Despite maximally safe resection of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-defined contrast-enhanced (CE) central tumor area and chemoradiotherapy, most patients with glioblastoma (GBM) relapse within a year in peritumoral FLAIR regions. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) can discriminate metabolic tumor areas with higher recurrence potential as CNI+ regions (choline/-acetyl-aspartate index >2) can predict relapse sites. As relapses are mainly imputed to glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs), CNI+ areas might be GSC enriched.

Background: The aim of the study was to investigate long-term patient consequences of cranial nerve injury (CNI) caused by carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in patients with identified CNI at the 30-day follow-up.
Methods: Consecutive patients operated for symptomatic carotid artery stenosis 2015-2019 with a documented CNI at the 30-day follow-up after CEA were recruited to this cross-sectional survey. Telephone interviews were conducted >1 year after CEA utilizing survey instruments developed to uncover CNI symptoms.

The aim of this study was to characterise pulmonary aspiration of refluxate in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) by continuous pulse oximetry (SpO2) during the supine phase of a scintigraphic reflux study. Variables assessed for significance included age, hiatus hernia, frequency, amplitude of reflux and clearance of reflux from the oesophagus/pharynx. The patients included in this study had established GORD and LPR by clinical history.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and oesophagectomy is the standard of care for resectable oesophageal adenocarcinomas. Survival outcomes following resection have been improving over time while NACT remain largely unchanged. Indeed, a recent meta-analysis of randomized control trials did not demonstrate a survival benefit in adding NACT, raising the possibility that improved surgical techniques may be reducing the perceived effectiveness of NACT.

Objectives: Mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) shows promise in investigating reflux disease by reflecting esophageal mucosal integrity. This study aimed to measure MNBI by both conventional and simple methods in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in order to evaluate the efficacy of the simple measurement method.
Methods: Altogether 187 patients were divided into LPR (n = 105) or GERD (n = 82) groups according to their predominant symptom profile, and underwent off-therapy impedance-pH monitoring.

Larval are used as a genetically accessible study case in many areas of biological research. Here we report a fast, robust and user-friendly procedure for the whole-body multi-fluorescence imaging of larvae; the protocol has been optimized specifically for larvae by systematically tackling the pitfalls associated with clearing this small but cuticularized organism. Tests on various fluorescent proteins reveal that the recently introduced monomeric infrared fluorescent protein (mIFP) is particularly suitable for our approach.

We investigated lysosome dynamics during neuronal stem cell (NSC) differentiation by two quantitative and complementary biophysical methods based on fluorescence: imaging-derived mean square displacement (MSD) and single-particle tracking (SPT). The former extracts the average dynamics and size of the whole population of moving lysosomes directly from imaging, with no need to calculate single trajectories; the latter resolves the finest heterogeneities and dynamic features at the single-lysosome level, which are lost in the MSD analysis. In brief, MSD analysis reveals that, from a structural point of view, lysosomes decrement in size during NSC differentiation, from 1 μm average diameter in the embryonic cells to approximately 500 nm diameter in the fully differentiated cells.

We present a series of 7 cases of recurrent fungal pneumonia in association with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Influenza A(H3N2) viruses evade human immunity primarily by acquiring antigenic changes in the haemagglutinin (HA). HA receptor-binding features of contemporary A(H3N2) viruses hinder traditional antigenic characterization using haemagglutination inhibition and promote selection of HA mutants.
