Introduction: Globally, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of cancer, and its treatment frequently includes the utilization of drugs based on antibodies and small molecules. The development of CRC has been linked to various signaling pathways, with the Wnt/β-catenin pathway identified as a key target for intervention.
Objectives: We have explored the impact of imidazopyridine-tethered chalcone-C (CHL-C) in CRC models.

Introduction: Food allergies represent a growing public health concern, particularly among children. This study aims to examine egg allergy in pediatric patients and analyze the value of serum-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) levels as predictive biomarkers for oral food challenge (OFC) outcomes.
Methods: Retrospective study, involving pediatric patients with suspected IgE-mediated egg allergy, conducted at a tertiary hospital.

Diatoms are one of the most abundant photosynthetic organisms on earth and contribute largely to atmospheric oxygen production. They contain fucoxanthin and chlorophyll-a/c binding proteins (FCPs) as light-harvesting complexes with a remarkable adaptation to the fluctuating light on ocean surfaces. To understand the basis of the photosynthetic process in diatoms, the excitation energy funneling within FCPs must be probed.

Immune recovery uveitis (IRU) is an intraocular inflammation that typically occurs as part of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in the eye. Typically, it affects human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with recognized or unrecognized cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis who are receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). IRU is a common cause of new vision loss in these patients, and it manifests with a wide range of symptoms and an increased risk of inflammatory complications, such as macular edema.

We discuss the case of an esophageal cancer patient treated by chemo and radiotherapy complicated by an esophageal stenosis and an iatrogenic broncho-esophageal fistula. This latter was managed with multiple palliative stenting procedures and colonic surgical bypass. Despite a long disease free survival but decreased quality of life and frailty, we came to the proposal of an extremely unusual form of treatment - physiological lung exclusion, with clinical benefit and so far without any drawbacks related to the procedure.

Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy may exhibit impaired functional capacity, associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Systolic function is one of the determinants of functional capacity. Early identification of systolic disfunction may identify patients at risk for adverse outcomes.

Marine and terrestrial photosynthesis exhibit a schism in the accessory chlorophyll (Chl) that complements the function of Chl : Chl for green plants versus Chl for most eukaryotic phytoplankton. The enzymes that mediate Chl biosynthesis have long remained elusive. In this work, we identified the CHLC dioxygenase (Phatr3_J43737) from the marine diatom as the Chl synthase.

Background: Cytomegalovirus is the most common cause of congenital infections worldwide. Screening all newborns in the first 2 weeks of life is the only way to detect all cases of congenital infection, allowing the monitoring of children with asymptomatic infection at birth and early intervention.
Aim: In this multicenter study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using a saliva pool strategy for mass screening in 7 Portuguese hospitals, and to estimate the current prevalence of this congenital infection in these hospitals.

Two novel assays have been developed, iTACT-hepatitis B core-related antigen (iTACT-HBcrAg) and iTACT-hepatitis B surface antigen (iTACT-HBsAg) assays. We investigated the longitudinal profiles of iTACT-HBcrAg- and -HBsAg in patients with HBsAg seroclearance (SC) (<0.05 IU/mL).

Background: Critically ill patients with cirrhosis and ascites are at high risk for intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) which increases mortality. Clinical guidelines recommend maintaining intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) below 16 mmHg; nonetheless, more than three quarters of critically ill patients with cirrhosis develop IAH during their first week of ICU stay. Standard-of-care intermittent large-volume paracentesis (LVP) relieves abdominal wall tension, reduces IAP, optimizes abdominal perfusion pressure, and is associated with short-term improvement in renal and pulmonary dysfunction.

Background: Candy cane syndrome (CCS) is a condition that occurs following gastrectomy or gastric bypass. CCS remains underrecognized, yet its prevalence is likely to rise due to the obesity epidemic and increased use of bariatric surgery. No previous literature review on this subject has been published.

Background: The aim of this study was to calculate the cost-effectiveness of the EmERGE Pathway of Care for medically stable people living with HIV in the Hospital Capuchos, Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central (HC-CHLC). The app enables individuals to receive HIV treatment information and communicate with caregivers.
Methods: This before-and-after study collected the use of services data 1 year before implementation and after implementation of EmERGE from November 1, 2016, to October 30, 2019.

Chirality is universal in nature and in biological systems, and the chirality of cholesteric liquid crystals (Ch-LC) is both controllable and quantifiable. Herein, a strategy for precise chirality recognition in a nematic LC host within soft microscale confined droplets is reported. This approach facilitates applications in distance and curvature sensing as well as on-site characterization of the overall uniformity and bending movements of a flexible device.

Organ and tissue donation can transform lives. One donor can ensure the survival of up to 8 people through their organs and improve the quality of life for dozens more through tissue donation. Portugal has an excellent transplantation rate, but deaths still occur while waiting for an organ.
