The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has selected in 2006 a proposal based on ultra-intense laser fields with intensities reaching up to 10-10 W cm called 'ELI' for Extreme Light Infrastructure. The construction of a large-scale laser-centred, distributed pan-European research infrastructure, involving beyond the state-of-the-art ultra-short and ultra-intense laser technologies, received the approval for funding in 2011-2012. The three pillars of the ELI facility are being built in Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania.

Evolutionary Genetics of the Cavefish Astyanax mexicanus.

Blind and depigmented fish belonging to the species Astyanax mexicanus are outstanding models for evolutionary genetics. During their evolution in the darkness of caves, they have undergone a number of changes at the morphological, physiological, and behavioral levels, but they can still breed with their river-dwelling conspecifics. The fertile hybrids between these two morphotypes allow forward genetic approaches, from the search of quantitative trait loci to the identification of the mutations underlying the evolution of troglomorphism.

To investigate the role of oxidative stress and/or mitochondrial impairment in the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) during sepsis, we developed a sepsis-induced in vitro model using proximal tubular epithelial cells exposed to a bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS). This investigation has provided key features on the relationship between oxidative stress and mitochondrial respiratory chain activity defects. LPS treatment resulted in an increase in the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX-4), suggesting the cytosolic overexpression of nitric oxide and superoxide anion, the primary reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

We report on scanning-tunneling microscopy experiments in a charge-density wave (CDW) system allowing visually capturing and studying in detail the individual solitons corresponding to the self-trapping of just one electron. This "Amplitude Soliton" is marked by vanishing of the CDW amplitude and by the π shift of its phase. It might be the realization of the spinon--the long-sought particle (along with the holon) in the study of science of strongly correlated electronic systems.

NR4A2 controls the differentiation of selective dopaminergic nuclei in the zebrafish brain.

The orphan nuclear receptor NR4A2/Nurr1 is mandatory for the terminal differentiation of mesencephalic dopamine neurons in mammals, but a similar role has remained elusive in the homologous area of the fish brain, the posterior tuberculum. Using loss- and gain-of-function experiments in zebrafish, we show that NR4A2 is indeed responsible for the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in selective subpopulations of dopamine cells in the posterior tuberculum, as well as in the pretectum, preoptic area and telencephalon. Cross sections of the neural tube reveal that cells expressing the proliferation marker PCNA, NR4A2 and TH are aligned along a mediolateral progression rather than overlapping populations, suggesting that NR4A2 does not simply regulate TH expression but also controls more general steps of progenitor commitment towards the fully differentiated DA neuronal state.

A 244K genome-wide array based comparative genomic hybridization study was carried out in a familial translocation t(2;6)(p25;p21) balanced in the mother and unbalanced in her daughter. In the past, this translocation has allowed us to localize the HLA multigene cluster to chromosome 6. With microarray technology, confirmation of the chromosome localization of the HLA system was easily obtained, showing that such approach may be applied to the breakpoint localizations of other familial structural changes when they are unbalanced.
