is an invasive brown macroalga that has recently proliferated in the western Mediterranean Sea, causing significant environmental challenges. This alga, however, contains valuable bioactive compounds-alginate, mannitol, and phlorotannins-that can serve as biofertilizers to promote plant growth and aid in bioremediation of degraded or contaminated soils. The ice plant ( L.) is a halophyte that could become an alternative crop because of its interest as a functional food and its adaptation to high-saline soils. The crosstalk of phytohormones in the regulation of growth and development and the response of plants to environmental stresses is a cutting-edge research topic, especially in crop species. In this paper, we study the role and crosstalk between abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene (ET), and jasmonate (JA) in the control of germination and seedling growth in water or in standard nutrient solution and under salt stress (supplemented with 100-200 mM NaCl). The roles of ET and JA were studied using squash ET- and JA-deficient mutants and , respectively, while the crosstalk between ET, JA, and ABA was determined by comparing the expression of the key ABA, JA, and ET genes in wild-type (WT) and mutant genotypes under standard conditions and salt stress.

A mutant with multiple defects in growth and development has been identified and characterized. The mutant displayed a dwarf phenotype with dark green and shrinking leaves, shortened internodes and petioles, shorter but thicker roots and greater root biomass, and reduced fertility. The causal mutation of the phenotype was found to disrupt gene , the squash orthologue of the brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthesis gene , encoding for 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase.

Using a recursion model with real parameters of Nabis pseudoferus, we show that its filial cannibalism is an optimal foraging strategy for life reproductive success, but it is not an evolutionarily optimal foraging strategy, since it cannot maximize the descendant's number at the end of the reproductive season. Cannibalism is evolutionarily rational, when the number of newborn offspring produced from the cannibalized offspring can compensate the following two effects: (a) The cannibalistic lineage wastes time, since the individuals hatched from eggs produced by cannibalism start to reproduce later. (b) Cannibalism eliminates not only one offspring, but also all potential descendants from the cannibalized offspring during the rest of reproductive season.

Wild shoots are consumed worldwide, although most species remain understudied. In this work, a total of four wild species were collected from different locations and analyzed compared with farmed . Syntenin-1 is a multidomain protein containing a central tandem of two PDZ domains flanked by two unnamed domains. Previous structural and biophysical studies show that the two PDZ domains are functional both isolated and in tandem, occurring a gain in their respective binding affinities when joined through its natural short linker. To get insight into the molecular and energetic reasons of such a gain, here, the first thermodynamic characterization of the conformational equilibrium of Syntenin-1 is presented, with special focus on its PDZ domains.

This paper demonstrates a sequential partitioning method for isolating bioactive compounds from Chrysochromulina rotalis using a polarity gradient, replacing classic and hazardous solvents with greener alternatives. Seventeen solvents were evaluated based on their Hansen solubility parameters and for having a similar polarity to the solvents they would replace, four of which were selected as substitutes in the classic fractionation process. Considering the fatty acid and carotenoid recovery yields obtained for each of the solvents, it has been proposed to replace hexane (HEX), toluene (TOL), dichloromethane (DCM) and n-butanol (BUT) with cyclohexane, chlorobenzene, isobutyl acetate and isoamyl alcohol, respectively.

The fillets and roes of 29 species of dry-salted fishes consumed in Eurasian countries were analyzed for fatty acids (FAs), tocols, and squalene, looking for derived health benefits. FAs were analyzed by GC-FID, and tocols and squalene were analyzed by HPLC-DAD. With some exceptions, docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6-3), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5-3), and arachidonic (ARA, 20:4-6) acids were the prominent polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
