Children and adolescents with complex musculoskeletal conditions may receive health care that requires at least 1 transfer between 4 specialized pediatric establishments in the Montreal region (Québec, Canada). This may result in challenges in navigating the system. A collaborative approach, aiming to make the inter-establishment care pathways seamless and to improve the integration of musculoskeletal health services, brought together key stakeholders including a research team.

Apelin stimulation of the vascular skeletal muscle stem cell niche enhances endogenous repair in dystrophic mice.

Impaired skeletal muscle stem cell (MuSC) function has long been suspected to contribute to the pathogenesis of muscular dystrophy (MD). Here, we showed that defects in the endothelial cell (EC) compartment of the vascular stem cell niche in mouse models of Duchenne MD, laminin α2-related MD, and collagen VI-related myopathy were associated with inefficient mobilization of MuSCs after tissue damage. Using chemoinformatic analysis, we identified the 13-amino acid form of the peptide hormone apelin (AP-13) as a candidate for systemic stimulation of skeletal muscle ECs.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for an important mortality rate worldwide. We aimed to evaluate the actual imputability of SARS-CoV-2 on the mortality rate associated with SARS-CoV-2-related illnesses in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Secondary objectives were to identify risk factors for death.

How to follow the guidelines, when the appropriate fluid is missing?

Intravenous maintenance fluid therapy (IV-MFT) is probably the most prescribed drug in paediatric hospital care. Recently paediatric societies have produced evidence-based practice guidelines that recommend the use of balanced isotonic fluid when prescribing IV-MFT in both acute and critical paediatric care. Unfortunately, the applicability of these guidelines could be called into question when a ready-to-use glucose-containing balanced isotonic fluid is not available.

Experiences participating in a telehealth exercise program among older adults with cancer: a qualitative study.

Purpose: Telehealth delivery of exercise programs has rapidly increased in recent years; yet, little is known regarding older cancer survivors' (OCS) experiences participating in telehealth exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine OCS barriers and facilitators to participation in telehealth-delivered exercise.

Methods: OCS who participated in a 12-week, one-on-one telehealth exercise program were recruited to participate in one of three focus groups.

This systematic review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of preterm birth on skeletal muscle mass and function across the lifespan.

Positive and negative experiences of caregivers helping power wheelchair users: a mixed-method study.

Purpose: This study aimed to better understand how the powered wheelchair (PWC) impacts the experiences of family caregivers of PWC users, and explore the strategies and resources used by caregivers to cope with their role.

Materials And Methods: This mixed-methods study was part of a larger cross-sectional research study conducted in four Canadian cities. Twenty-three family caregivers of PWC users, who provided at least 2 h of support per week, completed the Power Mobility Caregiver Assistive Technology Outcome (PM-CATOM), an 18-item measure assessing PWC-related and overall burden experienced by family caregivers.

CircRNAome of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Deciphering Subtype-Specific Expression Profiles and Involvement in ALL.

Childhood B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is a heterogeneous disease comprising multiple molecular subgroups with subtype-specific expression profiles. Recently, a new type of ncRNA, termed circular RNA (circRNA), has emerged as a promising biomarker in cancer, but little is known about their role in childhood B-ALL. Here, through RNA-seq analysis in 105 childhood B-ALL patients comprising six genetic subtypes and seven B-cell controls from two independent cohorts we demonstrated that circRNAs properly stratified B-ALL subtypes.

Introduction: The use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy, particularly protease-inhibitor-based regimens (PI), has been linked to adverse outcomes including preterm delivery. As this outcome may be related to systemic inflammation, we sought to characterize inflammatory profiles of pregnant people living with HIV (PLWH) by comparing their levels of inflammatory mediators at two timepoints during pregnancy according to ART regimen, and to HIV-negative controls.

Methods: Second and third trimester samples from 144 pregnant PLWH treated with ART and 24 HIV-uninfected controls were retrieved from the CARMA-PREG cohort.

Purpose: Healthcare professionals (HCP) perform various needle procedures that can be distressing and painful for children and adults. Even though many strategies have been proven effective in reducing distress and pain, topical anesthetic use before needle procedures is uncommon. However, there are limited studies in the existing literature comparing specifically liposomal lidocaine and tetracaine hydrochloride topical creams.

User perceptions about resources based on the Wheelchair Skills Training Program for training indoor and community wheelchair skills in pediatrics: a descriptive qualitative study.

Purpose: The Wheelchair Skills Training Program (WSTP) is underutilized in pediatrics for training manual wheelchair skills because the voluminous manual lacks pediatric specificity and no materials adapted for pediatric manual wheelchair users (PMWUs) are available. A set of resources (storybook, posters, training workbook) based on the WSTP has previously been developed for training basic indoor wheelchair skills with five to 15-year-old PMWUs. Occupational therapists (OTs) and PMWUs expressed a need for additional resources addressing higher-level skills.

Risk factors and clinical impact of thrombosis during induction chemotherapy for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia: A report from CYP-C.

Thromboembolism (TE) is associated with reduced survival in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). It has been hypothesized that TE might signal leukemic aggressiveness. The objective was to determine risk factors for TE during ALL induction (TE ) therapy and whether TE is associated with treatment refractoriness.

Characterisation of FLT3 alterations in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Background: Alterations of FLT3 are among the most common driver events in acute leukaemia with important clinical implications, since it allows patient classification into prognostic groups and the possibility of personalising therapy thanks to the availability of FLT3 inhibitors. Most of the knowledge on FLT3 implications comes from the study of acute myeloid leukaemia and so far, few studies have been performed in other leukaemias.

Methods: A comprehensive genomic (DNA-seq in 267 patients) and transcriptomic (RNA-seq in 160 patients) analysis of FLT3 in 342 childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) patients was performed.

Scaling up robust immunopeptidomics technologies for a global T cell surveillance digital network.

The human immunopeptidome plays a central role in disease susceptibility and resistance. In our opinion, the development of immunopeptidomics and other peptide sequencing technologies should be prioritized during the next decade, particularly within the framework of the Human Immunopeptidome Project initiative. In this context, we present bold ideas, fresh arguments, and call upon industrial partners and funding organizations to support and champion this important initiative that we believe has the potential to save countless lives in the future.

Noninvasive Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist in Infants With Bronchiolitis: Respiratory Outcomes in a Single-Center, Retrospective Cohort, 2016-2018.

Objectives: To describe our experience of using noninvasive neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NIV-NAVA) in infants with bronchiolitis, its association with the evolution of respiratory effort, and PICU outcomes.

Design: Retrospective analysis of a prospectively curated, high-frequency electronic database.

Setting: A PICU in a university-affiliated maternal-child health center in Canada.
