As demanding as dancing en pointe is, no universal standard exists to determine when a ballet dancer is ready to advance to this next level. The goal of this study was to provide preliminarily tested and reliable guidelines for a screening tool that can be used to determine (1) if a dancer is ready for pointe, (2) reasons why a dancer may not be ready, and (3) areas for improvement to guide training and preparation. Seventeen dancers aged 9 to 17 years with a minimum 4 years of ballet and who were either possibly ready for pointe or had been in pointe class less than 3 months participated in this study.

Objective: To evaluate whether supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) may be a viable alternative to radiation therapy (RT) for patients with glottic cT3N0M0 squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) who are surgical candidates for total laryngectomy (TL) and respond well to platinum-based induction chemotherapy.

Methods: Retrospective case series review of 18 consecutive patients with cT3N0M0 glottic SCC, initially considered surgical candidates only for TL who showed a good response to platinum-based induction chemotherapy, managed at a French university teaching institution with either SCPL (n = 9) or RT (n = 9). The main endpoints were 10-year local control and laryngeal preservation.

To obtain broad regulatory approval for a new analgesic agent in acute postoperative pain, US and European regulatory authorities require pivotal studies in both hard (bony) tissue pain and soft tissue pain. Bunionectomy is by far the most common hard tissue pivotal trial model, in spite of the fact that the model has limited relevance to clinicians prescribing pain drugs (pain from bunionectomy is not extreme or long-lasting, and is adequately treated by existing drugs). The authors outline the experimental characteristics that make bunionectomy an appealing study model for researchers despite its lack of clinical relevance compared to larger surgeries.

Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) is the primary conduit for regulated passage of ions and metabolites into and out of a mitochondrion. Calculating the solvation free energy for VDAC is crucial for understanding its stability, function, and interactions within the cellular environment. In this article, numerical schemes for computing the total solvation free energy for VDAC-comprising electrostatic, ideal gas, and excess free energies plus the nonpolar energy-are developed based on a nonuniform size modified Poisson-Boltzmann ion channel (nuSMPBIC) finite element solver along with tetrahedral meshes for VDAC proteins.

However, RNAs are flexible, and it remains difficult to describe their macromolecular conformations in solutions where varying conditions can induce conformational changes. Coarse roots represent a globally important belowground carbon pool, but the factors controlling coarse root decomposition rates remain poorly understood relative to other plant biomass components. We compiled the most comprehensive dataset of coarse root decomposition data including 148 observations from 60 woody species, and linked coarse root decomposition rates to plant traits, phylogeny and climate to address questions of the dominant controls on coarse root decomposition. We found that decomposition rates increased with mean annual temperature, root nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

The effects of single chromosome number change-dysploidy - mediating diversification remain poorly understood. Dysploidy modifies recombination rates, linkage, or reproductive isolation, especially for one-fifth of all eukaryote lineages with holocentric chromosomes. Background: We have previously developed a candidate therapeutic HPV DNA vaccine (pBI-11) encoding mycobacteria heat shock protein 70 linked to HPV16/18 E6/E7 proteins for the control of advanced HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer (NCT05799144). While naked DNA vaccines are readily produced, stable, and well tolerated, their potency is limited by the delivery efficiency. Here we compared three different IM delivery strategies, including intramuscular (IM) injection, either with a needle alone or with electroporation at the injection site, and a needle-free injection system (NFIS), for their ability to elicit gene expression and to improve the potency of pBI-11 DNA vaccine.

We report on the development of a multimodal spectroscopy system, combining diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS). A fiber optic probe was designed with spatially offset source-detector fibers to collect subsurface measurements for each modality, as well as ball lens-coupled fibers for superficial measurements. The system acquires DRS, zero-offset Raman spectroscopy (RS) and SORS with good signal-to-noise ratio.
