The architecture of hydrophobically modified polymers can be tailored to produce variants with different levels of functionality. This allows industry to apply rational design methods for the development of more environmentally friendly materials. In the present work, the ecotoxicity of six variants of hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic) acids (HMPAA), obtained by changing the crosslinked conformation, insertion position, and length of the hydrophobic groups, was assessed for the (i) bioluminescence production of Aliivibrio fischeri; (ii) population growth rate of Raphidocelis subcapitata and Chlorella vulgaris; (iii) mortality of Brachionus calyciflorus; (iv) feeding inhibition, somatic growth rate, reproduction, and mortality of Daphnia magna; and (iv) mortality and somatic growth rate of Pelophylax perezi tadpoles.

Concentrated in the skins of red grapes are the anthocyanins, the primary colorants responsible for the fruits' reddish-purple color. The work describes the combination of granulated biomass fly ash (G) with Fenton process to enhance the removal of adsorbable organic halides (AOX) from pulp bleaching wastewater. At optimal operating conditions, wastewater's chemical and biochemical oxygen demand (COD and BOD, respectively) and colour were also quantified, and operating cost of treatment assessed. For the first time, raw pulp bleaching wastewater was used to granulate BFA, instead of water, reducing the water footprint of the treatment.

Recent studies have shown that the addition of non-viable microbial biomass or their components (postbiotics) to fish feed can modulate the gut microbiome and positively influence fish health in aquaculture systems. Modulation of lipid metabolism is a well-established cancer hallmark, and SCD1 has been recognized as a key enzyme in promoting cancer cell growth, including in glioblastoma (GBM), the deadliest brain tumor and a paradigm of cancer resistance. The central goal of this work was to identify, by MS, the phospholipidome alterations resulting from the silencing of SCD1 in human GBM cells, in order to implement an innovative therapy to fight GBM cell resistance. Haloarchaea microorganisms are little explored marine resources that can be a promising source of valuable compounds with unique characteristics, due to their adaptation to extreme environments. In this work, the extraction of bacterioruberin and proteins from ATCC 33500 was investigated using aqueous solutions of ionic liquids and surfactants, which were further compared with ethanol. Despite the good performance of ethanol in the extraction of bacterioruberin, the use of aqueous solutions of surface-active compounds allowed the simultaneous release of bacterioruberin and proteins in a multi-product process, with the non-ionic surfactants being identified as the most promising.
