University Hospital of Liege, Department of Clinical Microbiology - Belgian National reference laboratory for Echinococcosis, Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Medicines (CIRM), Liege, Belgium; EchinoLiege, University Hospital of Liege (CHU-ULg), Liege, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers used EmsB microsatellite polymorphism to analyze 18 samples from Belgian AE patients, identifying three distinct genetic profiles among these specimens.
  • * Findings suggest Belgian E. multilocularis specimens show genetic diversity and share profiles with red foxes in neighboring regions, but no clear link was found between genetic profiles and geographical location, indicating the need for further research.

Research Question: What is the discontinuation rate among patients with remaining cryopreserved embryos in Belgium and what are the reasons for discontinuation?

Design: Multicentre, cross-sectional study across 11 Belgian fertility clinics. Patients were eligible (n = 1917) if they had previously undergone an unsuccessful fresh embryo transfer (fresh group) or frozen embryo transfer (FET) (in-between group) and did not start a subsequent FET cycle within 1 year despite having remaining cryopreserved embryos. The denominator was all patients with embryos cryopreserved during the same period (2012-2017) (n = 21,329).

Aims: To describe the baseline characteristics of participants in the Acetazolamide in Decompensated Heart Failure with Volume Overload (ADVOR) trial and compare these with other contemporary diuretic trials in acute heart failure (AHF).

Methods And Results: ADVOR recruited 519 patients with AHF, clinically evident volume overload, elevated N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and maintenance loop diuretic therapy prior to admission. All participants received standardized loop diuretics and were randomized towards once daily intravenous acetazolamide (500 mg) versus placebo, stratified according to study centre and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (≤40% vs.

Objective: To examine the association between maternal erythrocyte long-chain omega-3 PUFA (n-3 LCPUFA), measured in early pregnancy, and pregnancy and birth outcomes.

Study Design: One hundred and eight healthy women with a singleton pregnancy were included. Erythrocyte fatty acids were analyzed using gas chromatography.

Migraine is characterized by an increased sensitivity to visual stimuli that worsens during attacks. Recent evidence has shown that feedforward volleys carrying incoming visual information induce high-frequency (gamma) oscillations in the visual cortex, while feedback volleys arriving from higher order brain areas induce oscillatory activity at lower frequencies (theta/alpha/low beta). We investigated visually induced high (feedforward) and low (feedback) frequency activations in healthy subjects and various migraine patients.

While studies revealed that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and their mediators would be able to regulate several biological processes involved into the development of postpartum depression (PPD), evidence from observational studies remains mixed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between maternal erythrocyte n-3 PUFA, measured in early pregnancy, and the risk of PPD. A Belgian cohort of 72 healthy women was screened.

Objective: n-3 PUFA during pregnancy have been subject to intense research interest, but also much controversy, creating a situation of confusion among patients and health-care providers. The present study was carried out to explore knowledge, attitude and practices regarding n-3 PUFA in two independent populations of pregnant women and gynaecologists-obstetricians in Belgium and to assess the relationship between the pregnant women's attributes and their n-3 PUFA status measured by the omega-3 index.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Constitutional mismatch repair deficiency (CMMRD) is caused by germline pathogenic variants in both alleles of a mismatch repair gene. Patients have an exceptionally high risk of numerous pediatric malignancies and benefit from surveillance and adjusted treatment. The diversity of its manifestation, and ambiguous genotyping results, particularly from PMS2, can complicate diagnosis and preclude timely patient management.

Aims: Decisive evidence on the optimal diuretic agent, dosing schedule, and administration route is lacking in acute heart failure (AHF) with congestion. The Acetazolamide in Decompensated heart failure with Volume OveRload (ADVOR) trial is designed to test the hypothesis that the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide, a potent inhibitor of proximal tubular sodium reabsorption, improves decongestion when combined with loop diuretic therapy in AHF, potentially leading to better clinical outcomes.

Methods: The ADVOR trial is set up as a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, aiming to recruit 519 patients with AHF and clinically evident volume overload.

Using conventional visual evoked potentials (VEPs), migraine patients were found to be hyperresponsive to visual stimulus. Considering that a significant portion of neuronal activity is lost for analysis in the averaging process of conventional VEPs, in this study we investigated visual evoked responses of migraine patients and healthy volunteers using a different approach: single trial analysis. This method permits to preserve all stimulus-induced neuronal activations, whether they are synchronized or not.

Efficacy and mode of action of external trigeminal neurostimulation in migraine.

Expert Rev Neurother

b Research Unit of Neurophysiology of Vision and Neuro-Ophthalmology , G. B. Bietti Foundation IRCCS , Rome , Italy.

Available preventive drug treatments for migraine lack complete efficacy and often have unpleasant adverse effects. Hence, their clinical utility and therapeutic adherence are limited. Noninvasive neurostimulation methods applied over various peripheral sites (forehead, mastoid, upper arm, cervical vagus nerve) have raised great interest because of their excellent efficacy/tolerance profile.

Background: It is unanimously recognized that the maternal nutritional status at the pregnancy onset influence both short-term and long-term health of the mother and offspring. Among several nutrients, LCPUFA, particularly from the omega-3 family, are of utmost importance. This study was carried out to determine fatty acids profile of maternal erythrocyte membranes in early pregnancy and to identify potential determinants impacting on this status.

Pancreatic ectopia: a case report.

Acta Chir Belg

February 2014

Department of general surgery, CHR Citadelle Hospital, Lidge, Belgium.

Pancreas ectopia / Ectopic pancreas (EP) is a rare congenital disease, most typically diagnosed in asymptomatic patients by incidental detection during surgery or at autopsy. It is defined by the presence of pancreatic tissue localized in various places drifting from the foregut or mesentery. It is subject to the same various inflammatory or neoplastic disorders that may affect the orthotopic pancreas, e.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, intrarectal diazepam is the first-line anticonvulsant mostly used in children. We aimed to assess this standard care against sublingual lorazepam, a medication potentially as effective and safe, but easier to administer. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the pediatric emergency departments of 9 hospitals.

In a previous comparative study with migraineurs, we found in 24 normal subjects that the amplitude of the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (PR-VEP) in the first block of 100 responses and its habituation over 6 sequential blocks were significantly decreased after 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), while 10 Hz rTMS had no significant effect. We report here our results on the reproducibility of the rTMS effect studied in ten of these subjects by repeating the recordings for each frequency three times on different days. We have also reanalysed the data obtained in 24 normal subjects, looking separately at the results in those stimulated at an intensity equal to phosphene threshold (group 1; n=14) and those stimulated at 110% of motor threshold because of unelicitable phosphenes (group 2; n=10).
