The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja radiata) is a vulnerable species displaying a discrete size-polymorphism in the northwest Atlantic Ocean (NWA). We conducted whole genome sequencing of samples collected across its range. Genetic diversity was similar at all sampled sites, but we discovered a ~ 31 megabase bi-allelic supergene associated with the size polymorphism, with the larger size allele having introgressed in the last ~160,000 years B.

In mammals, differentiation of germ cells is crucial for sexual reproduction, involving complex signaling pathways and environmental cues defined by the somatic cells of the gonads. This review examines the long-standing model positing that all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) acts as a meiosis-inducing substance (MIS) in the fetal ovary by inducing expression of STRA8 in female germ cells, while CYP26B1 serves as a meiosis-preventing substance (MPS) in the fetal testis by degrading ATRA and preventing STRA8 expression in the male germ cells until postnatal development. Recent genetic studies in the mouse challenge this paradigm, revealing that meiosis initiation in female germ cells can occur independently of ATRA signaling, with key roles played by other intrinsic factors like DAZL and DMRT1, and extrinsic signals such as BMPs and vitamin C.

Background: Non-absorbed dietary emulsifiers, including carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), directly disturb intestinal microbiota, thereby promoting chronic intestinal inflammation in mice. A randomised controlled-feeding study (Functional Research on Emulsifiers in Humans, FRESH) found that CMC also detrimentally impacts intestinal microbiota in some, but not all, healthy individuals.

In this contribution, we apply our newly developed ball-milling platform, which combines Raman spectroscopy and thermal (IR) imaging, as well as acoustic and high-speed optical video recordings, to the synthesis and transformation of citric acid-isonicotinamide (1:2) cocrystal polymorphs in transparent PMMA jars. Particularly, we demonstrate how Raman, temperature, acoustic, and video data are complementary and enable detection and connection of chemical and physical events happening during ball-milling in a time-resolved manner. Importantly, we show that the formation of the three cocrystal polymorphs can be detected through acoustic analyses solely.

Despite viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy, immune nonresponders (INR) among people living with HIV (PLWH) still have a higher risk of developing AIDS-related and non-AIDS-related complications. Our study aimed to investigate the phenotype and functions of Natural Killer (NK) cells in INR, to better understand underlying mechanisms of immune nonresponse. Retroviruses carry a genomic intron-containing RNA with a long structured 5'-untranslated region, which acts either as a genome encapsidated in the viral progeny or as an mRNA encoding the key structural protein, Gag. We developed a single-molecule microscopy approach to simultaneously visualize the viral mRNA and the nascent Gag protein during translation directly in the cell. We found that a minority of the RNA molecules serve as mRNA and that they are translated in a fast and efficient process.

Research has also shown a correlation between human and canine migration across time and space, highlighting a strong relationship between man and his best friend.

The advent of high-throughput omics data and the generation of new algorithms provide the biologists with the opportunity to explore living processes in the context of systems biology aiming at revealing the gene interactions, the networks underlying complex cellular functions. In this article, we discuss two methods for gene network reconstruction, WGCNA (Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis) developed by Steve Horvath and collaborators in 2008, and MIIC (Multivariate Information-based Inductive Causation) developed by Hervé Isambert and his team in 2017 and 2024. These two methods are complementary, WGCNA generating undirected networks in which most gene-to-gene interactions are indirect, while MIIC reveals direct interactions and some causal links.
