A Recent Update on the Impact of Nano-Selenium on Plant Growth, Metabolism, and Stress Tolerance.

Plants (Basel)

February 2023

Department of Bioresources and Food Science, Institute of Natural Science and Agriculture, Konkuk University, Seoul 05029, Republic of Korea.

Selenium (Se) is a microelement that plays an important nutrient role by influencing various physiological and biochemical traits in plants. It has been shown to stimulate plant metabolism, enhancing secondary metabolites and lowering abiotic and biotic stress in plants. Globally, the enormous applications of nanotechnology in the food and agricultural sectors have vastly expanded.

Evaluation of cytotoxicity of hematite nanoparticles in bacteria and human cell lines.

Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces

September 2017

School of Bio Science, CMS College of Science and Commerce, Chinnavedampati (PO), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.

Metal nanoparticles have a great impact and even change the composition of soil microbial communities. This poses the risk of their accumulation in the ecosystem, which may call on health hazard. Statistical techniques such as Plackett-Burman design, Response Surface Methodology were used for optimizing medium constituents for Bacillus cereus SVK1 and other critical variables responsible for the production of biomolecules and biosynthesis of hematite nanoparticles.

Study on the accumulation level of heavy metals was conducted on sediment and fishes from estuaries of Bay of Bengal. Heavy metals were determined by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and the results were compared to permissible limits of WHO/USEPA. The accumulation patterns of Fe and Cd were found predominantly in all samples tested when correlated with other metals.

Biomaterial-centred bacterial infections present common and challenging complications with medical implants like ureteral stent which provide substratum for the biofilm formation. Hence the purpose of this study is to make antibacterial stent surface with biodegradable polymer (tocopherol acetate) and anti-infective agents (norfloxacin and metronidazole) using a modified dip-coating procedure. This is done by impregnating the stent pieces in the anti-infective solution (a mixture of norfloxacin-metronidazole and polymer) for uniform surface coating (drug-carrier-coated stents).
