Division of Biomedical Informatics, Systems Biomedical Informatics Research Centre, Seoul National University College of Medicine, 103 Daehak-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, 03080, Republic of Korea.

Introduction: With the availability of retrospective pharmacovigilance data, the common data model (CDM) has been identified as an efficient approach towards anonymized multicenter analysis; however, the establishment of a suitable model for individual medical systems and applications supporting their analysis is a challenge.

Objective: The aim of this study was to construct a specialized Korean CDM (K-CDM) for pharmacovigilance systems based on a clinical scenario to detect adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

Methods: De-identified patient records (n = 5,402,129) from 13 institutions were converted to the K-CDM.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the change of SHM in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: Thirty-one sex-matched patients with knee OA and 31 normal subjects were recruited.

Candy Closure Technique for Chronic Open Infective Lateral Malleolus Bursitis.

Biomed Res Int

August 2019

Department of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Eulji Medical Center, Eulji University, 68 Hangeulbiseok-ro, Nowoungu, 01830 Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The aim of this study was to report the effectiveness of the Candy closure technique as a treatment for chronic open infective lateral malleolus bursitis. From June 2014 to March 2018, we performed the Candy closure technique as a treatment for chronic open infective lateral malleolus bursitis in nine patients without secondary operation. We first performed infectious tissue debridement to control infection, and if primary closure was not possible, we performed the Candy closure technique for small wounds.

Biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS) is a minimally invasive spinal surgery, which is basically similar to microscopic spinal surgery in terms of the use of floating technique and technically similar to conventional percutaneous endoscopic spinal surgery in terms of the use of endoscopic or arthroscopic instruments. Using two independent portals (viewing and working) and maintaining a certain distance from the bony and neural structures allow closer access to the target lesion through a panoramic view by free handling of the scope and instruments rather than through a fixed view by docking into the Kambin's triangle. Minimally invasive surgery allows for reduced dissection and inevitable muscle injury, preserving stability and reducing risks of restabilization.

Purpose: To evaluate the accessibility of the preganglionic epidural space in patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy treated with epidural steroid injection (ESI) through trans-lateral recess (TLR) approach.

Methods: From September 2016 to December 2016, we enrolled 50 consecutive preganglionic ESI through TLR approach for 38 patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy at or below L4 territory. Fifteen of patients were diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation and 23 with lumbar spinal stenosis.

March 2019

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seongnam, Korea.

Ultrasound diathermy is widely used for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and other soft tissue injuries. Its use as a therapeutic modality is believed to be safe, with very few reported complications. Here, we report two patients who developed focal bone marrow abnormalities after receiving ultrasound diathermy.

Study Design: A retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: To compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) supplemented with plate fixation using allograft with those who underwent ACDF using tricortical iliac autograft.

Overview Of Literature: As plate fixation is becoming popular, it is reported that ACDF using allograft may have similar outcomes compared with ACDF using autograft.

A cross-sectional study of surgical glove perforation during the posterior lumbar interbody spinal fusion surgery: Its frequency, location, and risk factors.

Medicine (Baltimore)

June 2018

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul Red Cross Hospital Department of Orthopedic Surgery, CM General Hospital Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Konkuk University Medical Center, Konkuk University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Lumbar fusion surgery was known to pose a greater risk of surgical glove perforation. However, there has been no study on the glove perforation that can transmit the blood-borne disease to the patient and surgical staff members in the posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery (PLIFs).We performed a cross-sectional study to investigate the glove perforation during the PLIFs.

Sesamoid Position in Hallux Valgus in Relation to the Coronal Rotation of the First Metatarsal.

Foot Ankle Clin

June 2018

Foot & Ankle Clinic, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Eulji Hospital, 68 Hangeulbiseok-ro, Nowon-gu, Seoul 01830, Korea. Electronic address:

Hallux valgus (HV) is not a simple two-dimensional deformity but is instead a three-dimensional deformity that is closely linked to sesamoid position and first metatarsal (MT) pronation. HV may or may not be accompanied by sesamoid subluxation and/or first MT head pronation. Each of these scenarios should be assessed using weighted computed tomography scan preoperatively, and the necessary corrections should be performed accordingly.
