Aluminum bowtie nanoantennas represent a possibility to confine and enhance electromagnetic (EM) field at optical frequencies in subwavelength regions by using an abundant and inexpensive metal. The native oxidation process of this metal is often viewed as a limitation for its application in plasmonics. Here, we show that in close gap configurations, the high refractive index of the native aluminum oxide helps in squeezing the plasmonic mode in extremely reduced size volumes, providing a higher EM near-field confinement and enhancement in the bowtie antenna gaps than achieved in the pure aluminum counterpart.

CNR NANOTEC - Institute of Nanotechnology, UOS Cosenza, 87036 Arcavacata di Rende, CS, Italy; MAT_InLAB, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Calabria, 87036 Arcavacata di Rende, CS, Italy. Electronic address:

The focus of this work is pointing out the different behavior of two structurally related Pt complexes, the anionic cyclometalated NBu[(Bzq)Pt(Thio)], 1 and the neutral [(Phen)Pt(Thio)], 2, (Bzq = benzo[h]quinoline, Phen = 1,10-phenantroline, Thio = 1,2-benzenedithiolate), on the interaction with human serum albumin (HSA), a key drug-delivery protein in the bloodstream. Being very limited the number of anionic Pt complexes reported to date, this is a pioneering example of report on a protein-ligand interaction involving a negatively charged platinum compound. The study was carried out by using fluorescence spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and molecular docking simulations.

We investigate the emission of single photons from CdSe/CdS dots-in-rod which are optically trapped in the focus of a deep parabolic mirror. Thanks to this mirror, we are able to image almost the full 4π emission pattern of nanometer-sized elementary dipoles and verify the alignment of the rods within the optical trap. From the motional dynamics of the emitters in the trap, we infer that the single-photon emission occurs from clusters comprising several emitters.

Quantum fluids of light are realized in semiconductor microcavities using exciton-polaritons, solid-state quasi-particles with a light mass and sizeable interactions. Here, we use the microscopic analogue of oceanographic techniques to measure the excitation spectrum of a thermalised polariton condensate. Increasing the fluid density, we demonstrate the transition from a free-particle parabolic dispersion to a linear, sound-like Goldstone mode characteristic of superfluids at equilibrium.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2019

IIT-NCH-Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia-Nanochemistry Department , via Morego 30 , 16163 Genova , Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Nanocrystals (NCs) of F, In-codoped CdO (FICO) exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the near-infrared (NIR) range, making them ideal for next-generation electrochromic "smart windows."
  • By adjusting dopant concentrations in FICO NCs, researchers can fine-tune the LSPR, leading to highly transparent mesoporous thin films that maintain optimal optical and electrical properties without scattering.
  • These FICO NC-based films can dynamically control LSPR frequencies through electrochemical doping, allowing for selective regulation of NIR light transmittance, which can significantly reduce solar heat gain while preserving visible light clarity.

Graphene Labs, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Via Morego 30, 16163, Genova, Italy.

The ability to generate, amplify, mix, and modulate sound with no harmonic distortion in a passive opto-acoustic device would revolutionize the field of acoustics. The photo-thermo-acoustic (PTA) effect allows to transduce light into sound without any bulk electro-mechanically moving parts and electrical connections, as for conventional loudspeakers. Also, PTA devices can be integrated with standard silicon complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication techniques.

The self-trapping of exciton-polariton condensates is demonstrated and explained by the formation of a new polaronlike state. Above the polariton lasing threshold, local variation of the lattice temperature provides the mechanism for an attractive interaction between polaritons. Because of this attraction, the condensate collapses into a small bright spot.

Sci Rep

March 2019

Center for Life Nano science @ Sapienza, Isituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Viale Regina Elena, 291, I-00161, Roma, Italy.

Standard imaging systems provide a spatial resolution that is ultimately dictated by the numerical aperture (NA) of the illumination and collection optics. In biological tissues, the resolution is strongly affected by scattering, which limits the penetration depth to a few tenths of microns. Here, we exploit the properties of speckle patterns embedded into a strongly scattering matrix to illuminate the sample at high spatial frequency content.
