Photodynamic therapy, an alternative that has gained weight and popularity compared to current conventional therapies in the treatment of cancer, is a minimally invasive therapeutic strategy that generally results from the simultaneous action of three factors: a molecule with high sensitivity to light, the photosensitizer, molecular oxygen in the triplet state, and light energy. There is much to be said about each of these three elements; however, the efficacy of the photosensitizer is the most determining factor for the success of this therapeutic modality. Porphyrins, chlorins, phthalocyanines, boron-dipyrromethenes, and cyanines are some of the -heterocycle-bearing dyes' classes with high biological promise.

Since the beginning of their production, in the 1930s, phthalates have been widely used in the plastics industry to provide durability and elasticity to polymers that would otherwise be rigid, or as solvents in hygiene and cosmetic products. Taking into account their wide range of applications, it is easy to understand why their use has been increasing over the years, making them ubiquitous in the environment. This way, all living organisms are easily exposed to these compounds, which have already been classified as endocrine disruptor compounds (EDC), affecting hormone homeostasis.

AT11-L0 is an aptamer derivative of AS1411 composed of G-rich sequences that can adopt a G-quadruplex (G4) structure and target nucleolin (NCL), a protein that acts as a co-receptor for several growth factors. Hence, this study aimed to characterize the AT11-L0 G4 structure and its interaction with several ligands for NCL targeting and to evaluate their capacity to inhibit angiogenesis using an in vitro model. The AT11-L0 aptamer was then used to functionalize drug-associated liposomes to increase the bioavailability of the aptamer-based drug in the formulation.

Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer, with increasing incidence and mortality rates. To overcome current treatment limitations, a hybrid molecule (HM) combining a triazene and a sulfur L-tyrosine analogue, was recently synthesized, incorporated in long blood circulating liposomes (LIP HM) and validated in an immunocompetent melanoma model. The present work constitutes a step forward in the therapeutic assessment of HM formulations.

The structural determinants of the interaction of the G-quadruplex (G4) motif found in precursor miRNA 149 (rG4) with the acridine orange derivative C , a G4 ligand stabilizer possessing anticancer activity, and the protein nucleolin (overexpressed in cancer cells) were investigated by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. For the rG4/C complex, the results revealed a strong stabilizing interaction between the aromatic core and the iodinated ring of the C ligand with the rG4 structure. The NMR study revealed also different interaction patterns between nucleolin and rG4 and nucleolin and rG4/C complex.

The spatial distribution of these fungi in the female genital tract remains poorly understood. In this study, swab samples were collected from 33 patients, first from the anterior vulva and then from the upper third and right lateral wall of the vagina: 16 were with symptoms of vulvovaginal candidiasis and 17 were without characteristic symptoms; furthermore, the genus and species of each isolate were identified.

Considering the clinical relevance of MPs and their application as therapeutic targets, it is crucial to explore highly effective production platforms and purification approaches to ultimately obtain a high-resolution structure of the target. Cervical cancer has been extensively associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) due to the expression of oncoproteins such as E6. This protein can interfere with p53 tumor suppressor activity, blocking apoptosis of abnormal cells. The functional inhibition of E6 protein is a promising therapeutic strategy for HPV-induced cancers.

Drug efficacy is dependent on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of therapeutic agents. Tight junctions, detoxification enzymes, and drug transporters, due to their localization on epithelial barriers, modulate the absorption, distribution, and the elimination of a drug. The epithelial barriers which control the pharmacokinetic processes are sex steroid hormone targets, and in this way, sex hormones may also control the drug transport across these barriers.

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in people aged 50 years or older in middle-income and industrialized countries. Anti-VEGF therapies have improved the management of neovascular AMD (nAMD) and proliferative DR (PDR), no treatment options exist for the highly prevalent dry form of AMD.
Methods: To unravel the biological processes underlying these pathologies and to find new potential biomarkers, a label-free quantitative (LFQ) method was applied to analyze the vitreous proteome in PDR (n=4), AMD (n=4) compared to idiopathic epiretinal membranes (ERM) (n=4).
Arjunolic acid (AA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid with promising anticancer properties. A series of novel AA derivatives containing a pentameric A-ring with an enal moiety, combined with additional modifications at C-28, were designed and prepared. The biological activity on the viability of human cancer and non-tumor cell lines was evaluated in order to identify the most promising derivatives.

This work demonstrates the potential of calcium- and nickel-crosslinked Gellan Gum (GG) microspheres to capture the Six-Transmembrane Epithelial Antigen of the Prostate 1 (STEAP1) directly from complex mini-bioreactor lysates in a batch method. Calcium-crosslinked microspheres were applied in an ionic exchange strategy, by manipulation of pH and ionic strength, whereas nickel-crosslinked microspheres were applied in an affinity strategy, mirroring a standard immobilized metal affinity chromatography. Both formulations presented small diameters, with appreciable crosslinker content, but calcium-crosslinked microspheres were far smoother.
