A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensor with minimal invasiveness and high spatial resolution has been developed as a nanoendoscope to detect changes in protein concentrations at specific sites in biological tissues. While generally applicable to various tissues or proteins, the SERS nanoendoscope is demonstrated for the quantitative detection of S100β, an astrocytic protein whose plasmatic levels are known to vary in several neuropathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, Down syndrome, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy, but for which intratissular levels have not been locally monitored, demonstrating key attributes of the SERS nanoendoscope. The SERS nanoendoscope is fabricated with densely and well-dispersed deposited gold nanoparticles modified with anti-S100β primary antibody on pulled optical fibers with a tip diameter of 700 nm, conducive to noninvasive and regiospecific detection of the S100β protein in different regions of mouse brain slices under different physiological stimuli with micrometer resolution.

Monitoring neurochemicals and imaging the molecular content of brain tissues , , and is essential for enhancing our understanding of neurochemistry and the causes of brain disorders. This review explores the potential applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanosensors in neurosciences, where their adoption could lead to significant progress in the field. These applications encompass detecting neurotransmitters or brain disorders biomarkers in biofluids with SERS nanosensors, and imaging normal and pathological brain tissues with SERS labeling.

Background: More and more people suffer from concomitant chronic physical diseases and common mental disorders, calling for integrated self-management support in primary care. However, self-management support of chronic physical diseases and common mental disorders is not clearly operationalized by guidelines and is still conducted in silos by primary care nurses, especially in favour of chronic diseases. This study aims to better understand primary care nurses' experience of integrated self-management support for people with physical chronic diseases and common mental disorders.

Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in health care are on the agenda of policymakers around the world, but a major challenge remains, namely, to set policies that will ensure wide acceptance and capture the value of AI while mitigating associated risks.
Objective: This study aims to provide an overview of how OECD countries strategize about how to integrate AI into health care and to determine their actual level of AI maturity.
Methods: A scan of government-based AI strategies and initiatives adopted in 10 proactive OECD countries was conducted.

Many workers can be exposed simultaneously to heat and volatile chemicals. In a controlled human exposure study, it was observed that an increase in ambient temperature was associated with increased blood concentrations for acetone and toluene. Based on the expected changes in physiological parameters that occur with an increase in ambient temperature, we aimed to develop a PBPK model for acetone and toluene that could account for the impact of temperature on the kinetics of these solvents.

Surface curvature can be used to focus light and alter optical processes. Here, we show that curved surfaces (spheres, cylinders, and cones) with a radius of around 5 μm lead to maximal optoplasmonic properties including surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), photocatalysis, and photothermal processes. Glass microspheres, microfibers, pulled fibers, and control flat substrates were functionalized with well-dispersed and dense arrays of 45 nm Au NP using polystyrene--poly-4-vinylpyridine (PS--P4VP) and chemically modified with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA, SERS reporter), 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT, reactive to plasmonic catalysis), or 4-fluorophenyl isocyanide (FPIC, photothermal reporter).

Detailed mechanistic investigations of the interrelated roles of multiple key structure-directing agents in the growth solution of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) is required for the optimization of synthetic protocols. Here, we report a robust seed-mediated growth strategy for synthesizing multibranched NPs (MB-AuNPs) with monodispersed size distribution, and investigate the roles of Ag ions and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-1-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) based on an overgrowth synthesis approach. The intertwining roles of Ag , surface-capping stabilizers, and reducing agents were elucidated, and used to control the morphology of MB-AuNPs.

In Nunavik (Northern Quebec, Canada), some mining projects are envisioned, that could increase the contamination of the environment by various chemicals, including rare earth elements (REEs), and implicitly Inuit population exposure. The objective of this study was to determine the baseline biological exposure of the population to these elements, before the potential mining development occurs. In the framework of the 2017 Qanuilirpitaa? Inuit health survey, urine samples were obtained from a representative sample of the adult Nunavik population, which were used to constitute 30 pooled samples according to age, sex and Nunavik subregions.

Purpose: Evidence supporting multimorbidity-adapted interventions is scarce, mostly due to a lack of adapted outcome measures. Measurement constructs for a novel patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) were defined in previous studies using a literature review, a qualitative description from stakeholders, and an item pool identification process. The aim of this study was to attain consensus on the content of this novel PROM.

Mercury(II) ions (Hg) and silver ions (Ag) are two of the most hazardous pollutants causing serious damage to human health. Here, we constructed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active nanofibers covered with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy)-modified gold nanoparticles to detect Hg and Ag. Experimental evidence suggests that the observed spectral changes originate from the combined effect of (i) the coordination between the nitrogen on 4-Mpy and the metal ions and (ii) the 4-Mpy molecular orientation (from flatter to more perpendicular with respect to the metal surface).

Individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) show altered postural reactions leading to increased risk of falls. To investigate neural correlates underlying this deficit, we assessed the modulation pattern of the Soleus H-reflex in iSCI individuals following unexpected perturbations of a base of support. Lakes are important sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere. Factors controlling CO, CH and NO fluxes include eutrophication and warming, but the integrated influence of climate-warming-driven stratification, oxygen loss and resultant changes in bloom characteristics on GHGs are not well understood. Here we assessed the influence of contrasting meteorological conditions on stratification and phytoplankton bloom composition in a eutrophic lake, and tested for associated changes in GHGs inventories in both the shallow and deep waters, over three seasons (2010-2012).

Background: Early identification of patients with chronic conditions and complex health needs in emergency departments (ED) would enable the provision of services better suited to their needs, such as case management. A case-finding tool would ultimately support ED teams to this end and could reduce the cost of services due to avoidable ED visits and hospitalizations. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a short self-administered case-finding tool in EDs to identify patients with chronic conditions and complex health needs in an adult population.

We describe surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) aptasensors that can indirectly detect MC-LR and MC-RR, individually or simultaneously, in natural water and in algal culture. The sensor is constructed from nanoparticles composed of successive layers of Au core-SERS label-silver shell-gold shell (Au@label@Ag@Au NPs), functionalized on the outer Au surface by MC-LR and/or MC-RR aptamers. These NPs are immobilized on asymmetric Au nanoflowers (AuNFs) dispersed on planar silicon substrates through DNA hybridization of the aptamers and capture DNA sequences with which the AuNFs are functionalized, thereby forming core-satellite nanostructures on the substrates.
