Introduction: In a 5-year follow-up study, we investigated the enduring effects of cognitive training on older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Methods: A randomized controlled single-blind trial involved 145 older adults with MCI, assigned to cognitive training (MEMO+), an active control psychosocial intervention, or a no-contact condition. Five-year effects were measured on immediate and delayed memory recall, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment screening test (MoCA), self-reported strategy use, and daily living difficulties.

Timely and accurate identification of yeasts is essential for adequate treatment, considering the increase in antifungal resistance of some species, particularly for . Current matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) manufacturer's protocol for identification of yeasts requires 24- to 72-h cultivation on Sabouraud dextrose media (SAB), but not some of the mainstay primary culture media used in mycology such as inhibitory mold agar (IMA), Mycosel, CHROMagar Candida Plus, and CHROMagar Candida. As culture media can influence MALDI-TOF MS identification results, this study evaluated the accuracy and performance of identification of clinically relevant yeasts on these first-line media using the VITEK-MS MALDI-TOF MS system.

Haptic perception is used in the anatomy laboratory with the handling of three-dimensional (3D) prosections, dissections, and synthetic models of anatomical structures. Vision-based spatial ability has been found to correlate with performance on tests of 3D anatomy knowledge in previous studies. The objective was to explore whether haptic-based spatial ability was correlated with vision-based spatial ability.

Article Synopsis
  • Klebsiella oxytoca is a harmful, gram-negative bacterium that typically lives in the intestines and can lead to infections like antibiotic-associated hemorrhagic colitis in humans.
  • The case discussed involves colitis triggered by toxin-producing strains of K. oxytoca that developed in a patient experiencing chronic diarrhea.
  • The condition was successfully treated through a procedure known as fecal microbiota transplant, which involves transferring healthy gut bacteria to restore balance.

Spatial abilities (SAs) are cognitive resources used to mentally manipulate representations of objects to solve problems. Haptic abilities (HAs) represent tactile interactions with real-world objects transforming somatic information into mental representations. Both are proposed to be factors in anatomy education, yet relationships between SAs and HAs remain unknown.

Investigation of Conditions for Capture of Live with Polyclonal and Recombinant Antibodies.

Biosensors (Basel)

May 2022

Laboratory for Nano-Technologies and Nano-Characterization (LN2)-CNRS UMI-3463, Interdisciplinary Institute for Technological Innovation (3IT), Université de Sherbrooke, 3000 Boul. de l'Université, Sherbrooke, QC J1K 0A5, Canada.

Since has caused punctual epidemics through various water systems, the need for a biosensor for fast and accurate detection of pathogenic bacteria in industrial and environmental water has increased. In this report, we evaluated conditions for the capture of live on a surface by polyclonal antibodies (pAb) and recombinant antibodies (recAb) targeting the bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Using immunoassay and PCR quantification, we demonstrated that, when exposed to live in PBS or in a mixture containing other non-target bacteria, recAb captured one third fewer than pAb, but with a 40% lower standard deviation, even when using the same batch of pAb.

The Abbott ID NOW™ COVID-19 assay has been shown as a reliable and sensitive alternative to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing from nasopharyngeal or nasal samples in symptomatic patients. Water gargle is an acceptable noninvasive alternative specimen for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection by RT-PCR. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of water gargle samples for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 using the ID NOW.

Most Canadians with dementia die in long-term care (LTC) facilities. No data are routinely collected in Canada on the quality of end-of-life care provided to this vulnerable population, leading to significant knowledge gaps. The Quebec Observatory on End-of-Life Care for People with Dementia was created to address these gaps.

Aim: Integrated knowledge translation (IKT) is an increasingly recommended collaborative approach to minimize knowledge translation gap. Still, few studies have documented the impact of IKT to optimize knowledge uptake in healthcare settings. An IKT-based clinical algorithm (Algo) was deployed in Quebec (Canada) homecare services to support skill mix for selecting bathing equipment for community-dwelling adults.

This paper describes the software design/development process leading to an improved computerized clinical/management solution-RSIPA (2016 version)-integrating care pathways (CPs) specifically designed to meet the needs of frail and disabled older adults in home care. The development methodology used Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) for the initial system design and participatory design (PD) to involve stakeholders and end users, along with AGILE SCRUM methodology to provide rapid iterations in adapting to new requests. Given scarce project resources, we opted to combine methodologies to efficiently deliver a fully functional system for three of the five CP clinical phases.

Nutrition and the ageing brain: Moving towards clinical applications.

Ageing Res Rev

September 2020

Department of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine, Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Electronic address:

The global increases in life expectancy and population have resulted in a growing ageing population and with it a growing number of people living with age-related neurodegenerative conditions and dementia, shifting focus towards methods of prevention, with lifestyle approaches such as nutrition representing a promising avenue for further development. This overview summarises the main themes discussed during the 3 Symposium on "Nutrition for the Ageing Brain: Moving Towards Clinical Applications" held in Madrid in August 2018, enlarged with the current state of knowledge on how nutrition influences healthy ageing and gives recommendations regarding how the critical field of nutrition and neurodegeneration research should move forward into the future. Specific nutrients are discussed as well as the impact of multi-nutrient and whole diet approaches, showing particular promise to combatting the growing burden of age-related cognitive decline.
