The Fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein (FMRP) is a multi-domain protein involved in interactions with various macromolecules, including proteins and coding/non-coding RNAs. The three KH domains (KH0, KH1 and KH2) within FMRP are recognized for their roles in mRNA binding. In the context of Fragile X syndrome (FXS), over-and-above CGG triplet repeats expansion, three specific point mutations have been identified, each affecting one of the three KH domains (KH0, KH1, and KH2) resulting in the expression of non-functional FMRP.

A comprehensive understanding of the molecules that play key roles in the physiological and pathological homeostasis of the human intervertebral disc (IVD) remains challenging, as does the development of new therapeutic treatments. We recently found a positive correlation between IVD degeneration (IDD) and P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) expression increases both in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus. Using immunocytochemistry, reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), overexpression, and chromatin immunoprecipitation, we found that NFATc1 and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) are critical regulators of P2X7R.

Two -like isolates, 8cVS16 and 9fVS26, were isolated from a water distribution system (WDS) in a healthcare facility. Cells were Gram- and Ziehl Neelsen-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile, and exhibited a blue-white fluorescence under Wood's lamp at 365 nm. The strains grew in a range of 32-37 °C on BCYE with (C+), GVPC, and MWY agar medium, with a positive reaction for oxidase, catalase, and gelatinase.

Mannosyl-oligosaccharide glucosidase - congenital disorder of glycosylation (MOGS-CDG) is determined by biallelic mutations in the mannosyl-oligosaccharide glucosidase (glucosidase I) gene. MOGS-CDG is a rare disorder affecting the processing of N-Glycans (CDG type II) and is characterized by prominent neurological involvement including hypotonia, developmental delay, seizures and movement disorders. The M13 nanovector was conjugated with the photosensitizer Rose Bengal (RB), and the photodynamic anticancer effects of the resulting M13-RB bioconjugate were investigated on CC cells.

Major strides have been made in the development of FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH RT) in the last ten years, but there are still many obstacles to overcome for transfer to the clinic to become a reality. Although preclinical and first-in-human clinical evidence suggests that ultra-high dose rates (UHDRs) induce a sparing effect in normal tissue without modifying the therapeutic effect on the tumor, successful clinical translation of FLASH-RT depends on a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underpinning the sparing effect. Suitable in vitro studies are required to fully understand the radiobiological mechanisms associated with UHDRs.

Tuning the low-temperature phase behavior of aqueous ionic liquids.

Water's anomalous behavior is often explained using a two-liquid model, where two types of water, high-density liquid (HDL) and low-density liquid (LDL), can be separated a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) at low temperature. Mixtures of water and the ionic liquid hydrazinium trifluoroacetate were suggested to also show an LLPT but with the advantage that there is no rapid ice crystallization hampering its observation. It remains controversial whether these solutions exhibit an LLPT or are instead associated with complex phase separation phenomena.

Background: Barley flour, known to be rich in various phytochemicals, has been demonstrated to improve the technological and nutritional properties of pasta; however, its volatile profile, on which its aromatic properties depend, also plays an important role in the acceptance of barley-enriched pasta. In the present work, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of semolina doughs enriched with different percentages of barley and of the related pasta were characterized by solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) coupled to gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and evaluated using a multivariate statistical approach, including principal component analysis (PCA), cluster heatmaps, Pearson's and Spearman's correlations, and partial least squares correlation (PLSC).

Results: The effects of single raw materials, and their interactions, were studied to establish their importance in the volatile profile of the samples, and the correlation between the dough VOCs and the processed product VOCs was assessed.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) has been proposed to protect bacteria from antibiotics, pointing to HS-producing enzymes as possible targets for the development of antibiotic adjuvants. Here, MIC assays performed with mutants producing altered HS levels demonstrate that HS does not affect antibiotic resistance in this bacterium. Moreover, correlation analyses in a large collection of cystic fibrosis isolates argue against the protective role of HS from antibiotic activity during chronic lung infection.
