Development and Application of an Active Pharmacovigilance Framework Based on Electronic Healthcare Records from Multiple Centers in Korea.

Introduction: With the availability of retrospective pharmacovigilance data, the common data model (CDM) has been identified as an efficient approach towards anonymized multicenter analysis; however, the establishment of a suitable model for individual medical systems and applications supporting their analysis is a challenge.

Objective: The aim of this study was to construct a specialized Korean CDM (K-CDM) for pharmacovigilance systems based on a clinical scenario to detect adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

Methods: De-identified patient records (n = 5,402,129) from 13 institutions were converted to the K-CDM.

Comparison of screw-home movement between patients with knee osteoarthritis and normal adults.

Background: Tibial rotation accompanying sagittal movement contains the phenomenon of screw-home movement (SHM) of the knee, which plays an important role in knee stability during extension.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the change of SHM in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: Thirty-one sex-matched patients with knee OA and 31 normal subjects were recruited.

Sports injury and illness incidence among South Korean elite athletes in the 2018 Asian Games: a single-physician prospective study of 782 athletes.

Objective: The increasing incidence of sports injury among athletes calls for systemic surveillance of injuries and illnesses in this field to develop preventive measures. The patterns of injuries and illnesses that occurred among Korean athletes during the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia were studied.

Methods: We recorded the occurrence of all injuries and illnesses reported to the chief medical officer, coordinated with the help of an instant social messaging application in real time.

Candy Closure Technique for Chronic Open Infective Lateral Malleolus Bursitis.

The aim of this study was to report the effectiveness of the Candy closure technique as a treatment for chronic open infective lateral malleolus bursitis. From June 2014 to March 2018, we performed the Candy closure technique as a treatment for chronic open infective lateral malleolus bursitis in nine patients without secondary operation. We first performed infectious tissue debridement to control infection, and if primary closure was not possible, we performed the Candy closure technique for small wounds.

Biportal Endoscopic Spinal Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.

Biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS) is a minimally invasive spinal surgery, which is basically similar to microscopic spinal surgery in terms of the use of floating technique and technically similar to conventional percutaneous endoscopic spinal surgery in terms of the use of endoscopic or arthroscopic instruments. Using two independent portals (viewing and working) and maintaining a certain distance from the bony and neural structures allow closer access to the target lesion through a panoramic view by free handling of the scope and instruments rather than through a fixed view by docking into the Kambin's triangle. Minimally invasive surgery allows for reduced dissection and inevitable muscle injury, preserving stability and reducing risks of restabilization.

An evaluation of contrast dispersal pattern on preganglionic epidural injection through trans-lateral recess approach in patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy.

Purpose: To evaluate the accessibility of the preganglionic epidural space in patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy treated with epidural steroid injection (ESI) through trans-lateral recess (TLR) approach.

Methods: From September 2016 to December 2016, we enrolled 50 consecutive preganglionic ESI through TLR approach for 38 patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy at or below L4 territory. Fifteen of patients were diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation and 23 with lumbar spinal stenosis.

Focal Bone Marrow Lesions: A Complication of Ultrasound Diathermy.

Ultrasound diathermy is widely used for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and other soft tissue injuries. Its use as a therapeutic modality is believed to be safe, with very few reported complications. Here, we report two patients who developed focal bone marrow abnormalities after receiving ultrasound diathermy.

A cross-sectional study of surgical glove perforation during the posterior lumbar interbody spinal fusion surgery: Its frequency, location, and risk factors.

Lumbar fusion surgery was known to pose a greater risk of surgical glove perforation. However, there has been no study on the glove perforation that can transmit the blood-borne disease to the patient and surgical staff members in the posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery (PLIFs).We performed a cross-sectional study to investigate the glove perforation during the PLIFs.

Sesamoid Position in Hallux Valgus in Relation to the Coronal Rotation of the First Metatarsal.

Hallux valgus (HV) is not a simple two-dimensional deformity but is instead a three-dimensional deformity that is closely linked to sesamoid position and first metatarsal (MT) pronation. HV may or may not be accompanied by sesamoid subluxation and/or first MT head pronation. Each of these scenarios should be assessed using weighted computed tomography scan preoperatively, and the necessary corrections should be performed accordingly.

Medialized repair for retracted rotator cuff tears.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional outcomes of medialized rotator cuff repair and the continuity of repaired tendon in chronic retracted rotator cuff tears.

Methods: Thirty-five consecutive patients were selected from 153 cases that underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair for more than medium-sized posterosuperior rotator cuff tears between July 2009 and July 2012 performed with the medialized repair. All cases were available for at least 2 years of postoperative follow-up.

Structural Femoral Shaft Allografts for Anterior Spinal Column Reconstruction in Osteoporotic Spines.

This study was to investigate the clinical and radiographical outcomes of anterior spinal column reconstruction using structural femoral shaft allografts in osteoporotic patients. Retrospective analyses of medical records, radiographic parameters, and postoperative complications were performed in twenty-one patients who underwent anterior spinal column reconstruction surgery for osteoporotic vertebral collapse or nonunion. Surgical invasiveness, clinical outcomes, postoperative complications, and radiographic outcomes were evaluated.

Geriatric risk in the surgical management of infectious spondylitis.

Aim: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare clinical outcomes in patients aged >65 years and <65 years who have undergone surgery for infectious spondylitis, and to identify any prognostic factors.

Methods: We reviewed 60 consecutive patients treated surgically for infectious spondylitis. We reviewed patients' medical records especially focusing on comorbidities, preoperative serum albumin levels, postoperative complications and control of infection on follow up.
