Nanostructured architectures based on graphene/metal interfaces might be efficiently exploited in hydrogen storage due to the attractive capability to provide adsorption sites both at the top side of graphene and at the metal substrate after intercalation. We combined in situ high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy with theoretical calculations to determine the arrangement of hydrogen atoms at the graphene/Ni(111) interface at room temperature. Our results show that at low coverage H atoms predominantly adsorb as monomers and that chemisorption saturates when ∼25% of the surface is hydrogenated.

Cadmium yellows (CdYs) refer to a family of cadmium sulfide pigments, which have been widely used by artists since the late 19th century. Despite being considered stable, they are suffering from discoloration in iconic paintings, such as Joy of Life by Matisse, Flowers in a blue vase by Van Gogh, and The Scream by Munch, most likely due to the formation of CdSO ⋅n H O. The driving factors of the CdYs degradation and how these affect the overall process are still unknown.

The absorption of light gives a pigment its colour and its reason for being, but it also creates excited states, that is, new molecules with an energy excess that can be dissipated through degradation pathways. Photodegradation processes provoke long-term, cumulative and irreversible colour changes (fading, darkening, blanching) of which the prediction and prevention are challenging tasks. Of all the environmental risks that affect heritage materials, light exposure is the only one that cannot be controlled without any impact on the optimal display of the exhibit.

Dendritic Cells (DCs), the most potent antigen-presenting cells, play a critical role in the detection of invading pathogens, which are recognized also by multiple carbohydrate-specific receptors. Among them, DC-SIGN is one of the best characterized, with high-mannose and Lewis-type glycan specificity. We have designed and synthesised a new organometallic molecule containing three ferrocene groups for use as a highly sensitive electrochemical marker in biological assays. This trisferrocene derivative was conjugated to different PNA monomers, and the electrochemical activities of the conjugates were extensively investigated in organic solvents, in view of their potential diagnostic applications. The results showed that the introduction of a trisferrocene unit on the PNA monomer triples the current signal in comparison with the monoferrocene-labelled one.
