Bilayer spin crossover (SCO)@polymer nanocomposites show robust and controllable actuation cycles upon an electrical stimulus. The anisotropic shape of the embedded particles as well as the mechanical coupling between the SCO particles and the matrix can substantially intensify the work output of the actuators.

Mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of stable even mass number mercury (Hg) isotopes is observed in rainfall and gaseous elemental Hg globally and is used to quantify atmospheric Hg deposition pathways. The chemical reaction and underlying even-Hg MIF mechanism are unknown however and speculated to be caused by Hg photo-oxidation on aerosols at the tropopause. Here, we investigate the Hg isotope composition of free tropospheric Hg and oxidized Hg forms at the high-altitude Pic du Midi Observatory.

Many nations responded to the corona virus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic by restricting travel and other activities during 2020, resulting in temporarily reduced emissions of CO, other greenhouse gases and ozone and aerosol precursors. We present the initial results from a coordinated Intercomparison, CovidMIP, of Earth system model simulations which assess the impact on climate of these emissions reductions. 12 models performed multiple initial-condition ensembles to produce over 300 simulations spanning both initial condition and model structural uncertainty.

Three Hofmann-like metal-organic frameworks {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN)4]}·G (bpac = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene) were synthesized with photoisomerizable guest molecules (G = trans-azobenzene, trans-stilbene or cis-stilbene) and were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry and powder X-ray diffraction. The insertion of guest molecules and their conformation were inferred from Raman and FTIR spectra and from single-crystal X-ray diffraction and confronted with computational simulation. The magnetic and photomagnetic behaviors of the framework are significantly altered by the different guest molecules and different conformations.

Classical molecular dynamics simulations have been combined with quantum (DFT) calculations of C NMR parameters in order to relate the experimental spectrum of the double-helix form of the amylose B-polymorph in highly crystalline conditions not only to its 3D structure but also to the arrangement of atoms in the crystal lattice. Structures obtained from these simulations or from geometry optimization procedures at the DFT level have shown the presence of hydrogen bond networks between sugars of the same helix or between residues of the two chains of the double helix. C NMR parameter calculations have revealed the impact of such a network on the chemical shifts of carbon atoms.

From three previously identified antiplasmodial hit compounds (-) and inactive series (), all based on a 2-trichloromethylquinazoline scaffold, we conducted a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study at position four of the quinazoline ring by synthesizing 42 novel derivatives bearing either a carboxamido- or an alkoxy-group, to identify antiplasmodial compounds and to enrich the knowledge about the 2-trichloromethylquinazoline antiplasmodial pharmacophore. All compounds were evaluated in vitro for their cytotoxicity towards the HepG2 cell line and their activity against the multiresistant K1 strain, using doxorubicin, chloroquine and doxycycline as reference drugs. Four hit-compounds (EC K1 ≤ 2 µM and SI ≥ 20) were identified among 4-carboxamido derivatives (, , and ) and two among 4-alkoxy derivatives ( and ).

To study the antikinetoplastid 3-nitroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine pharmacophore, a structure-activity relationship study was conducted through the synthesis of 26 original derivatives and their in vitro evaluation on both Leishmania spp and Trypanosoma brucei brucei. This SAR study showed that the antitrypanosomal pharmacophore was less restrictive than the antileishmanial one and highlighted positions 2, 6 and 8 of the imidazopyridine ring as key modulation points. None of the synthesized compounds allowed improvement in antileishmanial activity, compared to previous hit molecules in the series.

The modulation of light emission by Fe(II) spin-crossover processes in multifunctional materials has recently attracted major interest for the indirect and noninvasive monitoring of magnetic information storage. In order to approach this goal at the molecular level, three segmental ligand strands, -, were reacted with stoichiometric mixtures of divalent -block cations (M(II) = Fe(II) or Zn(II)) and trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III) = La(III) or Eu(III)) in acetonitrile to give -symmetrical dinuclear triple-stranded helical [LnM()] cations, which can be crystallized with noncoordinating counter-anions. The divalent metal M(II) is six-coordinate in the pseudo-octahedral sites produced by the facial wrapping of the three didentate binding units, the ligand field of which induces variable Fe(II) spin-state properties in [LnFe()] (strictly high-spin), [LnFe()] (spin-crossover (SCO) around room temperature), and [LnFe()] (SCO at very low temperature).

Six new 2-phenylbenzoxazole (PBO) derivatives, bearing either a methoxy or hydroxy group at position 5, were prepared via an efficient one-step synthesis that allowed both analogues to be obtained in equal proportions. These PBO derivatives also differed by the presence or absence of an alkyl substituent at the para-position of the phenyl group. In organic solutions, all six compounds were strongly fluorescent in the near-UV range.

Using ultrafast optical absorption spectroscopy, the room-temperature spin-state switching dynamics induced by a femtosecond laser pulse in high-quality thin films of the molecular spin-crossover (SCO) complex [Fe(HB(tz) ) ] (tz = 1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) are studied. These measurements reveal that the early, sub-picosecond, low-spin to high-spin photoswitching event, with linear response to the laser pulse energy, can be followed under certain conditions by a second switching process occurring on a timescale of tens of nanoseconds, enabling nonlinear amplification. Morphometric assessments of the dentition have played significant roles in hypotheses relating to taxonomic diversity among extinct hominins. In this regard, emphasis has been placed on the statistical appraisal of intraspecific variation to identify morphological criteria that convey maximum discriminatory power.
