the combination of a sequential assembly process and lithographic methods. Optical diffraction, surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and Raman micro-spectroscopy were used to investigate the temperature dependence of the spin state of the iron(II) ions and the concomitant change of the refractive index of the grating material. The refractive index change associated with the high spin ((5)T) to low spin ((1)A) transition was found to be as high as Δn = 0.

We report on atomic force microscopy (AFM) and near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) investigations of single crystals of the spin crossover complex {Fe(pyrazine)[Pt(CN)4]} across the first-order thermal spin transition. We demonstrate for the first time that the change in spin state can be probed with sub-micrometer spatial resolution through various topographic features extracted from AFM data. This original approach based on surface topography analysis should be easy to implement to any phase change material exhibiting sizeable electron-lattice coupling.

The addition of cholesterol to the monoolein-based lipidic cubic phase (LCP) has been instrumental in obtaining high-resolution crystal structures of several G protein-coupled receptors. Here, we report the use of high-resolution magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy to record and assign the isotropic (13)C chemical shifts of cholesterol in lipidic lamellar and cubic phases at different hydration levels with monoolein and chain-deuterated DMPC as host lipids. The hydrogen-bonding patterns of cholesterol in these phases were determined from the NMR data by quantum chemical calculations.

Nondynamical electron correlation based on a genuine multiconfigurational theory is of considerable importance for a balanced ab initio calculation of aromatic and antiaromatic molecules either with open-shell character or quasi-degeneracy in the electronic states. In this paper, several peptide analogs of the selective ligand dNP(NMe)AFLFQPQRF-NH(2) modified in the putative address segment, were designed to be selective NPFF(2) receptor probes, synthesized and assayed. One peptide dA(NMe)AAFLFQPQRF-NH(2) displays a very high affinity for NPFF(2) receptors transfected in CHO cells, and a high selectivity versus NPFF(1) receptors.

Self-assembled plasmonic nanoparticle networks (PNN) composed of chains of 12 nm diameter crystalline gold nanoparticles exhibit a longitudinally coupled plasmon mode centered at 700 nm. We have exploited this longitudinal absorption band to efficiently confine light fields and concentrate heat sources in the close vicinity of these plasmonic chain networks. The mapping of the two phenomena on the same superstructures was performed by combining two-photon luminescence and fluorescence polarization anisotropy imaging techniques.

Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) interacts with specific receptors to modulate opioid functions in the central nervous system.
