Peripartum Depression: What's New?

Curr Psychiatry Rep

December 2024

Service Universitaire de Pédopsychiatrie, Hospital Group Du Havre, University Rouen Normandy, Le Havre, France.

Purpose Of The Review: Peripartum depression (PPD), including both depression during pregnancy and postpartum, is the most frequent health disorder during the perinatal period. It is a significant public health issue in many countries due to its prevalence and its impact on women, as well as on their partners and offspring. Here, we will attempt to untangle the most recent studies and publications, considering what it is essential to know in 2024 about PPD as a specific perinatal issue.

Background: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric condition often accompanied by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with a substantial prevalence of trauma history among affected individuals. The clinical, cognitive, and cerebral parallels shared with PTSD suggest a trauma-related etiology for BPD. Studies consistently demonstrate a reduction in hippocampal volume in individuals with BPD, echoing findings in PTSD.

Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted in France from 2018 to 2022, the study found that 13.1% of the 183 patients experienced a NE, with adverse events (AEs) like rheumatism reactivation being the most common.
  • * The results suggest that a careful, practitioner-supervised transition to biosimilars can lower the risk of NE, highlighting the importance of shared medical decision-making for effective patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically children with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), have a higher risk of thromboembolic events (TE), but more information is needed regarding the incidence and risk factors for better preventative care.
  • The study followed 1,344 pediatric patients from 1988 to 2013, finding very few instances of arterial (ATE) and venous thromboembolic events (VTE) during the follow-up period, with VTE being more frequent in specific circumstances.
  • Overall, while the risk of TE in this population is low, it was significantly linked to periods of active disease, post-surgery conditions, and hospitalization, while treatment with

What is the clinical detection threshold for lower limb length inequality? In silico study of reproducibility and optimization using a centimeter graduated support.

Orthop Traumatol Surg Res

December 2024

Société Française de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SoFCOT), 56 rue Boisssonade 75014 Paris, France.

Introduction: The threshold of a Leg Length Discrepancy (LLD) by clinical examination on a sheet or centimeter paper (CP) is not known precisely whether or not it concerns limbs equipped with a hip prosthesis. We therefore conducted a prospective in silico study in order to: (1) determine the reproducibility and sensitivity of the clinical measurement of the LLD in different ideal and "degraded" clinical situations, (2) determine the threshold from which the human eye is capable of detecting a length inequality in clinic, (3) to determine whether the use of a graduated support (centimeter paper) improves the clinical measurement threshold.

Hypothesis: Our hypothesis was that clinical measurement on a centimeter support would improve clinical measurement accuracy.

Background: Clinical trials and real-life data have reported an increased incidence of conjunctivitis in patients treated with dupilumab for their atopic dermatitis (AD). Although mostly mild in severity, in some cases conjunctivitis will appear or increase after dupilumab initiation, which can lead to dupilumab discontinuation.

Objectives: (1) To describe the characteristics of patients developing conjunctivitis requiring discontinuation of dupilumab; and (2) to analyse the factors associated with a complete conjunctivitis improvement after dupilumab discontinuation and a switch to tralokinumab or Janus kinase inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Admission to the hospital is a major risk factor for the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Whether thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin prevents symptomatic VTE in medically ill, hospitalized older adults remains debated. METHODS: In a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter trial, older adults (>70 years of age) hospitalized for acute medical conditions were randomly assigned to receive 40 mg a day of low-molecular-weight heparin (enoxaparin) or placebo for 6 to 14 days.
