Institute of Biomedical Engineering, University of Montréal, Montréal, Canada; Research Center, CHU Sainte-Justine University Hospital Centre, Montréal, Canada; Department of Radiology, Radio-oncology and Nuclear Medicine, University of Montréal, Montréal, Canada. Electronic address:

The morphology and thickness of the retinal layers are valuable biomarkers for retinal health and development. The retinal layers in mice are similar to those in humans; thus, a mouse is appropriate for studying the retina. The objectives of this systematic review were: (1) to describe normal retinal morphology quantitatively using retinal layer thickness measured from birth to age 6 months in healthy mice; and (2) to describe morphological changes in physiological retinal development over time using the longitudinal (in vivo) and cross-sectional (ex vivo) data from the included studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Biologics and small-molecule therapies have improved the treatment landscape for atopic dermatitis, but older systemic treatments are still in use.
  • The PEDIatric STudy in Atopic Dermatitis is a 10-year observational study tracking the effectiveness and safety of dupilumab, cyclosporine, and methotrexate in children under 12 with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, with interim results available after 2 years.
  • Results show that dupilumab led to better improvements in skin severity, itching, and fewer discontinuations or adverse effects compared to methotrexate and cyclosporine.

Objective: This systematic review, performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, seeks to summarize the interventions that have been developed in order to improve executive functioning and attention in children born prematurely.

Methods: The PICOS framework helped guide the structure and relevant terms selected for the study. Electronic systematic searches of the databases PubMed (NLM), Ovid Medline, Ovid All EBM Reviews, Ovid Embase, and Ovid PsycINFO were completed in March 2022.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy in pediatric clinical research: Different pathophysiologies and promising clinical applications.

Neurophotonics

April 2023

University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine Leipzig/Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Department of Neurology, Clinic for Cognitive Neurology, Leipzig, Germany.

Over its 30 years of existence, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has matured into a highly versatile tool to study brain function in infants and young children. Its advantages, amongst others, include its ease of application and portability, the option to combine it with electrophysiology, and its relatively good tolerance to movement. As shown by the impressive body of fNIRS literature in the field of cognitive developmental neuroscience, the method's strengths become even more relevant for (very) young individuals who suffer from neurological, behavioral, and/or cognitive impairment.

Aims: COVID-19 has led to unprecedented public health measures such as school and university closures across the world. While initial surveys show an increase in anxiety, we have little information on the subjective experience of adolescents and young adults (AYAs). The aims of this study were to understand the lived experience and needs of AYAs related to home confinement and preventive measures due to COVID-19.

This document is intended to provide practical guidance to physicians treating pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD), especially dermatologists, pediatricians, allergists, and other health-care professionals. The recommendations contained here were formalized based on a consensus of 12 Canadian pediatric dermatologists, dermatologists, pediatricians, and pediatric allergists with extensive experience managing AD in the pediatric population. A modified Delphi process was adopted with iterative voting on a 5-point Likert scale, with a prespecified agreement cutoff of 75%.

Background: Digestive endoscopies must be performed within a safe and comfortable environment. We have previously shown that the quality of intravenous sedation is influenced by preoperative stress.

Aim: Our primary objective was to compare the effects of oral lorazepam and placebo on the salivary cortisol response of children undergoing a digestive endoscopy.

Emergency Point-of-Care Ultrasound Diagnosis of Diaphragmatic Hernia in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

Pediatr Emerg Care

October 2016

From the *Université de Montréal, CHU Sainte-Justine, Département pédiatrie, Secteur urgence, CHU Sainte-Justine University Hospital Centre, Montreal, Quebec; and †Division of Emergency Medicine, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

We present a case series of 2 patients who presented to a pediatric emergency department with history and symptoms suggestive of diaphragmatic hernia. Point-of-care ultrasound was used at the bedside to demonstrate the presence of bowel in the thorax and accurately guided the care of these children.

Pediatr Emerg Care

August 2015

From the *Division of Paediatric Emergency Medicine, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; †Department of Paediatric, Faculty of Medicine, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; ‡St Joseph's Health Center, University of Toronto; §Division of Emergency Medicine, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto; ║Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, McMaster Children's Hospital Faculty of Health Sciences, Hamilton, Ontario; ¶Secteur Urgence, Département Pédiatrie, CHU Sainte-Justine University Hospital Centre, Université de Montréal, Montreal, Quebec; #Department of Paediatrics, University of Toronto; and **Division of Emergency Medicine, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The use of point-of-care ultrasound in the pediatric emergency department is evolving beyond conventional applications as users become more expert with the technology. In this case series, we describe the potential utility of recognizing abnormal anatomy to impact care in the context of possible cancer in pediatric patients. We describe 4 patients with Langerhans histiocytosis, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, and rhabdomyosarcoma, in which point-of-care ultrasound was used to facilitate the diagnoses.
