Defining measures of kidney function in observational studies using routine health care data: methodological and reporting considerations.

Kidney Int

January 2023

Department of Non-communicable Disease Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, UK; Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand; UK Renal Registry, UK Kidney Association, Bristol, UK. Electronic address:

The availability of electronic health records and access to a large number of routine measurements of serum creatinine and urinary albumin enhance the possibilities for epidemiologic research in kidney disease. However, the frequency of health care use and laboratory testing is determined by health status and indication, imposing certain challenges when identifying patients with kidney injury or disease, when using markers of kidney function as covariates, or when evaluating kidney outcomes. Depending on the specific research question, this may influence the interpretation, generalizability, and/or validity of study results.

Immune disruptions and night shift work in hospital healthcare professionals: The intricate effects of social jet-lag and sleep debt.

Front Immunol

September 2022

Inserm, CESP (Center for research in Epidemiology and Population Health), Team Exposome and Heredity, University Paris-Saclay, Gustave-Roussy, Villejuif, France.

Objectives: We aimed to examine the effects of circadian and sleep rhythm disruptions on immune biomarkers among hospital healthcare professionals working night shifts and rotating day shifts.

Methods: Hospital nurses working either as permanent night shifters (n=95) or as day shifters rotating between morning and afternoon shifts (n=96) kept a daily diary on their sleep and work schedules over a full working week. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and end of the last shift during the week, and participants were categorized into three groups based on work shift: morning shift (39 day shifters sampled at 7:00 and 14:00), afternoon shift (57 day shifters sampled at 14:00 and 21:00), and night shift (95 night shifters sampled at 21:00 and 7:00).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the link between sleep disturbances and prostate cancer risk, finding that overall sleep duration and deprivation weren't major factors, regardless of cancer aggressiveness.
  • - However, sleep deprivation increased prostate cancer risk for men with an evening chronotype, and long-term use of sleep medications was also associated with higher risk, especially in those who worked nights or didn't use NSAIDs.
  • - The findings suggest that factors like chronotype and specific work schedules may influence the relationship between sleep issues and prostate cancer, indicating the need for further research to identify high-risk subgroups for potential preventive measures.

An increasing number of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics is made available to the scientific community. Exploiting these results from multiple phenotypes would permit identification of novel pleiotropic associations. In addition, incorporating prior biological information in GWAS such as group structure information (gene or pathway) has shown some success in classical GWAS approaches.

Institutionalization is an exceptional and temporary measure that occurs when there is a violation of rights; lasting until the family reintegration or, in the impossibility of this, the placement in a substitute family through adoption. Among the main reasons for institutionalization in Brazil are the financial difficulties, abandonment, domestic violence, drug addiction, homelessness of the responsible for the child, sexual abuse, and the loss of parents by death or imprisonment. Although children and adolescents have their rights assured when they are institutionalized, the care provided in these spaces does not include all their needs and demands, which may damage their affective-relational development.
