Article Synopsis
  • Orally transmitted acute Chagas disease (ACD) is a significant global health issue, especially affecting low-income populations in tropical areas, and presents management challenges even after over 100 years of recognition.
  • A reported outbreak in Pedro do Rosário, Brazil, involved 39 ACD cases linked to bacaba juice, highlighting the need for thorough clinical and epidemiological investigations; diagnostic success varied significantly based on the criteria used.
  • The study found considerable obstacles in ACD management, including outdated diagnostic methods, reliance on conventional treatments, and the vulnerability of affected populations, emphasizing the need for better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Background: Ageing is associated with structural changes in brain regions and functional decline in cognitive domains. Noninvasive tools for identifying structural damage in the brains of older adults are relevant for early treatment.

Aims: This study aims to evaluate and compare the accuracy of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA©) in identifying gray and white matter brain damage in older individuals with varying degrees of cognitive impairment.

This study evaluated the functional capacity measured by the Glittre-ADL test (TGlittre) in patients with nondialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (NDD-CKD) and analyzed the test's associations with muscle strength, physical activity level (PAL), and quality of life. Methods: Thirty patients with NDD-CKD underwent the following evaluations: the TGlittre; the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); the Short Form-36 (SF-36); and handgrip strength (HGS). The absolute value and percentage of the theoretical TGlittre time were 4.

The endocannabinoid (eCB) system regulates many physiological functions in the central nervous system. Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) is an essential enzyme in the eCB system, degrading anandamide. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs324420 is a common genetic polymorphism of the FAAH gene and has been associated with susceptibility to neurological conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • HIF-1α plays a crucial role in the formation of tuberculous granulomas, which is important for the development of latent TB infection and its potential progression to active TB.
  • In a study involving patients with active TB, individuals with LTBI, and healthy controls, it was found that IL-15 levels were higher in LTBI patients compared to those with active TB, while IL-18 and TNF-α levels were similar across both groups.
  • The research indicates that under low oxygen conditions, the downregulation of the NF-κB pathway leads to increased TNF-α production in LTBI individuals, highlighting differences in immune responses between latent and active TB infections.

Effective connectivity within the corticothalamic circuit in the neuromyelitis optica patients: A comparative study using resting-state fMRI.

J Clin Neurosci

March 2022

Institute of Neuroscience, The Center of Excellence in Brain and Intelligence Technology, State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience, Key Laboratory of Primate Neurobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China.. Electronic address:

Neuromyelitis Optica, which is known as NMO, is a demyelination syndrome and inflammatory condition of the central nervous system that affects the optic nerves. Since structural imaging approaches cannot adequately describe the brain disorders in patients with NMO, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be used. Resting-state fMRI was performed on 25 healthy subjects and 26 NMO patients.

This paper presents a digital elevation model (DEM) of the dunes found in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, an environmental protection area located in the Maranhão state (Brazil). The DEM supports the modeling studies of sand-dune evolution using multi-temporal satellite images and ground truth data, obtained through the post-processed kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning. The study area is located at the border of three major neotropical ecosystems: the Amazonia, Caatinga, and Brazilian savanna.

Purpose: Gastrointestinal mucositis is a major problem associated with cancer therapy. To minimize these deleterious effects, simultaneous administration of antioxidant components, such as selenium, can be considered. There is a growing interest in the use of yeasts because they are able to convert inorganic selenium into selenomethionine.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effect of different endodontic sealers (epoxy resin, eugenol, and bioceramic/calcium silicate-based) and the time of cementation (immediately or 7 days after canal obturation) on the bond strength of a fiberglass post cemented with RelyX™ ARC.

Material And Methods: Eighty-four premolars were instrumented and divided into groups (n = 12) according to the sealer and the time of post cementation: Endofill (EN), Endosequence BC Sealer (BC), and AH Plus (AH) had immediately fiber post cementation; EN7, BC7, and AH7 had post cementation after 7 days; and control group (C) had fiber post cementation without endodontic sealer. Each post space of the root was cut into slices and submitted to push-out test.

Teeth with open apices, such as in immature teeth or those with apical root resorption are clinical cases with difficult immediate resolution. With the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in dentistry, it was possible to optimize the treatment time of these cases by immediate placement of apical plug and the root canal filling. However, some negative effects can occur if MTA is extruded beyond the apex.
