We present a study of the inclusive production of the X(4140) state with the decay to the J/ψϕ final state in hadronic collisions. Based on 10.4 fb^{-1} of pp[over ¯] collision data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we report the first evidence for the prompt production of an X(4140) state and find the fraction of X(4140) events originating from b hadrons to be f_{b}=0.

Excited states of the neutron-rich nuclei (97,99)Rb were populated for the first time using the multistep Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams. Comparisons of the results with particle-rotor model calculations provide clear identification for the ground-state rotational band of (97)Rb as being built on the πg(9/2) [431] 3/2(+) Nilsson-model configuration. The ground-state excitation spectra of the Rb isotopes show a marked distinction between single-particle-like structures below N=60 and rotational bands above.

We present the first search for CPT-violating effects in the mixing of Bs(0) mesons using the full Run II data set with an integrated luminosity of 10.4 fb(-1) of proton-antiproton collisions collected using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure the CPT-violating asymmetry in the decay Bs(0)→μ(±)Ds(±) as a function of celestial direction and sidereal phase.

Seasonal snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere is the largest component of the terrestrial cryosphere and plays a major role in the climate system through strong positive feedbacks related to albedo. The snow-albedo feedback is invoked as an important cause for the polar amplification of ongoing and projected climate change, and its parameterization across models is an important source of uncertainty in climate simulations. Here, instead of developing a physical snow albedo scheme, we use a direct insertion approach to assimilate satellite-based surface albedo during the snow season (hereafter as snow albedo assimilation) into the land surface model ORCHIDEE (ORganizing Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic EcosystEms) and assess the influences of such assimilation on offline and coupled simulations.

First principle calculations of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data have seen widespread use in bioinorganic chemistry, perhaps most notably for modeling the Mn4Ca site in the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII). The logic implied by the calculations rests on the assumption that it is possible to a priori predict an accurate EXAFS spectrum provided that the underlying geometric structure is correct. The present study investigates the extent to which this is possible using state of the art EXAFS theory.

The unconstrained genomic DNA of bacteria forms a coil, whose volume exceeds 1000 times the volume of the cell. Since prokaryotes lack a membrane-bound nucleus, in sharp contrast with eukaryotes, the DNA may consequently be expected to occupy the whole available volume when constrained to fit in the cell. Still, it has been known for more than half a century that the DNA is localized in a well-defined region of the cell, called the nucleoid, which occupies only 15% to 25% of the total volume.

The behavior of a pyridinium-substituted dimethyldihydropyrene photo-switch under aerobic conditions was investigated. During irradiation with red light (λ ≥ 630 nm), this compound plays the role of oxygen sensitizer and is quantitatively converted into an endoperoxide derivative. The photo-produced endoperoxide then thermally releases singlet oxygen to regenerate the starting compound.

The design of more efficient catalytic electrodes remains an important objective for the development of water splitting electrolyzers. In this context a structured composite cathode material has been synthesized by electrodeposition of molybdenum sulfide (MoSx) into a poly(pyrrole-alkylammonium) matrix, previously coated onto carbon electrodes by oxidative electropolymerization of a pyrrole-alkylammonium monomer. The composite material showed an efficient electrocatalytic activity toward proton reduction and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

DCL1 is the ribonuclease that carries out miRNA biogenesis in plants. The enzyme has two tandem double stranded RNA binding domains (dsRBDs) in its C-terminus. Here we show that the first of these domains binds precursor RNA fragments when isolated and cooperates with the second domain in the recognition of substrate RNA.

The β-decay half-lives of 110 neutron-rich isotopes of the elements from _{37}Rb to _{50}Sn were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The 40 new half-lives follow robust systematics and highlight the persistence of shell effects. The new data have direct implications for r-process calculations and reinforce the notion that the second (A≈130) and the rare-earth-element (A≈160) abundance peaks may result from the freeze-out of an (n,γ)⇄(γ,n) equilibrium.

DNA unzipping, the separation of its double helix into single strands, is crucial in modulating a host of genetic processes. Although the large-scale separation of double-stranded DNA has been studied with a variety of theoretical and experimental techniques, the minute details of the very first steps of unzipping are still unclear. Here, we use atomistic molecular-dynamics simulations, coarse-grained simulations, and a statistical-mechanical model to study the initiation of DNA unzipping by an external force.

Purpose: Occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be assessed by either air monitoring or biomonitoring using urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) or 3-hydroxybenzo(a)pyrene (3-OHBaP). The aim of this study was to understand the links between atmospheric PAHs and urinary metabolites, in order to improve the biomonitoring strategy for assessing carcinogenic risk.
Methods: Personal air sampling for pyrene and BaP measurements, and urines for 1-OHP and 3-OHBaP analyses of seven workers from electrode production plant were collected every day of the working week.

Neutron reflectometry provides evidence of ternary protein adsorption within polyethylene glycol (PEG) brushes. Anti-PEG Immunoglobulin G antibodies (Abs) binding the methoxy terminated PEG chain segment specifically adsorb onto PEG brushes grafted to lipid monolayers on a solid support.
