Multicentre study on rates and reasons for treatment discontinuation in patients with remaining cryopreserved embryos.

Research Question: What is the discontinuation rate among patients with remaining cryopreserved embryos in Belgium and what are the reasons for discontinuation?

Design: Multicentre, cross-sectional study across 11 Belgian fertility clinics. Patients were eligible (n = 1917) if they had previously undergone an unsuccessful fresh embryo transfer (fresh group) or frozen embryo transfer (FET) (in-between group) and did not start a subsequent FET cycle within 1 year despite having remaining cryopreserved embryos. The denominator was all patients with embryos cryopreserved during the same period (2012-2017) (n = 21,329).

Acetazolamide in Decompensated Heart Failure with Volume Overload trial (ADVOR): baseline characteristics.

Migraine is characterized by an increased sensitivity to visual stimuli that worsens during attacks. Recent evidence has shown that feedforward volleys carrying incoming visual information induce high-frequency (gamma) oscillations in the visual cortex, while feedback volleys arriving from higher order brain areas induce oscillatory activity at lower frequencies (theta/alpha/low beta). We investigated visually induced high (feedforward) and low (feedback) frequency activations in healthy subjects and various migraine patients.

Imbalance between Omega-6 and Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Early Pregnancy Is Predictive of Postpartum Depression in a Belgian Cohort.

While studies revealed that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and their mediators would be able to regulate several biological processes involved into the development of postpartum depression (PPD), evidence from observational studies remains mixed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between maternal erythrocyte n-3 PUFA, measured in early pregnancy, and the risk of PPD. A Belgian cohort of 72 healthy women was screened.

Methods: The ADVOR trial is set up as a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, aiming to recruit 519 patients with AHF and clinically evident volume overload.

Brain Correlates of Single Trial Visual Evoked Potentials in Migraine: More Than Meets the Eye.

Using conventional visual evoked potentials (VEPs), migraine patients were found to be hyperresponsive to visual stimulus. Considering that a significant portion of neuronal activity is lost for analysis in the averaging process of conventional VEPs, in this study we investigated visual evoked responses of migraine patients and healthy volunteers using a different approach: single trial analysis. This method permits to preserve all stimulus-induced neuronal activations, whether they are synchronized or not.

Efficacy and mode of action of external trigeminal neurostimulation in migraine.

Available preventive drug treatments for migraine lack complete efficacy and often have unpleasant adverse effects. Hence, their clinical utility and therapeutic adherence are limited. Efficacy of sublingual lorazepam versus intrarectal diazepam for prolonged convulsions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, intrarectal diazepam is the first-line anticonvulsant mostly used in children. We aimed to assess this standard care against sublingual lorazepam, a medication potentially as effective and safe, but easier to administer. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the pediatric emergency departments of 9 hospitals.

Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on visual evoked potentials: new insights in healthy subjects.

In a previous comparative study with migraineurs, we found in 24 normal subjects that the amplitude of the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (PR-VEP) in the first block of 100 responses and its habituation over 6 sequential blocks were significantly decreased after 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), while 10 Hz rTMS had no significant effect. We report here our results on the reproducibility of the rTMS effect studied in ten of these subjects by repeating the recordings for each frequency three times on different days. We have also reanalysed the data obtained in 24 normal subjects, looking separately at the results in those stimulated at an intensity equal to phosphene threshold (group 1; n=14) and those stimulated at 110% of motor threshold because of unelicitable phosphenes (group 2; n=10).
