The present study aims to explore the mechanisms of fetal origin of high susceptibility to adult high-fat diet induced-nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in rat offspring undergoing intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) induced by prenatal food restriction (FR) from gestational day 11 until full-term delivery. We observed that adult IUGR offspring rats exhibited gender-dependent catch-up growth with lower serum corticosterone (CORT) but up-regulation of the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) pathway, higher hepatic Kleiner scores and lower lipid export and oxidation. Furthermore, fetal IUGR offspring rats showed lower body weights with higher serum CORT but down-regulated IGF1 pathway, which was accompanied by enhanced lipid de novo synthetic gene expression, lower lipid output and oxidation gene expression.

The growth of C60 films on the pseudo-ten-fold (1 0 0) surface of the orthorhombic Al13Co4 quasicrystalline approximant was studied experimentally by scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction and photoemission spectroscopy. The (1 0 0) surface terminates at bulk-planes presenting local atomic configurations with five-fold symmetry-similar to quasicrystalline surfaces. While the films deposited at room temperature were found disordered, high-temperature growth (up to 693 K) led to quasi-ordered molecular films templated on the substrate rectangular unit mesh.

A combination of experimental methods was used to study the structure of In thin films deposited on the Pd(111) surface and the alloying behavior. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy results indicate that surface alloying takes place at room temperature. Below 2 monolayer equivalents (MLEs), the LEED patterns show the formation of three rotational domains of InPd(110) of poor structural quality on top of the Pd(111) substrate.

A detailed study of the (001) surface of the Al(2)Cu crystal using both experimental and ab initio computational methods is presented in this work. The combination of both approaches gives many arguments to match the surface plane with a bulk truncated surface model terminated by incomplete Al planes. The missing rows of Al atoms lead to a 2√2×√2R 45° surface reconstruction with two domains rotated by 90° from each other.

Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) assembly initiates through the formation of a linkage tetrasaccharide region serving as a primer for both chondroitin sulfate (CS) and heparan sulfate (HS) chain polymerization. A possible role for sulfation of the linkage structure and of the constitutive disaccharide unit of CS chains in the regulation of CS-GAG chain synthesis has been suggested. To investigate this, we determined whether sulfate substitution of galactose (Gal) residues of the linkage region or of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) of the disaccharide unit influences activity and specificity of chondroitin sulfate N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase-1 (CSGalNAcT-1), a key glycosyltransferase of CS biosynthesis.

We have used the pseudo-tenfold surface of the orthorhombic Al(13)Co(4) crystal as a template for the adsorption of Cu thin films of various thicknesses deposited at different temperatures. This study has been carried out by means of low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD). From 300 to 573 K, Cu adatoms grow pseudomorphically up to one monolayer.

We present a study of the infrared spectrum of N-methyl acetamide (NMA) performed by using molecular dynamics (MD) with a quantum electronic Hamiltonian. A recently developed method, based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and on a semiempirical level of quantum chemistry (SEBOMD), is employed. Bimodal activated carbons derived from resorcinol-formaldehyde cryogels.

Resorcinol-formaldehyde cryogels prepared at different dilution ratios have been activated with phosphoric acid at 450 °C and compared with their carbonaceous counterparts obtained by pyrolysis at 900 °C. Whereas the latter were, as expected, highly mesoporous carbons, the former cryogels had very different pore textures. Highly diluted cryogels allowed preparation of microporous materials with high surface areas, but activation of initially dense cryogels led to almost non-porous carbons, with much lower surface areas than those obtained by pyrolysis.

In the Sinnamary Estuary (French Guiana), a dense red biofilm grows on flooded surfaces. In order to characterize the iron oxides in this biofilm and to establish the nature of secondary minerals formed after anaerobic incubation, we conducted solid analysis and performed batch incubations. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 stimulates extracellular PP(i) (ePP(i)) generation and promotes chondrocalcinosis, which also occurs secondary to hyperparathyroidism-induced hypercalcemia. We previously demonstrated that ANK was up-regulated by TGF-β1 activation of ERK1/2 and Ca(2+)-dependent protein kinase C (PKCα). Thus, we investigated mechanisms by which calcium could affect ePP(i) metabolism, especially its main regulating proteins ANK and PC-1 (plasma cell membrane glycoprotein-1).

Plasmid-mediated dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes is widely recognized to take place in many environmental compartments but remains difficult to study in a global perspective because of the complexity of the environmental matrices considered and the lack of exhaustive tools. In this report, we used a molecular approach based on quantitative PCR to monitor the fate of the antibiotic resistance plasmid pB10 and its donor host in microbial communities collected from various wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludges and maintained in microcosms under different conditions. In aerated activated sludge microcosms, pB10 did not persist because of an apparent loss of the donor bacteria.

A large number of soil bioindicators were used to assess biological diversity and activity in soil polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the same soil after thermal desorption (TD) treatment. Abundance and biodiversity of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and microarthropods, as well as functional parameters such as enzymatic activities and soil respiration, were assessed during a two year period of in situ monitoring. We investigated the influence of vegetation (spontaneous vegetation and Medicago sativa) and TD treatment on biological functioning.

Characterization of the nanopowders was performed by X-ray diffraction analyses and transmission electron microscopy observations.

Surface complexation of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (gentisic acid) at the nanosized hematite-water interface: an ATR-FTIR study and modeling approach.

In this study, characteristic interactions of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (or gentisic acid, GA) with the surface of 15-nm-sized hematite (α-Fe2O3) were studied by combining batch macroscopic experiments, in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic investigations, and surface complexation modeling. A correlation between the pH, the amount of adsorbed GA, and the amount of Fe(III) released from the hematite surface was observed, whereas the dissolution of hematite nanoparticles became significant only at low pH and high ligand loading. From the ATR-FTIR results, two aqueous complex structures have been identified depending on pH.

Sorption of two naphthoic acids to goethite surface under flow through conditions.

While the transport of low molecular weight organic acids was widely investigated, little is known about the mobility of the carboxylated aromatic compounds containing double rings in natural porous media. This study combines macroscopic (batch and column), microscopic (vibration spectroscopy), and surface complexation modeling to evaluate the mobility of two PAH degradation products: naphthoic acid (1-naphthoic acid (NA) and 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA)), in porous media consisting of goethite-coated sand. The loss of ligands from aqueous solution was attributed to (1) a hydrogen-bonded surface complex present over the entire 3-10 pH range as well as protonated (2) surface and (3) bulk precipitates below pH 5.

The relationship between the presence/absence of the virulence-associated MAb3/1 epitope of sixteen Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 strains and their respective surface physicochemical properties is evidenced from electrokinetic measurements (microelectrophoresis) performed as a function of KNO(3) electrolyte concentration (range 1-100mM, pH∼6.5). Among the bacteria selected, nine original strains constitute the Dresden reference panel and differ according to the presence/absence of the virulence-associated monoclonal antibody MAb3/1 of the O-specific chain of the lipopolysaccharides (LPS).

Three mutations of the B4GALT7 gene [encoding β1,4-GalT7 (β1,4-galactosyltransferase 7)], corresponding to A186D, L206P and R270C, have been identified in patients with the progeroid form of the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and are described as being associated with the reduction or loss of β1,4-GalT7 activity. However, the molecular basis of the reduction or loss of activity remained to be determined. In the present study, wild-type, A186D, L206P and R270C β1,4-GalT7 were expressed in CHO618 cells as membrane proteins and in Escherichia coli as soluble proteins fused to MBP (maltose-binding protein).
