The high toxicity and occurrence of ochratoxin A (OTA) in grains and foods has been a growing concern due to the impacts on health and the economy in many countries. In this sense, simplified devices with high sensitivity and specificity for local monitoring are enthusiastically pursued. In this work, we report for the first time the detection of ochratoxin A in coffee samples using a spoon-shaped waveguide immunosensor.

Pesticide application increased by about 1 million tonnes in the last 3 decades. Pesticides' overuse, coupled with the need for several pesticides to control different pests in the same crop, and its application many times per year, results in dangerous chemical cocktails that enter in aquatic systems, with impacts to the ecosystems and its communities. Climatic changes are currently another great concern, is predicted by the end of the 21st century, the earth's surface temperature will increase by about 4 °C.

Chitin/chitosan and collagen are two of the most important bioactive compounds, with applications in the pharmaceutical, veterinary, nutraceutical, cosmetic, biomaterials, and other industries. Considerable attention has been devoted to investigating the biological activity of microalgal extracts, highlighting their capacity to modulate cellular metabolism. This study aimed to assess the impact of Nannochloropsis oceanica lipid extract on the phospholipid profile of human keratinocytes subjected to UVB radiation. The outcomes revealed that treatment of keratinocytes with the lipid extract from microalgae led to a reduction in sphingomyelin (SM) levels, with a more pronounced effect observed in UVB-irradiated cells.

Exposure to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) has been associated with heightened risks of lung cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. PM exposure also affects the immune system, leading to an increased susceptibility to infections, exacerbating pre-existent inflammatory and allergic lung diseases. Seagrass meadows provide several ecological functions that improve the overall ecological health of coastal systems and therefore, it is urgent to promote the restoration of such habitats. In Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon in the Atlantic Coast of Portugal, a restoration initiative was responsible for transplanting the dwarf eelgrass Zostera noltei into a highly degraded area. This eelgrass was used as a nature-based solution (NbS) to mitigate some of the impacts of historical mercury contamination.

Microphytobenthos (MPB) inhabiting intertidal flats are exposed to large and sudden changes in temperature, often simultaneously with exposure to direct sunlight. These conditions are expected to negatively impact photosynthesis by exacerbating the photoinhibition under high light. This study addressed the photoinhibitory effects of short-term exposure to cold (5°C) and moderate heat (35°C) on MPB dominated by motile epipelic (EPL) and immotile epipsammic (EPM) diatom species, by evaluating the seasonal variation of photoinactivation and repair of photosystem II (PSII).

SETD7 (SET7/9, KMT7) is a lysine methyltransferase that targets master regulators of cell proliferation and differentiation. Here, the impact of inhibiting SETD7 catalytic activity on mammary epithelial cell differentiation was studied by focusing on genes associated with epithelial differentiation, lactogenesis, and lipid metabolism in HC11 and EpH4 cell lines. Setd7 mRNA and protein levels were induced upon lactogenic differentiation in both cell lines.
