Dynamic X-ray Microtomography vs. Laser-Doppler Vibrometry: A Comparative Study.

Purpose: There are challenges in understanding the biomechanics of the human middle ear, and established methods for studying this system show significant limitations. In this study, we evaluate a novel dynamic imaging technique based on synchrotron X-ray microtomography designed to assess the biomechanical properties of the human middle ear by comparing it to laser-Doppler vibrometry (LDV).

Methods: We examined three fresh-frozen temporal bones (TB), two donated by white males and one by a Black female, using dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray microtomography for 256 and 512 Hz, stimulated at 110 dB and 120 dB sound pressure level (SPL).

The auditory ossicles amplify and transmit sound from the environment to the inner ear. The distribution of bone mineral density is crucial for the proper functioning of sound transmission as the ossicles are suspended in an air-filled chamber. However, little is known about the distribution of bone mineral density along the human ossicular chain and within individual ossicles.

Ultrasound-based Measurement of the Intra-scaphoid angle.

Introduction: Ultrasound is gaining popularity for diagnosing scaphoid fractures. However, it hasn't been used to assess fracture displacement, such as humpback deformity. We propose a sonographic method to measure the intra-scaphoid angle, potentially serving as an alternative to CT scans for detecting fragment malposition after a scaphoid fracture.

ROS1 fusions in resected stage I-III adenocarcinoma: Results from the European Thoracic Oncology Platform Lungscape project.

Background: ROS1 fusion is a relatively low prevalence (0.6-2.0%) but targetable driver in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).

Standard versus fractionated high-dose cisplatin plus radiation for locally advanced head and neck cancer: Results of the CisFRad (GORTEC 2015-02) randomized phase II trial.

Background: Chemoradiotherapy with high-dose cisplatin (HD-Cis: 100 mg/m q3w for three cycles) is the standard of care (SOC) in locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HNSCC). Cumulative delivered dose of cisplatin is prognostic of survival, even beyond 200 mg/m but high toxicity compromises its delivery.

Aim: Cisplatin fractionation may allow, by decreasing the peak serum concentration, to decrease toxicity.

A multidimensional model of memory complaints in older individuals and the associated hub regions.

Memory complaints are highly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults, and they are frequently reported in individuals experiencing subjective cognitive decline (SCD). SCD has received increasing attention due to its implications for the early detection of dementia. This study aims to advance our comprehension of individuals with SCD by elucidating potential cognitive/psychologic-contributing factors and characterizing cerebral hubs within the brain network.

Strategies to decrease inequalities in cancer therapeutics, care and prevention: Proceedings on a conference organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, Vatican City, February 23-24, 2023.

Analyses of inequalities related to prevention and cancer therapeutics/care show disparities between countries with different economic standing, and within countries with high Gross Domestic Product. The development of basic technological and biological research provides clinical and prevention opportunities that make their implementation into healthcare systems more complex, mainly due to the growth of Personalized/Precision Cancer Medicine (PCM). Initiatives like the USA-Cancer Moonshot and the EU-Mission on Cancer and Europe's Beating Cancer Plan are initiated to boost cancer prevention and therapeutics/care innovation and to mitigate present inequalities.

Pierre-Marie Bamberger Syndrome Leading to the Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of a Localized Lung Cancer.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA), manifested with digital clubbing, tubular bone periostosis, and large joint synovial effusions, exists in two forms: primary, which is the rarest form, and secondary. The latter is frequently associated with lung diseases and, in some cases, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and is thus expressed in the form of a paraneoplastic syndrome. We report the case of a male smoker who was presented with secondary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and was subsequently diagnosed with primary adenocarcinoma of the lung.

Coverage of Palmar Mini Plates with Flexor Pulleys in the Treatment of Dorsal Fracture-Subluxation of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint.

Dorsal fracture dislocations (DFD) of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) are challenging fractures. A palmar surgical approach and plate fixation has a high complication rate, including flexor contractions, reduction of range of motion (ROM) and secondary need for plate removal. We use the flexor tendon pulleys to cover the mini plate with the assumption that it may reduce the adhesion between the mini plates and the tendons and reduce postoperative complications.

To decipher brain network dynamic remodeling from electroencephalography (EEG) during a complex postural control (PC) task combining virtual reality and a moving platform.EEG (64 electrodes) data from 158 healthy subjects were acquired. The experiment is divided into several phases, and visual and motor stimulation is applied progressively.

Is Urology a gender-biased career choice? A survey-based study of the Italian medical students' perception of specialties.

Background: Despite the well-established worldwide phenomenon of "the feminisation of medicine," in Italy, Urology remains a male-dominated field.

Objective: The aims of our work are to assess data on medical students' choice of surgical specialty in Italy to investigate if a gender-biased trend exists and to find the key points that influence the decision-making process when choosing a specialty, with a focus on Urology.

Design: Data about access to residency programs in 2017-2020 were analysed through descriptive statistics.

Spatio-temporal dynamics of large-scale electrophysiological networks during cognitive action control in healthy controls and Parkinson's disease patients.

Among the cognitive symptoms that are associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), alterations in cognitive action control (CAC) are commonly reported in patients. CAC enables the suppression of an automatic action, in favor of a goal-directed one. The implementation of CAC is time-resolved and arguably associated with dynamic changes in functional brain networks.

[Follow-up after urolithiasis management].

Background: Urinary stones often affect younger people. Because the risk of recurrence is high, regular follow-up is important for individuals at risk.

Objective: To summarize the extent of urinary stones and the health and economic impact in the population; to provide recommendations for general and stone-specific follow-up.

The anatomy of the anconeus nerve redefined.

The anconeus nerve is the longest branch of the radial nerve and suitable as a donor for the neurotization of the axillary nerve. The aim of this study was to map its topographical course with reference to palpable, anatomical landmarks. The anconeus nerve was followed in 15 cadaveric specimens from its origin to its entry to the anconeus.

Sustained Safety and Performance of a Second-Generation Sirolimus-Eluting Absorbable Metal Scaffold: Long-Term Data of the BIOSOLVE-II First-in-Man Trial at 5 Years.

Background: Permanent drug-eluting stents are associated with a steady increase in late complications attributed to persistent inflammation and poor vessel remodelling. Bioresorbable scaffolds have been developed to overcome such long-term limitations by providing temporary vessel support and disappearing thereafter. We aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of an absorbable metallic scaffold at 5 years.

Objectives: Doping-related knowledge, beliefs and attitude influence adolescent athletes' susceptibility to prohibited performance-enhancing substances. They might be modified by different cultural backgrounds. This study's aim was to analyse the geographical heterogeneity of doping-related knowledge, beliefs and attitude among adolescent elite athletes.

Biomimicry consists in imitating nature to solve complex human problems. The hand surgeon usually tries to copy and recreate the structure-to-function and function-to-control relationships of the native tissues after damage. With its exceptional structure and biomechanics, the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) has been an important source of inspiration for artificial hand system reconstruction.
